for christmas i got the Stewmac Violin Kit, and have already begun assembly.

this looks to be a very rewarding, enjoyable, and involved build. =)

here's the whole kit layed out:

the right corner is what it looked like upon arrival, and the left corner of the channel is what was left up to me, not much, i just had to make it a straight corner.

the back is beautiful

I had to improvise a bending iron for the binding

and here's the binding installed (poor quality pic so it's hard to tell)

that's all for now!!!!

sweet dude. I kinda want to get a violin. Or join orchestra at school and bring along the fingering talent of a guitarist.

hahaha, that's true, but this is something i've REALLY been wanting for a long time.

i've got a friend who wants to teach me how to play, and four who want to play this when it's done.

and i get to learn a new instrument

and i get to have a fun build too!!

anyway, progress has been made, all the binding is installed. up at the top of the backside there's a little semi-circle... that 2" space was left blank when it arrived to allow a little bit of creativity for anyone who wished to try it, so i put in that little semi-circle as an accent instead of doing a straght line across. and in either case i had to carve the channel out by hand with an exacto knife and micro-chisels.

Looks great! I like what you did with the purfling and the kit looks it of good quality.
I'll be watching this build, i'm hoping to build a volin after my acoustic.

I wish the top wood was as sexy as the bottom wood.

That bottom is just awesome. The top is just like eh ok.

yeah, i'm pretty sure it's sitka spruce like on most acoustics. and probably for the same reason, it has good resonance.

Doing anything cool with the stain, or just the traditional violin color

i'm still debating that....

I may just cheat and finish it with Tung Oil leaving the natural color.
