I'm finally getting a new amp. It's the Blackstar HT-5H. It's a five watt head, but can actually get metal distortion. There's clips all over YouTube so check it out if you want. Here's what I want to know:
With a four by twelve, would it be loud enough for a full band practice, cranked all the way up?

roflzoid. you know that the Blackstar amps had an issue in which if you play with a certain eq then it will just sound like fart? and also you do realise that a full band practice to you will sound completely different to just about every other single user (posting or non-posting) on this board?

Well I meant like a drummer and a bassist playing with me.

Not sure really, I don't use mine for rehearsals, just use my AOR, that's loud enough without having to crank it full, sounds a hell of a lot better too... Not that the Blackstar sounds bad, but looking back I would have preferred to get a Peavey bandit or something for my practicing. But then again I just practice on my acoustic now.
So this post was rather fail.

and your drummer and bassist play exactly how loud? your choice of questions only lead to more questions, which leaves me to the question do your questions ever have proper answers or is it just a big loop of fail.

Well, my other option is a custom amp from ontariomaximus. He says he can do a fifteen watt tube amp with an effects loop, a clean channel, and a dirty channel that can sound like current (United Abominations) Megadeth.

why... do you need a low wattage amp for high gain?

I just talked to him... he can do a thirty watt amp.
Well, I'm going to be practicing with the amp as well, so it can't be super high.

you don't necessarily need the amp to be completely cranked for modern high gain though. of course, it depends on how modern you mean, and also personal preference will play a part too... can he do a half-power switch? that might be worth considering (if it doesn't add too much to the cost), as it'd allow you to get a higher wattage for increased headroom, but would let you switch down to less headroom if you prefer that. powerscaling may be even better, as that'd let you switch it down to almost nothing (but he might not be able to do that, and may add a lot of expense even if he could). up to you, really.

Good advice. And he is putting in a very high gain preamp, so I think I'm ok. I suppose I just like cranking it when I have to I guess. I really would never need that much wattage anyway.

yeah, i know what you mean. the other thing is that a lot of the time high gain amps have pretty clean poweramps anyway, to let you crank them up without their getting flubby. and some players just prefer the tone and response of 100 watters, regardless of how much volume they actually need. the only other thing i'd say about half-power switches etc. is that often they sound better in full-power mode... not saying you shouldn't get it (especially if it's a cheap add-on!), just you might find you don't use it all that much.
