Honestly I thought he was just gonna stay in administrative leave for a while then they'd reinstate him. Kinda surprised.

One one hand I do see it's justified, but on the other hand despite his sleezy ways Petrino is actually a pretty good coach and Arky ain't gonna find someone as good as him.

If this was YOUR coach who got in a motorcycle wreck and lied about being with a 25 yr old asst, would you want him fired?

I'm kinda torn. On the one hand, his personal life and screwups away from the job shouldn't impact his employment. BUT, he does represent the university and is supposed to be a leader, so you don't want him to be a scumbag. I definitely didn't see a firing coming. Sucks for Arky, he had them playing some good ball.

He was in a relationship with a woman half his age who worked under him - I wouldn't call that "away from the job" ... well, except that it might have caused him to be away from his job for periods of time even when at the office. :D

Plus it sounds like he lied to the cops about it and lied to his boss about it. People who run sports programs will usually tolerate some indiscretions if the guy is winning games, but not many are going to put up with being misled and lied to. If he had admitted what was going on the first time and not only when he was backed into a corner, I bet he'd still be the HC at Arkansas.

Arky did what they had to do. Not only did Petrino have a a now very public extra-marrital affair. He failed to disclose the relationship to his boss when he hired this woman into the athletic department. That's a HUGE ethical violation. He also lied about who was on the cycle with him. When are these coaches going to learn that covering shit up only gets you into deeper shit?

Sucks for Arky too because I'm not sure who they can hire. If Butch Davis hadn't cheated his ass off so badly at UNC, he'd be the no-brainer. But even the SEC can't take the guy in charge of the most blatant cheating in NCAA football since SMU. They'll need a guy with a good clean image (even if it's a false image). I think they'll hire Garrick McGee back from Arky State.

You do, however, get fired for carrying on with an employee. Especially if it started before you hired the employee. We're talking textbook sexual harassment, though I don't imagine the other woman, Jessica Dorrell, is getting much sympathy these days. She was cheating on her fiancé, and she was cheating with the husband of another woman. I get it: Dorrell is not a sympathetic figure to the general public.

But the University of Arkansas is not the general public. The University of Arkansas is a public school with an endowment of more than $1 billion and an annual budget of more than $500 million, and lots of those bucks would be on the line if Jessica Dorrell ever decided to sue her boss at the University of Arkansas on the grounds of sexual harassment.

As repulsive as this whole argument might sound, that is why Petrino has to be fired. Not because he was a bad husband or a liar. He has to be fired because he made Arkansas vulnerable to a monstrous lawsuit, and Arkansas cannot accept that.

Ah yes, how out of hand the sexual harassment laws are. Dorrell wasn't being mistreated because of her sex, but other women who didn't get the job b/c they weren't banging the boss were.

Funny how coaching comes full circle sometimes. After John L. Smith departs Louisville, Bobby Petrino is hired to be the HC. And now, after Bobby Petrino is fired at Arkansas, they bring in John L. Smith to take over for a season.
