1. YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO JOIN IF YOU DO NOT MEET THE JOINING REQUIREMENTS. These are as follows:
  • Please ensure that your role playing skill is to the standard of at least "semi-literate". In plain language, you must be able to write and type decently, with reasonably correct grammar, spelling, and using complete sentences. You must be able to post at least a few sentences fairly regularly.
  • Read the rules before signing up. If you're reading this right now, you probably don't need to worry about this one. And honestly, if you join and then read the rules right away, it's not a problem - no one has any way of knowing.
  • Do not join with malicious intent. This includes joining in order to badger and harass someone, joining to try and ruin the site, or intending to post prohibited materials such as pornography on Phantasma forums.
Hopefully these will not be very difficult requirements to meet. If there is a reason you cannot meet the standards but feel that you should be granted an exception for a fair and understandable reason, please contact me via PM, email, or AIM.

2. HARASSMENT AND ARGUMENT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Intentional or otherwise, harassment (pestering someone, frequently contacting someone after being asked to stop, constant and uncalled-for criticism, etc.) is against the rules and completely unacceptable. If you are being harassed by another member or a certain guest, please contact the administration immediately and they will be either IP banned, suspended, or warned, depending on their intentions and the severity of their infraction.

Arguing with another member is unacceptable as well. This is not to be confused with debating, the calm discussion between two opposing points of view on a subject. If the discussion becomes heated, it might be a good idea to withdraw from the debate, as it could easily turn into an argument. Personal attacks and use of demeaning terms and profanity ("flaming") are considered arguing/harassment, and are punishable as seen fit according to their extent.

If you feel that you are being unfairly treated by another member, including and especially a staff member, please contact administration immediately. Do not try to argue with the person if they are being unreasonable and malicious.

3. PROFANITY IS ALLOWED IN MODERATION. However, please don't go overboard with it, as this could result in Phantasma's deletion by the host site InvisionFree.

Profanity used with malicious intent or in anger against another user is not allowed. Offensive racial/ethnic/social/religious terms are absolutely prohibited except in the civilized debate of topics such as racial segregation or social justice. Please remember to be careful when discussing anything that might be offensive to another person.

It is true, however, that Phantasma greatly encourages freedom of speech, and in general you can post your thoughts without being reprimanded by the staff.

4. ATTEMPT TO COMPLY WITH THE WISHES OF OTHER MEMBERS AND STAFF. This does not mean that you have to do everything another member wants, but please, if someone asks you to stop spamming in their topic, do your best to listen and respond to their wishes. You won't be banned for posting somewhere you're not supposed to, but it's just a matter of general courtesy.

It's true that if topics really aren't supposed to be posted in, the option will be either disabled for specific member groups, or the topic will be locked. However, please refrain from "spamming", or unnecessary, pointless, and irritating messages in inappropriate places. Try to keep out of character posts to a bare minimum in the role playing boards. Also, please read all rules pertaining to things such as character creation and trading.

Incidentally, there is no rule about "bumping old topics". You are free to exercise your right to post on Phantasma whenever and wherever you want. Just please try and use good judgement.

5. USE YOUR OWN WORK. Plagiarism and art theft are strictly prohibited. If you are caught stealing somebody else's work and calling it your own, there will be severe consequences.

The usage of templates and the presentation of fanart are, of course, permitted as long as you give credit to the original artist. For more clear rules about design, art, and character usage, please refer to the Trading Guidelines.

When using somebody else's line, remember to use quotations. You won't be banned for quoting a movie line without the quotation marks, but you may not post stories, poetry, character profiles, et cetera that you did not write.

6. THE FOLLOWING RULES APPLY ONLY IN CHARACTER. In other words, they are valid only when you are role playing on the role playing boards.
  • This is a semi-realistic site. There will be no magic use* of any kind, and characters may not have superpowers or supernatural abilities.
  • You control only the actions of your own character, not anyone else's. In other words, no "powerplaying", or writing out the actions of another person's character. For example, your character can lunge at another character and try to grab his ear, but the other character can dodge. However, please try and keep it realistic, once again. Tying in with in character fighting, no one can dodge every attack, et cetera.
  • If you find it necessary to fight in character, either predetermine the results or be very, very careful, because it is very difficult to fight fairly in a role play, since there are no actual defining statistics. Phantasma has no specific combat rules; as good role players and reasonable people, everyone is expected to be able to work out fights for themselves between their own characters. There may be some differences during wars.

* Some exceptions may occur.

7. MAINTAIN SEPARATION OF IN CHARACTER AND OUT OF CHARACTER. Please remember that what somebody's character says or does in character has nothing to do with what they personally say or do to you out of character. On a role playing forum like Phantasma, it's very important not to let these lines get blurry, because as well as being an RPG site we are a community.
