OOC:// Tell him congrats! I haven't seen him in a while so he probably won't remember me ><. Anyhow, on to business. I was wondering because no one has posted. I was waiting so that Varawyn or Karod could add in their bit, but they never did. Nevertheless, I begin again.

IC: Renvere nodded, her mouth staying in its usual slight smile. She had a rough map to the city, and dearly hoped that her terrible sense of direction would not get them both in a mess.

'"I'd appreciate the assistance. If it's no inconvenience to you, I will travel with you to this inn."

That was the first time someone of another race had ever accepted an extended offer from her. She didn't want to admit it, but it made her feel rather good on the inside.

Her ears pricked as she heard some soldiers shouting loudly (she thought so, anyhow.). To a human it could possibly sound like an argument with no depth to any of the words. As she listened to them shouting a slight description, she smiled. They were looking for him. She knew he seemed out of place in this city. Her curiosity was once again piqued.

She dipped quickly into a smaller alley and gestured with her hand for him to follow. She peered at her crude map. They were in the right direction. Good.

"What are you called, human? For I am sure it is rude to address people by their race alone."

Her voice was softer now. She was trying to piece together what she could with her ears. But at the same time, she did not want him to think she was suspicious. With the next group of description, she nearly gasped. She stopped in mid-stride, and threw off her cloak. Her silver hair glinted in the moonlight and accentuated the ashen pallor of her skin. Without her hooded cloak, her blood-like eyes seemed to glow more ferociously.

"Take this human, for the Lassi have rudimentary knowledge of your attire. If you are questioning where my loyalties lie, I have none. I will do what I have promised, and that is all. I will take you to the inn. No more, no less. The Lassi are none of my business, and your dealings with them are of no consequence to me. So tell me human, do you still wish for my help? If you do, then take this cloak from me with haste. They are almost upon you."

She outstretched her arm to him, the cloak seeming to glimmer in the moonlight.

((OOC: I'm kinda waiting for Varawyn. I could write another post about following her through the city, but that wouldn't be terribly exciting. I guess I'll give it another few days, and if there's no response, move on. I hate to do that though.))

Andrew glanced at the woman, and hesitated before revealing his name. The Lassi were already swarming the city. He didn't want to make it too easy for them.

"You may call me Daren, though I confess it is not my true name. And you? What shall I call you?"

He was glancing at her cautiously, like a cat unsure if the dog is dead or not, but he suddenly jumped back as her cape came twirling off. Eying her warily now, he listened to her hurried speech. She was even more frightening with her cape off. If she had extended her offer to him dressed like this, he never would have accepted it. But, he had given his word.

Slowly, as if forcing his hand to obey, he reached for the cape. Once it touched his fingers, and he was certain it was not going to eat him alive, he swirled it around his shoulders and nodded at this strange new companion of his.

He could hear the soldiers coming ever nearer, and the sound unnerved him.

"Let's go then. I will follow you." He fought to keep the panic out of his voice. He had always hoped to someday have a wife and children and happy little farm in Jampur. He certainly didn't want to die in another world with a monster for a companion by the hands of the Lassion Soldiers.

It was not his idea of a good night.

[OoC: Sorry, sorry, sorry~~! This month has been such a roller coaster... Bleh. I'll try to keep up from now on!]

The white moon's waning crescent was bright in the darkening sky. Varawyn traced along the edges of the alleys, her mind running over various plans and possibilities. Here she was, looking for an unknown figure heading to an unknown location with absolutely no idea where to even begin. For all she knew, the vagabond could have been halfway across the Green Basin and beyond her grasp.

"Is he really worth this?" she murmured. But she had little other choice, and something about this mission both thrilled and spurred her on.

The best part of tracking a city at night was that the refugee had limited options to escape. With stores closing, trade ceasing, and families gathering together at home, there were not many places to run. However, the darkness also brought its own escape. Varawyn was not an elf; she could not hear the crickets chirping on the other side of the city or see the black cat sleeping in the shadows. For this she was envious but not discouraged, knowing that her own ingenuity could make up for a lack of superb senses. Still, having both would have been convenient.

From the corner of her eye, Varawyn thought that she had seen a slight movement behind her as she turned a corner. Her eyes narrowed slightly, but she did not investigate further. Her mind may have been playing tricks on her, in her attempt to quickly find her anonymous target.

Her pace slowed to a leisurely stride as she entered a wide street. Surely someone who was sprinting in the open would draw unnecessary attention. Let the staring be gathered by the clanking soldiers interrupting the silence of the night.

Aside from the dank alleyways and outskirts of the city, the only true option lied inside the inns and vacant buildings. Time was running short, even though the night was young. She could not check every bedroom at an inn, so she needed to find him before he could find safety behind those walls.

One of the inns drew closer with every step. It was a rather underhanded place, but any place was currently better than wandering the streets and hoping to bump into whoever-he-was. Varawyn entered the inn, quickly scanning the nearby tavern area. Two Lassi soldiers sat and gazed at the entry from behind their metal helmets. They glanced at her only briefly before moving on. She obviously did not match the criteria of the fugitive.

The Lassi already had this place covered, then. She had no reason to stay. After taking only a few steps forward, Varawyn turned and left. This seemed too suspicious for the soldiers to leave unchecked. One of them stood and followed while the other continued to survey any who arrived.

The dull sound of metal hitting metal hardly provided the stealth that the guard needed to pursue Varawyn as she walked. The mercenary smirked at the sound, stopping her trek to the next inn. The accompaniment of a Lassi soldier would do nothing but make her job harder than it already was.

..Or harder than it would have been, if not for the stroke of luck that happened upon the sell sword at that exact moment.

From between two buildings, as Varawyn turned her head to comment to the guard, she spotted two silhouetted figures that stood in an alley on the far side of the road. Though not strange enough on its own, the slight but tall frame of one of them struck her intuition with such ferocity that she could not dismiss it. Though she had no proof that this was the man, the circumstances on this night seemed too coincidental to pass up.

The other figure, however, made Varawyn cautious, especially as the cloak was removed and stark silver hair flashed against the darkness. The mercenary tensed involuntarily, grey eyes narrowed. A slight sneer formed on the edge of her lips as the cloak was passed.

Varawyn made no effort to hide--she had been hired neither to sneak nor spy. Whoever they were, the mercenary would find out. She walked slowly towards them, her left hand resting on the hilt of her experienced blade. The other hand, clad with a harsh metal gauntlet, flexed slightly and slowly.

Clank, clank, clank~

Varawyn stopped abruptly. The Lassi soldier had still felt obligated to check on her. Her keen eyes glared sharply at the guard, though that did not deter him from approaching. The soldier needed to be dealt with, but by doing so, Varawyn risked the chance of pursuing the strangers in the distance. Her jaw clenched with annoyance.

Her obligations were clear, and Varawyn began walking toward the pair a bit faster than before. The suspicious soldier would have to wait; she could explain everything to him later.

Karod slipped through the alleyways, silently following this woman. From the meandering path she was taking, she was either trying to lose a follower-- which didn't reassure him at all-- or she wasn't entirely sure where she was going.

It was growing tiring, and Karod was considering giving up the chase. After all, what sense is there in following some woman on behalf of a man he knew nothing about?

Then, the wind brought him soft words that she had whispered, imagining no one would hear. It was not much, but it broke the monotony and reminded him why he was scampering through this dark city. Justice... He would ensure that justice reigned on this depressing night.

His target slowed as she neared the lights of one of the city's many inns, and Karod slipped into a shadowed doorway to watch her. She made her way into the building, and Karod stood, weighing the consequences of following her and remaining here. Just as he was preparing to make his own way to the door, she stepped back out, and not far behind her was a soldier in the uniform of the Lassion Empire. The woman turned her head as if to speak to him, but then closed her mouth before sound came out. Her gaze was fixed on a strange couple in a nearby street. She walked, and the Lassi followed.

What sort of mercenary enlisted aid from soldiers? Karod frowned. It didn't make much sense, but that was what appeared to have happened. The woman walked purposefully toward the other people, followed by the soldier.

Karod made a quick decision, and stepped into the parade. He moved silently up behind the soldier and gave him a sharp blow to the back of the head. The man crumpled, and would have made quite the racket as he fell if Karod had not caught his falling body. He laid him silently on the ground, and sprinted quickly back to hiding in the shadows. Hopefully, he had moved quickly enough that the mercenary would not see him when she would turn around to see why the soldier no longer made his noise.

Renvere smiled at the strange man she was leading. It was good that he consented to her offer of help. She wanted to study him a bit more.

"You may call me Renvere. That is my real name. I entrust it to you."

She was about to ask another question when she heard footsteps fast approaching them. With her hands, faster than a human eye, she flipped out her twin axes. She swiveled towards the direction and saw a human coming at them with purpose. She had blatant curiosity written on her face. Ren knew that feeling quite well. She also noticed one more thing that made her feel elated. The woman, upon seeing her, had tensed. Renvere's mind came to a fun conclusion. To make this human know what fear was.

Ren straightened her back and lifted her head. She twitched her axes so that the light just barely glinted off them. Hopefully the woman would take the hint. Her red eyes slanted into slits and she made the most intimidating expression she could muster.

She also could not help but notice as the woman's partner (or so it seemed), a Lassi soldier, fell to the ground with a thud. Perhaps these humans didn't notice the swift movements, but it was definitely an Elf. Could this woman have an enemy? If so, she and 'Daren' would be free to move about their business. That would be divine.

A small breeze lofted past Ren. The night was perfect. Now that the sun had gone down she could see perfectly. Everything was illuminated in her sight. She felt a crooked and malicious smile take her lips as she thought about some old fashioned hand to hand combat. If there was one thing she enjoyed most, it was fighting. The old scar at the base of her throat throbbed, and Renvere knew that she had to take precautions. A marred woman was a hideous woman.

Her voice came out finally, and she allowed her malicious smile to return to her face:

"Can I help you, human?"

Her breathing became quickened with anticipation. But if worse came to worse, she would cover Daren while he ran.
