Drama. Unrequited love. Hate. Affection. Desire.
Without most of the above qualities in life (unlike most of the Hogwarts students), you'd think the Narnian royalties had it easy. But you are wrong. Even Narnia had it's own fair share of melodramatic scenes. Let's take a look at the High King's love life, for example. King Peter and his royal siblings had been reigning for nearly four years in Cair Paravel when they came. They were the Sandese royal offspring, members of the Xien clan (much like the Tudor royal family of England) actually on evacuation, to avoid being injured in a bloody war going on between their home country Sandao and Calormen. Yongqi was the crown prince, Shin and Heem were his younger brothers (and twins), and finally there was Arim. Arim was the same age as Peter. She was beautiful and kind, caring, loving and lovable. When their eyes met, there was instant attraction between them. Plus, almost everyone agreed that they made a cute couple.
As time passed while the Sandese princes’ and princess were in Cair Paravel, unhappy news came in the form of a weary, injured messenger from the warfield. The King and Queen of Sandao had been killed in battle; the King's three concubines and their seven children prisoners of the Calormenes; Sandao taken and now rendered the Tisroc's property. All four Sandese siblings were grief-stricken - especially Arim and Heem. Yongqi was strong, and as Crown Prince, he did not cry. Shin, although the more mischiveous (and rude and loud-mouthed, as Yongqi and Arim would say) one of the twins, was stronger than his brother. But Heem had been more of a scholar, and Arim had been gifted artistically. Both suffered horribly during the weeks following Sandao's fall.
During these hard times, Arim sought comfort in Peter. She really had no choice, as although strong and courageous, Yongqi had also turned bitter and was not talking to anyone. Heem was almost destroyed mentally, and Shin was no longer the perky, mischiveous, annoying younger brother he had been. Noticing Arim's distress, Susan wrote to Peter and Lucy, who had been in Archenland, meeting the King and doing ambassador things. They both came like a shot arrow on the Splendor Hyaline, and upon seeing Peter, Arim collapsed in his arms. Who cares about Sandese court rules anyway?
Arim depended on Peter during mental recovery, and in a few months, she was about 99% the old Princess Arim. Her relationship with Peter deepened, and a few months ago, during a ball at Cair Paravel celebrating Queen Lucy's birthday, Peter confessed to Arim his feelings, and so forth started the courtship of the High King of Narnia and the Princess of Sandao. There are only two problems. One is the Crown Prince Yongqi. He feels... somewhat discontented about Arim's relationship with Peter. He's Sandese all the way, as opposed to Arim and the younger twins who are quickly turning Narnian. Sandese moral rules forbid courtship or what we Earthlings would call 'dating', and apart from that, Yongqi believed that Peter and Arim were not 'for' each other. He preferred that if Arim was going to be in an 'immoral' relationship anyway, she was going to be in one with a native Sandese. Like, for example, Ruki.
And that's the next problem. Ruki Saki (coincidental rhyme) was the son of the King of Sandao's right hand man, and best friends with Yongqi and Arim. He was just a year above Arim, and had loved her passionately. (As for Arim, meh. She neither hated him nor loved him, so... Whatever.) They had been pledged to marry a couple of years ago, but just a week before the marriage date, the war broke out. Ruki went out to fight in the war, and mysteriously disappeared during one of the battles. He was presumed dead, and eventually Arim forgot him.
But the truth is that he had only been taken hostage by the Calormenes, and had been the slave of a Calormene Tarkaan until recently. After several events such as inward power struggles, assaults on the house by drunk burglars, and one of the servants dieing from overload, Ruki managed to escape miraculously. He had heard that Arim was at Cair Paravel, and he came, for he had never forgotten the loved one of his youth. Needless to say, when he found out that the High King of Narnia was courting Arim, he was... a bit discouraged, to say the least. And now he is determined to win Arim back.
