subplot one scorpius malfoy ; lillian potter
whatever you do now, the fire still burns whatever you do now, the world still turns
The relationship between Slytherin’s and Gryffindor’s in the year 2022 is, needless to say, much better than it was in previous years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It had finally come to a time in which all the students attending Hogwarts could openly be friends with whomever they wished. However, there was still obvious friction between two families – the Malfoy’s and the Potter’s. Well, Draco and Harry to be more precise. They could put up with each other and had accepted the fact that neither was better than the other, but it was still clear that they still despised the other. Lily Potter of 2022 was a simple, intelligent, outgoing fifth year; a bright young student who would like nothing better to outshine her brother’s in the attention column. Scorpius Malfoy was the type that would stop at nothing to peeve off his father. He even charmed his hair permanently brown to get to his father’s nerves – which, needless to say, worked. To Scorpius, Lily was everything. She was the most perfect human being ever to grace this ball of rock – or so Scorpius thought. To Lily, Scorpius was just another student at Hogwarts.
Problematic, much?
Scorpius was busy doing nothing while strolling absent-mindedly around the lake, while Lily hid underneath a large oak tree – the very oak tree which her parents and grandparents sat under so many years before – drawing. As per usual. It was a clear morning that the two officially met, Scorpius with his surprised stutters and Lily with her confused embarrassment. All in all, they became friends very quickly. And it wasn’t until halfway through their second year that they ran in to any real problems in their friendship.
“You’re a Malfoy?!” Lily whispered angrily to Scorpius across the table, “You always told me that your last name was Logan!!” Scorpius hung his head in shame. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Lily continued, a little calmer. “I – I didn’t think it mattered …” Scorpius trailed off, this is what he had been expecting. “Of course it matters! Our parents hated each other! They went out of their way to make each others lives miserable! My father almost killed yours!!” She said, clearly not very proud of the last fact. “But why should that mean we have to hate each other?” Scorpius whispered sadly. “Because … because …” Lily struggled to find the right wording. “Because that’s just the way it is!” She said, and – as if on que – the bell rang shrilly and Lily grabbed her belongings and stormed out of the classroom.
Three months later, and Scorpius was still trying as hard as he possibly could to get back on Lily’s good side, where he could have another chance at something more than friendship. Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to be able to even get that. That was, until Lily asked all of her friends for advice. The varied opinions on the matter definitely made Lily think harder about why she wasn’t remaining friends with the only person who ever truly understood her. So, she decided to let it go.
One day on patrol, Lily caught up with Scorpius while they were alone. “You’re right.” Lily said suddenly. “Uh … what?” Scorpius replied dumbly. “I said, you’re right.” Lily repeated. “Are you talking to me?” Scorpius answered, dumbfounded. “No, I’m talking to myself. OF COURSE I’M TALKING TO YOU!” Was Lily’s sarcastic response. “Really?” His voice was dripping with hope. “Yes.” Lily said certainly. “So … I’m right, then.” Scorpius said a little smugly, but it didn’t look right as it was combined with a lot of happiness. “Yes.” Lily responded, her confidence slipping. “I’m so sorry!” Her voice broke. “I didn’t mean all of those things I said, I just didn’t like the idea of disobeying my dad but now that I think about it I’m not really and it was a really, really stupid thing to do and I have absolutely no reason at all to not be your friend because I really do want to be your friend or maybe even something more and I don’t care what my dad thinks because I –“ “Wait, wait, wait.” Scorpius interrupted, watching as tears shone in the corners of Lily’s eyes. “What did you say?” “I – I don’t c-care what my dad thinks …?” “No, before that.” “I d-do want to be your f-friend …?” Scorpius shook his head, “After that.” “… M-maybe, and I don’t mind if you don’t feel the same way, but … maybe, possibly, something more than just … friends.” Scorpius blinked, at a complete loss of words. “Are you angry?” Lily asked sheepishly. Scorpius shook his head once more, “Just worried.” Lily looked confused, “What for?” “Worried about how you’re going to react.” “To what …?” Scorpius took a deep breath. “To this.” And with that, Scorpius covered the distance between them in one step and kissed the girl before him full on the mouth.
Lily did not object.
The word that Lily Potter and Scorpius Malfoy were dating was certainly a very surprising piece of information that travelled very quickly throughout the school. But how would their parents take it? There’s only one way to find out, but neither Lily nor Scorpius very brave enough to tell their parents. But, Draco and Harry will find out sooner or later. Lily and Scorpius are just hoping that it’s later.
