Hello all,

I haven't posted since 2009, but I have a really good reason involving a detour to southwest Asia and some unique accomodations. That being said, I have brought offerings to appease the community.

I hate real life somtimes, but if it weren't for real life I wouldn't be able to buy all this forge workd stuff. Enough talk! I'm working on an Istvann III army whih will evpand as my group progresses our Horus Heresy campaign this year. We are a small group, so if any of you are in the Shenandoah valley area let me know we need more pre-heresy enthusiasts!

First up are two test models for the Sons of Horus. Not sure about the greem. If you guys think it sucks or if you have a better base color, pease let me know. I think they look kind of like Mantis Warriors or Sons of Medusa. The base green color is VMC Intermediate Green.

Below are the first squad of death guard legionaries I have finished up. I'm waiting on some bits to come in so I can finish the squad sergeant. I have anoher ten and a contemptor soaking in simple green as I type this.

Let me know what you think!

The SoH look a bit too green, like Mantis Warriors as you said, but they look great. The Death Guard however, look awesome. I would like to know how you got that effect on the armour.

I think you're right. The green needs to be paler.

Try Vallejo German uniform green.

The weathering is great and I love the death guard - how did you do both?

Well done.

As above, the green needs to be lighter - towards an almost jade tone.

The Death Guard, are, however, perfect. Spot-on off-white and the grimy weathering effect is fantastic. Probably the best attempt at the colour scheme I've seen so far.

I really like the green on th SoH's I think it's nice to see a different tone of green than the usual biggrin.gif

The DG's are so great, but I think it's a real shame you didn't go with the fw melta guns for them since you'v given them phobos bolters, but's that said they still look awesome biggrin.gif

Thanks for the input guys!

@ Dargor. I really like the color you have on your SoH. I think i'm going to steal it!
@ TDA. I probably should have stuck with the FW melta, but there just something about the look of the regular meltas that fits the death guard. I like the bulky, utilitarian look. Thanks for the positive comments on the green. I think it looks cool too, but it just doesn't fit the SoH.

The death guard weathering is actually pretty simple. I start with a base coat of black, then overspray with a white tamiya spray. It's very fine and evenly coats without gumming up any detail.

The first base coat is a thinned layer of Vallejo sky grey. I then follow up with a glaze of Vallejo english uniform. Sky grey is then re-applied, leaving english uniform in the recesses.

I then apply a very targeted wash to the recesses and anywhere I think the armor needs some color, the a very thin highlight is applied to all the edges.

I will probably end up adding some paint chips and weathering powders.

When I start painting the next squad I will post a tutorial.

Thanks everyone for the commenst!

Hello all,

Not much of an update, but still. I've painted up a few more Death Guard, but they all look the same as the ones shown earlier. I did paint up one of the sergeants so I figured I would post a pic.

user posted image

Below I lined up a few death guard to show the steps I went though to get that gritty, dirty armor look. I still have to add some paint chips and weathering powders, but I will try and keep it to a minimum.

user posted image

As always, comments and critiques are more than welcome. The SoH are on hold until I finish up more Death Guard.

Finally, just for fun.....

Death Guard are perfect.
The Sons need a bit more grey in the green.
I use a 50/50 of Panzer Aces Highlight Russ I tkcr # 329 and Afrika Korps Tankcrew # 336.

I saw the VMC color green-grey that looks like it might be good too.
The weathering on all of them are great.

Glad to have you back.

Thanks for the comments!

I have some new paints coming in the mail this week, so I wil be posting some new SoH soon. I'm about halfway though the second squad of DG sternguard, and next up are the terminators.

Probably post some new pics later this week.

The DG legion symbol is free hand, I will post a tutorial later this weeks.

Hey everyone. Quick update on the death guard/istvaan III army. I got a bit distracted by painting up a word bearer for the TGC invitational thread. That was a lot of fun and a nice mental break from putting together the Death Guard. I painted up a few more legionaries.

I was orginally going to paint up a DG assault squad, but I thought that the look just doesn't fit. I think the models I built as the assault marines don't really look like death guard so I painted one up as a World Eater.

I also got the ten terminators built, and now I am just waiting on my maxmini shoulderpads to show up i the mailbox.

The first guy up is a bear-headed DG legionaire. I needed something to break up the monotony of the MKII suits and add a little character to the squads.

Next up is a World Eater, i've always wanted to paint up some World Eaters and it was fun painting this guy.

And of course the terminators...

Not the best picture, but they're not done yet. I will post some better pics in the future when they are done.

Enjoy!

Your DG look absolutely fantastic! And I have been thinking about the WE pre-heresy colors when reading about them in the books and haven't been able to visualize them since they don't get the artistic coverage that the other legions do! I hope my weathering techniques are up to par when I start finishing up a raven guard Istvaan V diorama!! Great work, keep it up!

Hey everyone, kind of a pic heavy update, but I just want to prove to everybody that I haven't given up. I have finally finished up my HQ and two troops selections so now I can get on to more interesting stuff.

I atill have to make a few heavy weapons marines and a few more meltas in there so I have some flexibility across PH rulesets. I will also eventually get to the business of modeling a devastator squad.

Here are the first two tactical squads which can also double as sternuard depending on what rules I use.

And my HQ is... guess who!! I use him as Captain Sicarius when playing C:SM

The chest eagle was a colossal pain to scuplt. Unlike some of the other members on this forum, I am pretty awful with green stuff. I'm trying to get better, I promise.

And here are a few things I have lined up to work on:

I think I will work on the contemptor next.

CONTEMPTOR DONE!! I have to say this was a fun model to paint. The second I saw this model I knew I was going to own (at least) one. All I could think of was the old Epic box art. I loved being able to work on a larger model because I could play wit a little more sopisticated weathering. Great model, easy to clean up the aquila and purity seals and deceptively easy to paint.
