Very early days but I'm thinking of building a new army that I hope to use with the fabled new Chaos Legion Codex coming out sometime next year.

I cannot decide between the Sons of Horus or the Black Legion.

Technically Black Legion can be a Scouring period army?

I need your help to decide brothers.

I would say go for the Black Legion but have a very veteran orientated army. That way you have an army which can be used for 40k, possibly the late Scouring period and can also be used to represent the Justarian during earlier eras.

I'm unsure exactly when the SOH became the BL, but you should note that the Justaerin were exclusively Terminators.

I was reading the Codex and it says after a few hundred years in the Eye of Terror the other traitor legions combined to destroy the last Sons of Horus fortress and stole Horus' body in the process in a failed attempt to clone him.

Once this happened Abaddon led a counter attack to destroy Horus' body. The Sons of Horus (primarily due to Abaddon's anger at the situation) then renounced Horus and renamed themselves the Black Legion.

So I think it would not work as a Scouring era army as
1 I don't think the scouring lasted hundreds of years
2 the Sons of Horus were in the Eye of Terror when they renamed themselves and they only entered the Eye at the end of the Scouring.

Oh well.

Still doesn't make up my mind though but Sons of Horus would allow me to 'eventually' build a Horus... hmmmm

Do you guys care to share your recipes for the green.

I'm thinking of using Vallejo German army green as a base but not sure what to add for highlights.

Right now i'm leaning towards Vallejo USMC Tank Crew and White 50:50 and extra white for highlights. I'm gonna try straight USMC Tank Crew Highlight as soon as i get my hands on one.

It's looking like Vallejo German uniform green, followed by 50:50 with bleached bone and then final highlight with 75:25 bleached bone:German uniform.

Have to dig out that boarding marine...

Ok, I've made my first purchases to see how this goes.

My army will start with Sicarius who will be the Captain and a boarding marine who will be a Sgt.

I've just been told of a 1000pts tournie at WHW on 11 Feb which I want to attend.

The aim is to get 1000pts painted by then.

I think I'll use the current Codex Chaos but need help making a list that is
A) fluffy for Sons of Horus
competitive. So I don't get completely creamed (this is not as important as being fluffy though)

This should help me get a core done quickly.

Oh, I don't want to use termies. Daemons, possibly.

Any tips?

Well here is a first attempt at a list using Codex: Chaos Space Marines (1000pts):

Chaos Lord
Daemon weapon, Mark of Nurgle

Daemon Prince
Mark of Nirgle, Doombolt

Chaos Space Marine squad (x10)
Aspiring Champion, power weapon, Icon of Nurgle, Melta gun x 2

Chaos Space Marine squad (x10)
Aspiring Champion, power fist, Icon of Nurgle, Melta gun x 2

Chaos Space Marine Havoc squad (x5)
Aspiring Champion, Missile launcher x 2, Lascannon x 2

The main aim of this list is to get a core of an army together and to look good.

I've intentionally not included any vehicles yet as budget is a factor.

I've used Mark of Nurgle but it won't be modelled that way (I just thought that was the best mark to use).

I can see the army getting battered at competition but I think it should be fun.

What do you think? Do you think I should try using Codex: Space Marines instead?

The choice of codex depends on how you want to model the army.Going for Heresy/late Heresy era?Codex Chaos, daemons and eight pointed starts all around.Going for late Great Crusade/Early Heresy? Codex Marines or Codex Space Wolves. I plan to use C:SW myself. Its good for representing the relatively unruly nature of the Legion (when compared to EC and UM that is) and i believe that the wolves are the closest you can get to Legion organisation without using the Codex Astartes or Daemonic/Chaotic stuff. And since the basic squads (GHs and CSMs) are similarly armed, you can make an easy transition from that codex to Chaos Legions when its released.


If you stick with Codex Chaos, i must recomend a squad of Chosen armed to the teeth with Meltaguns/Plasmaguns. They can infiltrate or outflank and your all infantry force will be able to benefit a bit from that.

I'm going with this list:

Chaos Lord

The idea is that the more veteran elements of the army will look more chaosy so when I get round to making a unit of chosen they will have actual chaos stars on them and flayed skin like in Visions of Heresy.

I'm only using the list to help me build an army.

@Dargor - Which legion badge will you use and what will you be putting on the right shoulder pad?

I think I will use the standard egyptian eye on the left and no idea what for the right yet.

Personally I would go with the black jump pack assault troops - works really whell offsetting the sea green armour - then you could have either raptors/possessed with wings or a squad of skyclaws with a wolf priest (which is a mighty combo) or a vanguard vet squad for space marines.

but ultimately they would look awesome and give you that punch you don't have as there are no termies.

@Byram - I noticed that half way through painting - quite amusing. I did think about using green stuff to make the hand more like it was clenched but thought nah forget it... (yo home to Bell Air)

@Ben - Thanks dude - I have painted the model as the armour and back pack are not yet medled to his flesh (I didn't want to blend the green of the armour with the red of the flesh so they are quite distinct. On the model the back back is 'melded' to the best at the back so I kept it green. Thanks for the suggested list options. I think I'll stick with C:CSM at the moment, to be honest it'll be a stretch to get 1,000pts finished for the singles tournie at WHW anyway.

Next on the table is the Sicarius conversion and the first sergeant - hope to make a start on the sgt tonight.

Lovely shade of green! Works great against the red too. I particularly like the fact that he appears to be levitating above his base too. Behold the power of Chaos!

Can't wait for the Sicarus conversion to be painted, keep it up!
