I have not yet read any HH books, but have just learnt my local library has some - yippee!
I know from IA that zealous IF become BT, young IF become CF (who were Crusading for 8K years, as BT or UM~esque, I wonder which one?) and the others remain IF.
I guess SD get retro squeezed in there somehow....

Is there much about the BT and SD elements entwined in the IF during pre-heresy?

Sigismund's company is mentioned as being called the Templars (I think--can't recall the source, though), and it's either stated or implied that his personal heraldry is the Maltese Cross as used by the Black Templars.

Nothing about the Soul Drinkers, though... I have not read the Soul Drinkers novels, but vaguely understand they were meant to be Imperial Fists successors. The one thing I'd say about that is that none of the older fluff, or HH novels, have hinted at them (with the Crimson Fists and Black Templars have been listed as the only known Second Founding successors).

The Soul Drinkers are definitely IF successors, one of the books has them fighting a grudge match against the Crimson Fists about being traitors to Dorn. I don't think they are second founding but in the TF pack there is a captain of the Soul Drinkers Assault Company listed. That formation could have conceivably split from the IF chapter in a later founding.

I guess you could arguably have a black templars looking army at the siege of the Emperors palace, as I seem to remeber some fluff about Sigmund painting his armour black at the seige so perhaps some of his men followed suit? It seems that it wasn't unknown for one company to have a differant colourscheme to the chapter if it had some sort of battle honour or other.

The original background story about the Emperor's Champion certainly shows that Sigismund himself repainted his armour black during the Siege of Terra following his being named as the 'Emperor's Champion' by Dorn - this is the source of the tradiiton of selecting an Emperor's Champion in the Black Templars today. However, his company of Imperial Fists would have kept their original heraldry until the founding of the Black Templars - the change of heraldry was a the result of a personal honour for Sigismund himself rather than his company as a whole.
