|The Great Crusade > Welcome to the Great Crusade: News and Events > CONTEST: TGC Short Fiction 2009|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Sep 14 2009, 05:33 PM|
| The veteran TGC members know what this is all about...
After Games Day last year, we decided to give the writers among us the chance to put their creative talents to good use and pen some original M31 fan-fiction. Experience has shown that there are some very gifted writers out there and so we are following up this year with another TGC fiction contest.
The idea is once again to find the best short stories produced by our members, and offer them as a downloadable fan-fiction anthology... with an introduction by Horus Heresy editor and top BL author NICK KYME!
Nick is very excited to be part of this competition, and is looking forward to seeing what our members can come up with. He will read all the entries and pick the overall winner before writing an introduction about the work that our entrants have produced. The whole anthology will be named and compiled as Tales from the Great Crusade: Volumes 1 & 2 in a downloadable PDF file, and who knows where it could go from there...? Also, all entrants who are published in the final anthology and who are also members of the Champions or Loyalists membership groups will receive a glossy printed copy of the anthology signed by some of the big names in the Horus Heresy novel series.
Ok, let's move onto the contest rules:
Entry is open to ALL members and moderators (and admin!) of The Great Crusade boards, but each member can only enter this contest ONCE.
Your entry must be an original piece of fan-fiction, not more than 1000 words in length... and that word count will be STRICTLY enforced! The content of the short story should be thematically appropriate to the subject matter of the Great Crusade and/or the Horus Heresy, as per the usual criteria for posting on this forum. Other than that, you have complete freedom to write whatever you like.
Entries should be made by emailing them as a Microsoft Word-readable document to
and you will receive a hand-typed confirmation from me when it is received. If you have any questions, queries, problems etc, please post them here in this thread.
The final, absolute and irrefutable deadline for entries will be
23:59 GMT on Thursday December 31st 2009
after which point this thread will be closed for posting and the email address will be set to return incoming mail. No entries will be accepted after this point, through any medium. This means the contest will be running for more than three months, which means you will all have plenty of time to get your creative juices flowing and redraft your ideas to your heart's content!
I hope you're all as excited about this contest as we are, and I'm personally looking forward to seeing what you can all come up with for your entries. Last year Dan Abnett was our celebrity judge, and now Nick Kyme - an in-house Black Library editor - will be reading your work too...!
Please do publicise this contest on any other forum or gaming groups that you think will have any interest in it, although please bear in mind that it is not in any way affiliated with any GW or BL contest which may have similar criteria.
Good luck to all, and I'm off to put pen to paper right now...

I'm glad to see the return of this competition as I missed it last time around.
Time to get brain storming

I'll get this one done!
|Posted by: Benedict Arnold Sep 14 2009, 08:50 PM|
|Rock. Nicely done Shroud, your ability to line stuff like this up is top notch.|
|Posted by: Mortarion Sep 14 2009, 09:00 PM|
|Count me in on this one ^.^ Now, to write about my Iron Warriors or my Custodes...hmmmmmmmmmm|
|Posted by: Yvraith Sep 14 2009, 10:52 PM|
| I'll give this one a go too.
I enjoyed writing my last one.
Now who, when & where to write about.
|Posted by: KRUG_666 Sep 15 2009, 07:26 AM|
|Count me in for SURE this time.|
|Posted by: Itkovian Sep 15 2009, 08:55 AM|
|Making this a yearly thing is a great idea. I won't make any promises, but I'll certainly try to make it for this one (only took me 1.5 years to enter my first contest on here, two in the space of 4 months might be too much...)|
|Posted by: Magos Explorator Sep 15 2009, 05:26 PM|
|Good work on getting this going a second time. I'll see what I can come up with!|
|Posted by: Lord Commander Lucius Sep 15 2009, 06:15 PM|
|I might actually enter this if college doesn't interfer too much. Now who to write about?|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Sep 15 2009, 06:18 PM|
| I wonder what will be the predominant topic this time? Last time it was definitely invasions/compliance of non-Imperial worlds... I've got two or three ideas, one of which I have already mentioned on the boards...
I know for definite that if I want to improve my writing from last time, I need to get away from recounting action/events in the third person. It's been done to death, and I think I will try a different tack this time.
|Posted by: Arden Fell Sep 16 2009, 01:37 PM|
| I'm in.
I have plenty of scope for the 17th's early days. Especially with the characters now established in my mind.
|Posted by: BigWill Sep 16 2009, 02:22 PM|
| I'll put this up on my blog "Heresy Workshop" as soon as I get home.

| hmmm, I think I have an idea that will be fiarly different to the rest IMO
if this i anything like last year it will be a fantastic compatition
|Posted by: Cyrox Sep 20 2009, 09:26 PM|
| So glad this is running again, I missed the deadline last year I'll definately enter this one
Great stuff - thanks for organising it!
|Posted by: Gagoc TheAncient Sep 20 2009, 09:41 PM|
| I have two questions.
Is the *.wps file format alright?
And can it be an elaboration of something we've done before? By that I mean can it either follow on from a previous piece we've done, or can we beef-up a previously posted something, quickly written to illustrate an idea?
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Sep 20 2009, 10:44 PM|
| You can enter whatever you'd like, as long as it follows the contest rules.
Just bear in mind that Nick will have read the last anthology and so will have seen all previous entries.
|Posted by: Mossy Toes Sep 22 2009, 12:36 AM|
| Saw this on another site, and, being fairly confident of my writing abilities, I want in.
I'll be making my entry as soon as I can come up with a powerful idea.
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Sep 29 2009, 03:43 PM|
| Entries are already coming in now, some very cool stuff!
Can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with.
|Posted by: Arden Fell Sep 29 2009, 08:13 PM|
| This may seem daft but I take it we can only submit one story?
My fiction head is in overdrive at the moment.
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Sep 29 2009, 11:00 PM|
|Yes - one entry per person. It's in the first rule of the first post...|

| That's very cool! I've always tried to do something like that, to help crystallise a character in my mind before I write them. Sometimes I write an imaginary letter from that person to someone else in the story, to see what comes out when I put pen to paper... it can sometimes surprise you, what your own characters do and say!
As something of a teaser for my entry, here is my main character's profile according to BBL's list:

| Dammit BBL!
My tale is about the Iron Warriors too!
I guess they'll be rather popular in this anthology then.
My entry is currently at the proof reading stage.
My characters (in my longer efforts) tend to develop as the story progresses.
I often start with them intending to go one way but end up going in another.
|Posted by: lord_caldera Oct 14 2009, 01:09 AM|
|My story involves the Iron Warriors as well! (though in more of a supporting role) There must be something about lots of tanks and explosions that this round's entrants like.|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Oct 14 2009, 01:23 AM|
| Unless the legion is VERY important to the story, we can usually change it after judging so as to give more different legions a role in the anthologies.
For example, last time BBL's World Eater became a traitor from the Emperor's Children instead; and Lord Naughty Bitz's Luna Wolves became White Scars - the story remains the same, but we don't get lots of WE, LW/SoH and WB in every one!
Having said that, if the legion is very important (i.e. Kharn being found by the WE in Lord Caldera's 'The Gift of the God', or the Word Bearers in Absyrtus' 'Deus Imperator') then we leave it as-is.
Just to reiterate - this does not affect the judging, and Nick Kyme will read your unedited original versions.
|Posted by: Battle Brother Loken Oct 14 2009, 01:39 PM|
|I choose this legion thinking no one else would do it|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Oct 14 2009, 02:40 PM|
|I'm sure that was why everyone did World Eaters last time too...|
|Posted by: Mossy Toes Oct 17 2009, 02:11 PM|
|Well, no fear here. I don't think that many other people will be doing Mongols...|

Now, nobody had better be using the Word Bearers...

I changed mine to Word Bearers to let you have the Scars! Heavens no!
...jokes xD I didn't

|Posted by: Yvraith Nov 21 2009, 05:00 AM|
| Decided to bite the bullet and enter mine as is.
PM/email incoming Shroud.
|Posted by: renlegunvrs Nov 21 2009, 11:25 PM|
|count me in!|
|Posted by: Arden Fell Nov 25 2009, 12:57 PM|
Did you get mine, only I haven't recieved a " hand-typed confirmation from me when it is received"?
Also how the list going?
|Posted by: Brother Handro Nov 25 2009, 02:50 PM|
| Looking forward to this again.
Count me in this time!
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Nov 25 2009, 06:09 PM|
| Apologies if you haven't yet received a confirmation email - we've been having issues with the studio computers and Office software...
I have put the list on the first post, although more entries have arrived since then!
|Posted by: The Sigillite Nov 25 2009, 07:26 PM|
|Id be willing to try, if I just had some more info on the 1k sons legion organisation and traditions... Not much to go on at the moment|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Nov 25 2009, 07:50 PM|
|The new books won't be out until after the deadline. Unlucky.|
|Posted by: Vinnie Nov 25 2009, 10:40 PM|
Make some stuff up. I always got the impresion that before the Council of Nikea the Thousand Sons practically did what they wanted anyway...
O' course... you could write about a lodge within the legion, or an equivalent, clandestine movement. Could even make it pre-crusade...
Just some suggestions
I personally am just waiting for next years contest now...
I stupidly rushed my entry and so it turned out really weak compared to the others I've seen from last year; no interesting ideas... not forgetting that old chestnut of having a hundred much better ideas since I submitted it
Ah well -sigh-
|Posted by: lord_caldera Nov 27 2009, 03:35 AM|
Best advice I've heard for this. It's so much easier and more fun getting into characters and stories if you just invent them as you go. For the last one I made up a birthplace for Kharn, and that was just before Tales of Heresy came out. Since the books aren't out yet you have more freedom for writing.
|Posted by: Battle Brother Loken Nov 27 2009, 06:38 AM|
|Sadly i am not sure if i can get mine done|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Nov 27 2009, 02:03 PM|
| That is the laziest thing I ever heard...
It takes two hours to write a 1000-word draft, and maybe a week to re-read and revise it as you go, if you feel it needs it.
You have over a MONTH until the deadline.
|Posted by: Fulgrim Nov 27 2009, 04:09 PM|

I did mine in my lunch hour.
and it shows.....
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Nov 27 2009, 10:17 PM|
|Aye, I did mine in two 30-minute sittings. My entry last year took me 90 minutes including rewrites.|
|Posted by: ahriman Nov 27 2009, 10:37 PM|
|Oddly i spent ages on mine, but then again i am looking at writing as a career choice and am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to writing, just got to think of a title then sending it off.|
|Posted by: Iron Corsair Nov 30 2009, 02:40 PM|
|Quick question, do we use our real names, or our user names for the contest?|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Nov 30 2009, 04:11 PM|
|As in the previous contest anthology PDF, please supply both your screen name and your real name.|
|Posted by: Iron Corsair Dec 2 2009, 02:02 PM|
| Thanks Shroud! That's really the only reason why I don't participate in these contests, is because I'm not too comfortable with posting my real name.
Anywho, best of luck to those who entered, and I can't wait to see what you guys' stories are!
|Posted by: Arden Fell Dec 2 2009, 03:13 PM|
What's wrong with that?
|Posted by: Iron Corsair Dec 2 2009, 03:27 PM|
|It's not like I'm embarrassed by my name, it's just I'm not sure if I can trust people here, since it is the internet after all.|
|Posted by: Arden Fell Dec 2 2009, 04:06 PM|
| I see.
That Shroud guy does look a bit shifty if you ask me. I wouldn't want him to known my name either....
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Dec 2 2009, 04:16 PM|
| Hey, I know everyone's email, real names, IP addresses and date of birth. I could just post it anyway, but I choose to leave that up to people's own discretion.
You can post your real name and NOT your screen name if you prefer. Remember that the Black Library editors will be reading these stories - it would be wise for you not to be COMPLETELY untraceable.
I've really never seen the problem with knowing people's names. No one can steal your identity or your story just from knowing your name. Unless you are an Old Testament demon, of course...
|Posted by: Pacific Dec 2 2009, 07:08 PM|
|Aye, or Ged from Earthsea is reading these forums!|
|Posted by: Marshall Wilhelm Dec 3 2009, 03:42 AM|
| Add another Iron Warriors piece to the collection....
I won't submit it yet. I might have a fiddle with it.
So is that 75% IW pieces yet?
|Posted by: Iron Corsair Dec 3 2009, 01:20 PM|
I suppose that is true....I'll think about. I still have lots of school work to do. If I do enter, I think I'll write about the Imperial Navy.

|I am back in the race|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Dec 12 2009, 11:55 PM|

BBL - welcome back!

|I'm debating between The Second to Last Church, a rebuttal of sorts to The Last Church or Dusk Raider Till Dawn. I haven't written either yet, but I have some solid ideas for both. Which appeals to you all?|
|Posted by: Pacific Dec 16 2009, 08:21 AM|
|2nd to last church? It doesn' t star Lesley Nielson does it?|
|Posted by: Iacton Dec 16 2009, 11:10 AM|
Dusk Raider til Dawn....
Does it have naked vampires and Harvey Keitel? If so it gets my vote
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Dec 16 2009, 04:42 PM|
|"Penultimate Church", surely...?|
|Posted by: Astelan Dec 16 2009, 08:49 PM|

I hope it's readable.
|Posted by: Kharn Dec 22 2009, 03:14 AM|

Well at least a topic that people will enjoy reading.
|Posted by: lord_caldera Dec 22 2009, 04:24 AM|
|I've got the same problem. Just can't get jazzed about a topic this time around. Hopefully something will come to me. Either way I'm excited for everyone else's!|
|Posted by: King Fluff Dec 22 2009, 10:39 AM|
Have you thought about using Blurb.com for publishing the short fiction comp for the board members - I believe you can have it as a closed sale where you invite people to purchase - so could perhaps get around IC as people are only buying their own work back?
just a thought - used them for a catalogue at work and the quality is really good.
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Dec 22 2009, 12:15 PM|
|I've considered some publishing options, but I think it would be safer to steer well clear of any money changing hands at all. We will always have it available for free online, and occasionally printed copies will be given away too.|
|Posted by: renlegunvrs Dec 22 2009, 11:03 PM|
| almost done mine. going to revamp it a bit before i send it in.
cant wait to see every ones work.
|Posted by: Yvraith Dec 22 2009, 11:16 PM|
| So just how many Iron Warriors entries did we end up with?
If there's enough we could do our own Iron Warriors short story anthology!
I look forward to reading everyone's entries.
|Posted by: ahriman Dec 23 2009, 12:50 AM|
|Hey, just wondering if you received my entry Shroudfilm? just wondering whether msn's rubbish or your busy and id rather not miss another Great Crusade deadline.|

Hope you get it Shroud!
Looking forward to reading everyone's work.

| Shroud must be swamped at the mo.
He's not cleared his PM inbox, nor updated the list of received entries in the first post.
Either that or he needs to get the lead out!
|Posted by: Marshall Wilhelm Dec 27 2009, 01:17 AM|
| I sent my entry, "Here instead" on Thursday the 24th of December.
I just thought to 'put it out there' as Shroudfilm has not yet responded yet and I wanted to cover myself, just in case.
Naturally, being tapped into the 'greater consciousness', I have written about IWs....
|Posted by: renlegunvrs Dec 28 2009, 12:58 AM|

finally thought of a name "Caduceus in the dark"
hmm wait maybe "Dark Caduceus" would have been better?
oh well anyway its in so all is good. cant wait to read every ones stuff but unfortunately i ship out for 2 months so it will have to wait till march. oh well guess it will have to wait.
good luck to everyone

|Just sent mine in! It may or may not contain Iron Warriors, but an awful title is guaranteed.|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Dec 28 2009, 07:18 PM|
|I'm not in the studio yet but I will grab everyone's entries from my email before the deadline!|
|Posted by: IngoPech Dec 31 2009, 04:14 AM|
| Submitted mine earlier today
|Posted by: Fingol23 Dec 31 2009, 06:32 PM|
|Just submitted mine, nothing like cutting it tight. Its called a Knife in the Dark.|
|Posted by: Benedict Arnold Dec 31 2009, 10:14 PM|
|Hahaha, ok. Sent! Duskraider Till Dawn, the world's quickest written and shortest entry is in.|
|Posted by: eFTy Jan 1 2010, 11:56 AM|
|I registered so I could participate in this but didn't manage to complete anything. Can anyone link me to the previous contest's entries if they're still available on the web, though?|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Jan 1 2010, 10:38 PM|
| Hey all - entries have been received and are being compiled now. The list will be updated and you can make sure I've got your details right then.
Efty - all 2008 entries available here, and also as a PDF download:
Great work guys!
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Jan 4 2010, 04:46 PM|
| Ok guys, a full list of all 21 entries received before the deadline is now up at the end of the first post. If you believe you should be on that list and are not, please email me or reply ASAP.
Titus Pullo and Argent, you need to get your titles to me ASAP!
Provost Dylanof, I need your full name!
The entries will be sent to Nick once we have these details sorted.
|Posted by: Fulgrim Jan 4 2010, 05:38 PM|
|Out of interest Shroud, how many will make it into the compilation? Is there a set amount or will all make it if judged worthy by Nick?|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Jan 4 2010, 05:49 PM|
| All will be included in the compilation, but the overall winner will be chosen by Nick.
All stories will be submitted for judging as-is, but some may receive slight edits before going into the compilation, same as last time - this is just to give balance to the compilation as a whole, make sure we don't concentrate too much on one legion or event etc, if lots of people wrote about it.

|I'm sad I didn't get around to entering this year. But looking forward to reading those which were submitted!|
|Posted by: Gagoc TheAncient Jan 4 2010, 11:26 PM|
|Something seems to have gone wrong with my entry.|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Jan 4 2010, 11:41 PM|
|When did you send it? And from what email address? PM me details.|
|Posted by: Pacific Jan 4 2010, 11:50 PM|
I'm so sorry Gagoc, but I pictured you saying this with the smashed remains of a keyboard in your hands, and surrounded by wreckage for miles around as though you're in London during the Blitz
|Posted by: Gagoc TheAncient Jan 5 2010, 12:38 AM|
And where did the rest of the craft land? Or should that be what did it land on?
Actually what I first pictured when I read your post was an Astartes stood next to me with his boltpistol pointed at my head asking,
"Where's the story you wrote about me? And why haven't they got it?"
Do you think I should point him in Shrouds direction?
|Posted by: Yvraith Jan 5 2010, 11:03 AM|
| So does that mean that all of the Iron Warrior entries are going to have to draw lots?
Gagoc It couldn't hurt.
|Posted by: Fulgrim Jan 5 2010, 06:49 PM|
| Could be interesting Gagoc...
But anyways, good luck to everyone.
|Posted by: RandomX Jan 5 2010, 08:34 PM|
| I am looking forward to reading all the other entries! Want to see what all the fuss is about with all of the Iron Warriors stories that seemed to have been sent in.
|Posted by: Gagoc TheAncient Jan 7 2010, 12:24 AM|
| I will have to make a suitable sacrifice to the Omnissiah as first, the boltpistol jammed and second, Shroud finally got my entry!
Praise the Omnissiah!
Here's a clue to my story's theme.
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Jan 7 2010, 01:12 AM|
|That's right folks, Gagoc wrote a story about Photoshop!|
|Posted by: Yvraith Jan 7 2010, 11:02 AM|
|And here I was thinking it was going to be a 30k version of Ben-Hur.|
|Posted by: Arden Fell Jan 7 2010, 12:10 PM|
|I don't know if I could read an entire story in black and white. I think i'd need a bit of colour in there. I mean grey blood is a bit boring.|
|Posted by: Benedict Arnold Jan 7 2010, 02:26 PM|
|Shroud, any chance of a list of Legion's used? I'm curious.|
|Posted by: Vinnie Jan 7 2010, 03:37 PM|
I lol'd. Hard.
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Jan 7 2010, 04:48 PM|
|I've not yet read them all... but yes, I will post a list.|
|Posted by: Battle Brother Loken Jan 8 2010, 12:24 AM|
|I missed it|
|Posted by: Cyrox Jan 12 2010, 08:48 PM|

|Posted by: Provost Dylanof Jan 13 2010, 10:21 PM|
|Any idea when Nick Kyme will read the stories?|
|Posted by: Hero of Istvaan Jan 13 2010, 10:38 PM|
|ive met nick befor, really nice bloke, he was doing a book signing for 'salamander' in GW Uxbridge i was in there peddling the Gedren Prime event and he didnt mention he knew about the forum at all, though he probobly new more about it than i did at the time!! lol|
|Posted by: Yvraith Jan 14 2010, 12:07 AM|
Considering we had 3 whole months to get a short story written up, sorry no sympathy from me.
I can't understand how you can say "I missed it"
|Posted by: Battle Brother Loken Jan 14 2010, 12:56 AM|
High school and College kinda ruined my day and my story was done like a hour before the deadline or so i thought but then it turns out it was the deadline in my time which meant it was way over the deadline in your fellows lovely land
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Jan 14 2010, 01:01 AM|
| PD - the stories are with him now. I saw him at GWHQ yesterday while I was filming, and chatted briefly about it.
HOI - he may not have known about Gedren back then, depends how long ago we're talking...?
BBL - post it up in the Members Articles section - I'd love to read it anyway!
|Posted by: Hero of Istvaan Jan 14 2010, 09:50 AM|
|it was about 2weeks befor shroud|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Jan 14 2010, 02:46 PM|
|Yes then, I think at that point only Graham and Dan knew about it, and our agent at BL.|
|Posted by: KRUG_666 Jan 19 2010, 07:34 AM|
| Another contest I missed out on due to family commitments.
I started the piece but never finished is their a place to post any ways???
|Posted by: Provost Dylanof Jan 22 2010, 11:23 PM|
|I saw last year's entries. Really liked the "skulls for the golden throne". It's nice to know when a galaxy wide chant began. Is that official background or did someone invent it?|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Jan 23 2010, 02:33 PM|
| As far as I know, I came up with the line "Blood for the Primarch, Skulls for the Golden Throne" and I used it as my signature image on the old boards (back in 2007??)
However, quite a few other people have also claimed to have come up with it too... so I'm willing to believe that it's not entirely original!
"Skulls for the Emperor" is another popular one.
|Posted by: Fulgrim Jan 28 2010, 04:51 PM|
|Any word from Nick yet?|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Jan 28 2010, 05:03 PM|
| Not yet - he isn't in the BL office at the moment.
Krug - thought I already replied to you... please do post it in the Member's Articles section as a new thread! I'd love to see it.

| Guys... after much deliberation, the results are in!
Nick has written a full introduction to the next anthology for us, but for now I will hand over to him to let us know the results of the contest:
It seems like the Horus Heresy series has been around for almost as long as the ten thousand years that separates it from the ‘modern’ age of the 41st millennium. The legions of fans (pun intended) have grown exponentially since the inception of the novels: a loyal army of devotees that has seen its many volumes ride high, and even top, the best-seller science fiction charts.
The thing to remember about 'Warhammer 30K' is that it’s actually a period of hope and pre-eminence for mankind. The Emperor with his Legions of Adeptus Astartes, ably commanded by his eighteen remaining sons, has a grand plan – to lift humanity from the darkness, from oppression and bring them back into the light. Unlike the 41st millennium, technology is at its apex and the secrets which will be lost during the later conflicts are still around. It’s cleaner, and it’s a better world, where ordinary men and women can have meaningful lives and contribute more than just being a cog in the machinery of eternal war... but it’s also foreshadowed by the disastrous conflict that is going to tear it apart and set the galaxy in flames.
There’s a certain attraction, I think, about telling a story (or elements of it) where you, and your reader, already know the ending. It’s almost as if the ending isn’t important (or, rather knowing the ending) but rather it’s the journey taken to get there that provides all the mystique and high drama. You can play tricks with preconception, monkey with established ‘facts’ and generally have a great time working out the ‘hows’ as well as the ‘whys’.
Let’s face it: we all want to see the final battle for Terra. We all want to bear witness to the siege of the Emperor’s palace and watch as two godlike figures go toe-to-toe for the fate of mankind. It’s this epic denouement, the foreknowledge of its occurrence that makes the journey so compelling in the first place. But we’re not there yet. There’s a lot more fun to be had along the way and judging by the quality of submissions for this contest, you, our loyal legions of The Great Crusade, seem to think so too.
As an overall comment, I have to say I was staggered by the sheer variety and imagination expressed in these selected stories. Let’s make it clear from the outset, writing a really short story (I’m talking 1,000-2,000 words) is no mean feat. The fact that all the entries in this contest have achieved that is tremendous. That said, there are always those that managed to rise to the top of the pile, chainswords whirring…
Honourable mentions should by rights go to all the stories, which possessed good pacing, control and tone throughout. The writing you guys have produced is a great body of work and you should all be rightly proud of it! For me though, these particular entries really are something special:
In third place, A Knife in the Dark takes established characters and does a great job of characterising them. The overall treatment was great and had a neat little final revelation. Good stuff!
Second, Airlocked deals with the oft-avoided subject of life in the Imperial Fleet and really benefits from some nice expression and a cool twist at the end.
But the overall winner has to be Unity, a tale of ‘liberation’ fighters on Terra who have sided with the Warmaster. It was a great little story with a viciously wicked twist and some nice, subtle touches. Outstanding work.
As an editor and writer, it is so gratifying to see the enthusiasm for the Horus Heresy series in this form among the members of The Great Crusade community. One thing is for certain: the galaxy is burning and everyone out there is quite happy to fan the flames...
- Nick Kyme
So there we have it! Our winner is IngoPech AKA Chris Eustace, and well-earned congratulations are due - I'm sure you'll all join me in praising his excellent piece of writing.
In accordance with the outline of the contest, the next volume of short fiction will be titled 'Tales from the Great Crusade' Vol 2 - Unity' and will be available for download once formatting is complete.
Congratulation also go to Argent AKA C. Alice Clayton, and Fingol23 AKA Andrew Green who came in as close runners up! Well done to you both!
Finally, everyone who entered gets a hearty thank you from the TGC team and we hope you all had as much fun writing the entries and we (and Nick!) had in reading them.
Can IngoPech, Argent and Fingol23 please PM/email me, and we'll sort you out some prizes from Black Library! Also, everyone please check the posted edited versions of the stories so that we can begin to finalise the anthology for release.
The contest will run again after the summer, so check back for more info as we get it. We will also have news of our next regular forum contest very soon, so you can all break out your paints and brushes again in the meantime...!
Once again, MANY thanks to Nick Kyme for taking on the tough role of celebrity judge, and congratulations to IngoPech for being our PH fiction champion of 2009!
|Posted by: Yvraith Mar 1 2010, 11:06 PM|
| Congratulations to IngoPech, Argent & Fingol23 for being the top 3.
Also congrats go to everyone else who entered, I really enjoyed reading through all of your entries and your view of events in the era.
I look forward to our 3rd comp on this, and reading everyone's entries for that as well.
|Posted by: ahriman Mar 1 2010, 11:12 PM|
|Well done you three, as well as to everyone else who enters, but tbh, i think we're all winners her (thats only so i can count myself a winner as well)|
|Posted by: ShroudFilm Mar 1 2010, 11:14 PM|
|We had some amazing entries, and what I personally enjoyed was seeing the progression from last year's comp in those who entered both years. Very cool.|
|Posted by: eFTy Mar 1 2010, 11:38 PM|
| Yes, congratulations! Both to the winners and to everyone else who took part, there were a lot of massive stories in this contest, it was great reading them all.
And not least of all thanks to everyone who busted their asses to make this thing happen!
|Posted by: Benedict Arnold Mar 1 2010, 11:42 PM|
|Nicely done gentlemen, and a big thanks to Nick as well for taking the time and effort to assist. Also, props to you too Shroud for making the contest work and for all you do here.|
|Posted by: Vinnie Mar 2 2010, 02:06 AM|
| Big ups to all the guys who entered, IngoPech not the least. Argent and Fingol also deserve (and have from me) big respect as well. -big thumbs up-
Cheers to Nick for the very cool intro, and the hard task of judging, and last but by no means least to Laurie, for making the whole thing as cool to enter as it is... and it really was!
Already looking forward to the next one hugely... xD
|Posted by: lord_caldera Mar 2 2010, 02:51 AM|
|Awesome job everyone, I was excited every morning to read the next story, and the only thing that disappointed me was having to wait a whole day for Shroud to post another! Congratulations IngoPech, Argent and Fingol23 for taking the prize, thank you to Nick Kyme for taking the time to judge, and a big thanks to Laurie for running this agian! Now I got to get my creative juices flowing again to write a masterpiece for the next one...|
|Posted by: Provost Dylanof Mar 2 2010, 03:53 AM|
| Congrats Ingopech, excellent job.
I'm also particularly fond of Airlocked. Very vivid.
|Posted by: Arden Fell Mar 2 2010, 12:58 PM|
| Agree with all that's been said above.
Outstanding quality through-out (with the exception of one ), a worthy winner and a big thanks to Nick for the amount of time he must have put into this.
Shroud too of course but then 'does he have anything better to do with his time?' I think not.
By the way, what becomes of the Anthology? Does this now become lore, or does it still remain excellent fluff?
Anyway better start work on next years entry now. I have a lot of ground to make up....
|Posted by: Fulgrim Mar 3 2010, 07:24 AM|
|Congrats guys, excellent work.|
|Posted by: Dargor Mar 3 2010, 08:37 AM|
|Congrats to the winners, and everyone else for that matter. All entries were awersome,i can believe Nick when he said he has a hard time choosing the 3 best.Well done guys!|
|Posted by: Fingol23 Mar 4 2010, 08:11 PM|
| A big thank you to Shroudfilm for organizing this and Nick for judging it.
Congratulations to IngoPech and Argent for their well deserved 1st and 2nd places. Also congratulations to everyone else who entered I think all the stories are worthy of being held as a part of the Horus Heresy series and were a real pleasure to read.
I'm really looking forward to the next one, Ingo and Argent you better watch out, as had I by the look of it . To sum up I'm glad I spent two hours on New Years eve writing a bit of 30k fiction.
|Posted by: Brother Handro Mar 4 2010, 08:36 PM|
| Big congratulations to our three winners, to Shroud for his hard work and to Mr. Kyme for judging. Lord knows I wouldn't have been able to!
Can't wait for the next one!
|Posted by: IngoPech Mar 5 2010, 11:40 PM|
I'm honestly floored.
Thanks everyone, especially 'Shroud for organizing round 2 and to Nick Kyme for taking time out of his no doubt ludicrous schedule to judge our competition!
I had a blast reading everyone's work as it was posted and I really didn't envy Nick his task. I'll be looking forward with great anticipation to the next round (hopefully). There's still an awful lot of galaxy left to conquer!
|Posted by: Mortarion Mar 6 2010, 02:26 PM|
|Congrats guys. Definately dont envy Nick having to pick winners! Roll on round 3.|
|Posted by: Fingol23 Mar 18 2010, 05:30 PM|

In other news I have already got an idea for the next competion

I keep meaning to submit a literary piece but I get so involved in arty things that I never get round to it.
Be fun to see another arty competition next
