Index: Astartes shows a picture of a PH Blood Angel with regular tactical squad markings, and the post-heresy version with the standard blood drop.

Did PH BA use codex-style markings?

We don't know, the artwork suggests both might have been in use.

Impression Ive got is that the codex united (most) of the legions and subsequently chapters into one uniform use fo identification, but these may have been in use elsewhere beforehand by different legions already.

Lets face it, Guilliman was probably already using this system for his own Astartes

The Pre-heresy BA do indeed seem to have used the 'standard' Codex markings, at least to an extent... there are examples of the current Tactical and Assault markings in Collected Visions, and the coloured helmet system does not seem to have been in use either (although gold helmets for veterans still seem to have been used, at least occasionally). You can find a more detailed summary here. In general I would probably use 'standard' codex markings for Assault, Tactical and Veteran squads, with Veterans using gold helmets and blood drop insignia.

I could imagine there being variations in the marking and such. The Blood Angels, according to Jim Swallow's Fear to Tread consists of about 120k Marines, divided into 300 companies.
