Not sure if ever covered or mentioned but the Leman Russ tank is a PH tank.
Was there another name it went by or was it named after him while he was still alive?

Probably whilst he was still alive.
It is possible, but unlikely, that it was the SW Legion that found the STC and named it in honour of their Primarch.

Although, now I come to think of it could the two have been named independently of each other?

I thought the name came from when Leman Russ was a guard general before GW invented the Primarchs.

Right, but now that that old fluff was changed, the question is where the name came from in the current continuity.

Maybe a nickname that sticks?

i'm fairly certain that in the book Mechanicum, there's a factory which is mentioned where tanks were made, and the Leman Russ was named as being produced there or something like that. i'm pretty sure it's mentioned by name at least...

You are indeed correct, here is the quote

“At Sinus Sabaeus, the continent-sized assembly lines of Leman Russ battle tanks ground to a halt, and machines that had run without interruption for over a century seized up, never to operate again.”
