I found an alternative inspired by (BigWill?)'s hobby balls. I found some 'liquid balls' that are tiny plastic spheres and did the pin vice + glue trick with them. Preparing a tutorial later!

My friend, Wiggy, pointed out a simply way of making greenstuff studs.

Look at this picture and spot the ready-made stud mould biggrin.gif

I make studded shoulders with flat pin "heads". I drill holes in the shoulder and glue the heads. Looks very nice when you cut a little around the drilled hole.

Just been to the new Hobbycraft in Union Square Mall (worst shopping centre ever by the way sad.gif ) and bought some liquid glue balls for £3.49.

My rivets arrived earlier this week so this weekend I will do a comparison of the two methods. But I'm guessing so long as the glue balls don't dry out it's gonna be very one sided on the price test.

Also I can see why you'd try and use the holes in the back pack to make rivets but surely getting them stuck in the holes and faffing with lubing the pack would make it the most frostrating way of doing it. At least if you use an old bit of sprue you aren't wasting a detailed piece.

Well I'd use a big lump of greenstuff so its all connected, then slice off the studs once dry.

I've sourced some even smaller beads to try next. Some areas need a finer ball wink.gif

I prefer using small discs cut from fine-gauge plastic rod. Use a pin to pick them up and dip them in some precision poly cement, then place them where you want. The main advantages are you can adjust the position as you place them and you can then file them for a uniform appearance.

Rod is great for flat-head rivets, but I prefer the curves on these balls for doing studs on marine armour.

Check out my new tiny balls smile.gif

Wow, from the depths it came! smile.gif

Quite sad (or makes me nostalgic at least!) reading this thread and seeing comments that are 4 years old, and some of the members who have been lost (honoured heroes, victims of the Great Crusade, their names shall be remembered! biggrin.gif ) over the years. Sadly Whitehorn hasn't posted here for some time so probably won't see your comment Dogmeat.

I guess perhaps some kind of conclusion is in order, for anyone wanting to add studs?

After much dabbling with the various methods, I finalised on BigWill's used in the first post on this thread.

You can still get the rivets from Anteoniciti's workshop, if you are based in the UK.

I made an article with instructions for making the armour on my blog: MK5 Armour tutorial

A couple of examples:

I will say though that the tutorial was made before Forge World released their own Mk5 armour, and there was no other way to represent it. It is a lot of work drilling all of those holes, and adding the studs. You will have to weigh up the cost of those FW official mk5 models (which are rather expensive), against the time it will take to add studs in any kind of quantity. And also the teeth-gnashing frustration of dropping and losing many rivets!

Just so you know I only use the drill studs on little men.
Vehicles and Terrain get .040 plastic rod.
