The main reason I identified that helmet as a Mk IV variant was mainly because of the piping from the 'earphones' to beneath the faceplate at each side.

You don't find those on a Mk II or Mk III. They do sometimes have something similar, but they have them going beneath the helmet. I know of but one example.

Occasionally, with the plastic versions, you do find such tubing on a Mk III, but then it is found on one side or the other of the helmet and not on both.

Add the sloped vents on the face plate, as well as the two eyepieces, and it resembles Mk IV helmets from Collected Visions as well as two of the early models.

First two on the left.

I'm finding more and more that it is such small but characteristic details that help identify a particular form, pattern or mark of helmet.
But it only really works if you look at the piece of armour as a whole.
