Nothing like a looming deadline (Adepticon in April!) to FINALLY motivate me enough to get painting... Not many pictures yet, but squad #1 is almost ready - just a Leviathan Purple wash on the blue armor parts away from complete. Well, that and painting the bottoms of the bases black. And maybe hitting them with another coat of black wash. And make a few touch-ups here and there... Ugh! More pictures to come!

Excellent, simply love the embossed Chained-Alphas. May I ask how you did the drum magazines?

I honestly can't quite remember! I made one up and then cast a bunch, but that was so long ago, though I want to say that the drum bit from an Ork gun? This project has been on the back burner for me for a long, long time. The Alpha Legion is by far my favorite Marine force, and I wanted to do them justice. These are the first miniatures I've painted since 40K 2nd edition. So, first minis in close to 15+ years? Biggest lesson I learned between circa 1995 and now was to thin my paints!

I'll be using them in the 40K Team Tournament on Saturday, if anyone is at Adepticon in Chicago stop by and say hello! My team (Dakka Detachment 3) will be in these shirts: And as the team captain, I'll have the variant shirt with this on the back: Team Banner: We had a team member pull out due to a family emergency. He was playing a Custodes (counts as Grey Knights) army, and we were setting everything during the events of "Deliverance Lost". So, change in plans! We've now set our theme as Pre-Heresy, Pre-Istvaan, with the Alpha Legion pulling the strings on a mixed force of Raven Guard, Blood Angels and Imperial Army: | QUOTE | Located on the southern edge of the Ultima Segmentum, the Calvor system was brought to compliance 3 years ago with relatively little resistance, and the feral world of Calvor Prime adjusted well to its new role in the Empire of Mankind. Technology and knowledge made life on the hostile planet more comfortable, and the environment produced hardy soldiers willing to fight for their new Emperor. But 4 months ago all communication from Calvor Prime suddenly stopped, and now the planet's orbit is filled with Imperial ships. The first regiment of the Imperial Army arrived about a month ago to investigate why contact with the planet was lost. The planetary defenses greeted them with fire and the Army was unable to establish an effective landing site. With the encouragement of his new advisor, the regimental commander ordered his astropath to send a message to the Warmaster to ask for reinforcements.
The commander was surprised when the orbit around Calvor Prime filled with ships from 3 separate legions. The Blood Angels, previously ordered to the Signus Cluster by Horus, were ordered to send a company to support the efforts to bring Calvor Prime back under compliance. A company of the Raven Guard was also dispatched to the system to assist with reconnaissance behind enemy lines. The most surprising reinforcements were the ships from the Alpha Legion. The regimental commander knew little of the Legion, but most people knew that they preferred to work alone. Even in orbit, communications were minimal and the ships of the Legion remained separate from the remainder of the fleet.
On the surface of the planet, Sergeant Miles Fortis' patrol is positioned on the edge of the jungle awaiting orders. The patrol left the base when the harsh sun started to rise, reaching their assigned coordinates shortly before noon. He did not know who or what he was waiting for, his only orders instructing him to reach this clearing and to stand by for new orders. A sudden noise causes him to turn around, just in time to witness one of the monstrous creatures still roaming the jungle killing one of his soldiers. The las-fire from the other soldiers only leaves small burn marks on its scaly skin as it looks up and focuses on Sgt. Fortis. Whatever it is, it seems to recognize him as the leader of his squad and starts to run towards him. He watches the fire from his las-pistol bounce off the creature's head as he is staring into its wild eyes only a few feet from his own.
Those eyes are the last thing he sees before the creature's head explodes and the now limp carcass misses him by mere inches... A noise from behind causes him to turn around, expecting another one of these monsters, the sun in the sky blinding his vision. As his vision adjusts he is able to see a human shape step out of the tall grass surrounding the jungle, the blue armor changing colors as it reflects the sunlight, smoke rising from the boltgun in his hand. “Astartes...”, the only word escaping his mouth. The space marine stops a few steps short of Sgt. Fortis and begins to speak. “I am Alpharius.” As the armored warrior stands still, Sgt. Fortis notices more footsteps on either side of him. Another Astartes warrior steps out of the jungle to his left, clad in red armor, “I am Alpharius.” A third warrior clad in onyx black armor appears to his right, “I am Alpharius.” Miles feels the sweat running down his face as the trio of warriors turn their gazes towards him... |
The story is perhaps a bit too "Gav", but we had to come with something short notice that kind of explains why the Alpha Legion, Blood Angels, Raven Guard and Imperial Army are all hanging out together...
Anyway, it should be fun!

My team won "Best Hybrid Army" for the 40K Team Tournament (Theme and Presentation only)! Adepticon is a lot of fun, but also very tiring - it is a loooong weekend of 40K and other games, meeting lots of people, staying up late, and getting up early! Still, all worth it!
