Title: Colour schemes
Description: Preferances?

I've been contemplating my forthcoming TS's, and the question of colour scheme has reared its head.

In the Collected Visions, we see both gold and silver trim versions of TS marines. The IA article suggests silver is the corect scheme, but the look of the gold version is equally pleasing.

So, as I'm undecided at the moment, I thought I'd throw the question out there to see what the general feeling is towards the TS's.

So, gold or silver?

I'll add that one option I'm considering is using silver for normal troopers and gold for elites...

I'd say gold personally - its a warm colour like red and so will compliment it better in my opinion. I also think gold fits into the Thousand Sons imagery better than silver as I could see silver being too bright and detracting from the rest of the model.

Actually, I think I prefer silver. A cooler crimson red would set off silver very nicely, and silver is a traditionally 'magical' colour (of coure, the same could be said of gold in alchemical terms, but meh).

Crimson and silver could be very striking, and would work better with an ice blue or emerald green accent colour.

Of course, there's room for both gold for the rank and file, and silver for sorcerors/veterans/officers/specialists etc.

There's also white to consider...

If I were to do it, I'd go with silver for normal troopers, white for librarians' bodyguards and gold for the librarians themselves. That's just , my opinion though...

Maybe they have different trim for different companies?

Personally I prefer gold or yellow.

Ooh ooh ooh. What he said, what he said!

Liking the idea - havent seen the white trim anywhere, is that on the ccg artwork as well?

Incidentally, if I do the silver, I see it as more of a boltgun metal colour rather than bright Mithril or Chainmail.

I think gold goes more with the whole "egyptian" theme but whatever you think works for you

White trim turns up in the artwork quite regularly - often combined with gold detailing such as here:

I'd have said white trims are more common than silver in the artwork myself, and personally I think the trim in the IA looks white as well. Gold does tend to get used far more often though.

I'm not sure about silver rims, I think white would look much better. A mix of white rims and gold rims would be my suggestion. When I get round to doing mine I think I will go with white rims for standard marines, with gold rims for characters and vetarans. But you could use Weiss' suggestions as well. To be honest I'd be inclined to go with two colours, one for standard marines and one for elites and characters. More than that and you run the risk of it looking a bit random..

You tend to see the silver on certain types of squad. There's a pic in Collected Visions (P37) showing A TS Devastator squad with silver trim. Even the sergeants Mk3 style helmet has asilver faceplate.

But then there are also pictures of Devastator Squads with White trim (Squad Hasani). There don't appear to be any hard and fast rules - tactical squads are represented with white, silver or gold trims in different bits of artwork for example.

Well that either means that the artists were using the three colours to distinguish between different forms of squad (normal, veteran, specialist / command / bodyguards), or they had the usual amount of consistency for the vision of this body of work, namely little or none.

I'm inclined to think thats probably the case.

Anyway, having scoured the Collected Visions I found those white-trimmed TS's, although to be honest I'm not too keen on the colour.

I think my best angle will be to knock up two TS's once my latest ebay purchases arrive and paint one gold, one silver, and see which I prefer then. Right now I'm leaning toward gold I think.

Anodyr; I've done something similar and painted a TS with all gold trim, one with white trim and a metallic faceplate, and one with silver trim and faceplate but with white trim on the shoulder pads.
They're in the visual codex thread.

I'm just working on my first PH Thousand Sons Marine, and have opted for the silver trim

Uzthizzar, Librarian-Sorceror - February 26, 2009 07:31 PM (GMT)
I read somewhere that the armour plates were red and that the shoulder trim was gold for normal troops (including librarians), but white for veterans.

ShroudFilm - February 26, 2009 08:17 PM (GMT)
I like how the TS consider Librarians to be "normal"... :D

Uzthizzar, Librarian-Sorceror - March 1, 2009 03:25 PM (GMT)
Yeah..well...

Probably was normal for the TS Legion ecause most of them had developed psychic mutancies/ mutations or whatever..
