Title: The Hrud Project
Description: Space rats... in SPACE!

evilamericorp - March 13, 2008 12:11 AM (GMT)
So, continued from this thread, here are the humble beginnings of what will hopefully soon be a vast Hrud army.

I will be playing them using Eldar rules to represent their natural talents, and hopefully this will not only be a cool army on the tabletop, but able to hold its own in tournaments. It will consist primarily of the stealthy Hrud Fusiliers (pathfinders), supported by Warp Tunnelers (warp spiders), Heavy Warp Plasma Launchers (fire prisms), and all controlled by the mighty Brood Overseer (farseer on jetbike).

I've already established how I want the army to look, and have the models mostly all built now, and I'll continue to post pics as I get stuff finished. As I said before, I'm trying to finish this army to take to Adepticon in April, so every free moment I have between now and then will be spent painting furiously.

Here's what I have so far, which, apart from some minor detailing and a clearcoat, is done.

Do you think you can give us a parts list? For those of us that might want to make some.

These are just Skaven Plague Monks with Kroot arms and weapons. An extremely simple conversion to do, with a little GS work to reposition the arms. The other models in the army are a little more complicated, but I'll talk about those when I finish them and post pics.

This is total awesomeness! I absolutely love Hrud to bits :P

Do you game with them at all?

I will as soon as the army is done. I might even get one or two practice games in before i'm off to adepticon.

Can we get some backstory on them?
All I know is the Hrud are supposed to be ratlike and are really well equipped.

The best article on them online is linked in my original post. Basically, GW hasn't put out much info on them, and what is out is very contradictory. I based their look off the pic below, from the 3rd ed. rulebook, and most of their ability fluff, from the book "Xenos", consists of them being extremely flexible, emitting natural stealth fields, and having high technology.

Unknown, c'mon, is it that hard to tell what a Necron is?

Horn - March 13, 2008 09:03 AM (GMT)
Very cool, inspired work there :)

Angron - March 13, 2008 09:05 AM (GMT)
Lovely models mate :P
Not to be a party poper but you havent read Index Xenos now have you? The Hrud are more like the creature from the black lagoon with spines for bones inte both legs and arms...

Torg - March 13, 2008 09:31 AM (GMT)
I think those are fine Hrud! :D At least you may have been the first person
to make them(At least that I know!).Very awesome! Can't wait to see more! :)

That's the point... no one in M41 really knows anything about them except for the Eldar and the AdMech. Average Joe Imperium doesn't know jack about Necrons until they gauss-flay him to death.

Yeah, there's been all kinds of fluff written for them, like in xenology, where they have slime-covered exoskeletons (like geigeresque aliens) and they decompose as soon as they die, but I went with an old-school look to represet the original concept of skaven in space.

ShroudFilm - March 13, 2008 05:48 PM (GMT)
A party poper? You turn up with a bottle of wine and kiss the floor? :D

I love the models, I'd like to see more people trying something new and non-GW too. My Megarachnids are on hold until I can find some suitably large bases...

EDIT: I just thought, if you wanted to keep the current appearance (which I do like!) but go closer to the artwork, maybe remove the snouts and have just an open empty hood?

VESPASIAN - March 13, 2008 07:00 PM (GMT)
Evilamericorp:

Please, please, please do not listen to Shroudfilm!

Those miniatures are extremely nice and do not need any cutting to fit in with the artwork of the Hrud.

There are actually official concept sketches for the Hrud which were drawn by Jes Goodwin. These can be found in The Gothic and the Eldritch: The Collected Concept sketches of Jes Goodwin. Needless to say their snouts are not hidden, with some wearing gasmasks.

My warp tunnelers have gas mask/helmet things on, so that works nicely.

VESPASIAN - March 13, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
Sounds excellent! Any chance of more photos of these miniatures?

Angron - March 13, 2008 08:39 PM (GMT)
Hmm poper... My spellings at it yet again.

Sorry Angron. Your request regarding the Gothic and Edritch book is illegal and an IP infringement therefore I have removed it. Vespasian. Its impossible to get a hold of (at least for a poor woodsman from the middle of nowhere like me)

And dont listen to us about changing them, their your interpritation of the hrud and at least I tend to be a bit of a nag when it comes to whats "right" or not.

The Hrud rules by the whay, would be nice to make some of em. Hmm....

ShroudFilm - March 13, 2008 09:27 PM (GMT)
Wow, I'd love to see the other artwork... if only there were pictures posted online somewhere which were nothing to do with this forum...

Vespasian, what year was the Jes Goodwin stuff published? Is it fairly recent?

What rules are you planning to use for them? Are you going to write your own rules, or use an existing ruleset/codex? I know someone used the Eldar Codex, back in 3rd edition..

Yup, they're gonna be Eldar for now. Might try my hand at codex creation eventually, or bother the BolS guys till they write one.

Here's more recent fluff pics from Xenology:

Something in between those goofy arms and rat faces would be allot cooler imo (for gws part that is)
As for army list, the Kroot one perhaps?

Sillybugger - March 16, 2008 08:52 AM (GMT)
ok one thing on those pics. WHAT IN THE WARP is that goowy piece of xeno. Its like if nids and orks could have babies. Anyway nice models btw.

BigWill - March 16, 2008 03:18 PM (GMT)
I like the idea of Hrud being space-skaven myself.
I think GW went the Swamp-Thing route when they wanted to get away from the idea that Wh40k and WFB were in the same continuity(WFB a world in the EoT)
EAC I'd like to see more I like what I see so far

I may do a jellyfish army myself someday :P

evilamericorp - March 17, 2008 02:06 AM (GMT)
Here is my Brood Overseer, LORD RATTUS! (counts as Farseer on jetbike)

Cool concept!
More pics as force develops would be great.

Angron - March 17, 2008 09:07 AM (GMT)
That guys just discusting, I love it :P

Lion El' Jonson - March 17, 2008 11:55 AM (GMT)
Thats quite a disturbing model there  Where did you get the idea for it?

Vredesbyrd - March 17, 2008 11:56 AM (GMT)
He's like a gigantic obese Naked Mole Rat. I love it, thorughly alien yet disturbingly human with that skin tone...

Angron - March 17, 2008 12:41 PM (GMT)
That was what I thought of when I saw it. Just couldnt put my finger on it.
Dang you Vred now I have to play some Fallout. War, war never changes....

Weiss - March 17, 2008 12:59 PM (GMT)
 Love that game. Have yet to complete it though (it's on my list though, along with F2 and Tactics... <_< )

The rat looks amazing man, I like the paintjob you've done. Personally I'd have cut off the "spinal column" from the back of the destroyer body. Is it supposed to slot into something else though?

Magos Explorator - March 17, 2008 01:37 PM (GMT)
Great stuff! :)

VESPASIAN - March 17, 2008 02:00 PM (GMT)
A superb and truly haunting miniature!

It reminds me immensely of the bloated, mutated leader rats which feature in James Herbert's 'The Rats' quadrology!

I'm already feeling the urge to read them all again; as well as the urge to get myself a Slann miniature!

Fantastic work, I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your work!

You can't see it well in the pics, but the spine merges into his back about halfway up.

As for the Idea, there is a link at the bottom of the post to someone else's vary similar Hrud leader, but I took mine in a different direction, and yes, I did get some inspiration from the talking mole rat from the nuclear plant in Fallout 2.

I have this evening and tomorrow off work, so i'm gonna try to get my squad of warp spider equivalents painted up.

Weiss - March 17, 2008 02:29 PM (GMT)
I saw the column go in, I would personally have cut the other end off/added some kind of device is all.

ShroudFilm - March 17, 2008 04:20 PM (GMT)
Ewwww... reminds me of the Sandmirk Queen (sp?) from Flight of Dragons...

Very cool, keep those pics coming!

Angron - March 22, 2008 06:56 AM (GMT)
Any updates? The more I look at these the more I like the space rats...

(Got trough Fallout I and II now so Ive begun on tactics yet again.)

evilamericorp - March 22, 2008 04:33 PM (GMT)
Well heck. I got another squad done last night, but my camera's battery is dead now. It's recharging, pics in a little while.

evilamericorp - March 22, 2008 06:38 PM (GMT)
Here are my Warp Tunnelers. Painting my first tank up next.
