Title: Oh dear, yet another Sons of Horus army!

Hi guys,

well it's been a good 5 years since I last did a pre-heresy army on here, but I have been bitten by the bug again!
A good dozen or so people are doing a tale of X gamers type event for pre heresy armies leading up to a big campaign weekend next year, so I'm ramping up to do a Sons of Horus army.

While I wait for my forgeworld to arrive, I've been agonising over colour choices. Sons of Horus green seems to be quite contentious. Every time it's drawn it seems to be a different colour, ranging from the very very dark in the Betrayal book, to the almost white in the index astartes.

The other big thing for me is I absolutely love my airbrush, but want to do these squads on a unit by unit basis. This means that I should avoid the base colour itself being a mix, otherwise im likely to have a variety of shades and leave the army looking disjointed.

I threw together a quick test model, but am a bit worried its a bit too heavy on the dark/blue side of sea-green.
Note that this model is just a test figure, and will probably go in the bin once my first squad has arrived, so don't worry about it not being a pre heresy look/feel, its just a standard termie I had lying around at home to paint.

I'd really love to hear your thoughts/opinions, I'm pulling my hair out going over and over this constantly with myself!

I quickly threw together a comparison of the next shade up with my airbrush, but am not sure at all.

First off Love it,the contrast you achieve is great.
The green is a lot like mine so,I think its perfect, what color?
Also do not bin that termie, those suits are Heresy Era too now

I'd like you to give a rundown on how you did that face,if you could.

No worries, it's Bugman's Glow -> cadian fleshtone -> reikland fleshshade -> touch up of cadian fleshtone -> kislev flesh and finally a few points of kislev flesh + white.

I think it is a tad too green myself...

It's really nice work, and i love the weathering and the highlights, the only criticism i would have would be the green's too saturated. it's almost verging on being teal, it needs to be a bit paler. :) not so much Lighter, there are a lot of lovely looking darker SoH armies, but just a bit less bright.

Great job though, just tweak the colour a little bit. :P

My comments echo what has already been said.

The Indomitus Pattern Terminator armour of your test figure is now Pre-Heresy, It is mentioned in HH: Betrayal on page 237.
You just need to get rid of that Crux Terminatus on the shoulder pad.

As for your colour, practically spot on. I don't know if it's my screen, the photo, or the paint scheme itself but the mini does look a little bright or vibrant for the Sons Of Horus.
If it is the scheme, then maybe a wash could take the edge off?

Besides that, keep going. Your army is shaping up nicely.

Welcome back! :)

I like the test mini a lot, and wouldn't worry about the shade--it looks good, and there is plenty of room for small colour variations inside a Legion. Plus the apparent colour will also depend on the light source so you could also have different hues of sea green on planets with different stars, for example.

Interesting Explaination does that mean if the Ultras made a compliance of Krypton they would look like Blood Angels  .

I don't know what colour the star/atmosphere of Krypton are, but maybe!

So I whacked together a second test figure with the next shade up. Again this is just a test mini I'll be biffing in the bin, and I absolutely hate the paint job on the head, but am quite happy with the shade of sea-green that it came out as?

What are peoples thoughts?

That works tons better. :D shade of green is muuuch more SoH.

Love the weathering, seriously. it's just a really nice mix of things.

Thanks guys, that gives me a lot more confidence going forward.

Im pretty torn from here though, in that I'd love the look and feel of plonking 40ish pre heresy termies and horus down on the table, but there are so many other units I'd love to paint up instead! Gah, what to do, what to do?!
