Title: Astelan - wargear?
Magos Explorator - December 13, 2012 12:30 AM (GMT)
I was just wondering whether any source stated Astelan's common wargear loadout? I did a search online but didn't spot anything, and don't have ebooks where you can easily search that way.

From HH Anthology 'Tales of Heresy', from the short story 'Call of the Lion' by Gav Thorpe, here's what I found:Astelan was clad in his power armour, as were his three companions, Galedan, Astoric and Melian, each a captain of the companies carried aboard the battle-barge. Their armour was shadow-black, broken only by the red winged-sword insignia of the Legion upon their left shoulder pad and their company markings on the right. The dull grey of exposed piping and cables broke through from under the overlapping ceramite chestplates, coiling under the arms to the backpacks that supplied power to the suits.
Though painstakingly maintained, each showed small but telltale signs of wear and tear – spots of corrosion, repaired battle damage and makeshift replacement parts. Astelan had heard that newer versions of armour had been developed, with reinforced joints and fewer weak spots, but it had been more than four years since his Chapter had been in contact for a substantial resupply.
(Unfortunately, doesn't state what Mark of armour they are wearing.)
pp. 199-200At Astelan’s waist hung a power sword and his holstered bolt pistol. They had been in his possession since he was promoted to sergeant, only fourteen years ago, and they were as much a badge of office for him as the insignia inscribed upon his chest plastron.
Here's a visual aid:Chapter Master Merir Astelan
Hope this helps!

Sounds like he's wearing an artificered Mk IV breastplate.

Thanks, guys. That is helpful.
Algrim: aside from the filename, do we know for certain that the guy in the front there is Astelan? What's the source (somewhere in CV?) If so, I think we can see his company markings, but I am a bit surprised by the green and knight-ness of his appearance, given I thought he was a Terran.

40k wikia generally isn't a good source for this sort of thing...

Actually, the picture in question is from the ''Horus Heresy: Collected Visions,'' pg. 273. It is entitled 'Astelan: Chapter Master of the Dark Angels' by Sam Wood. Hope this helps!

Based on the artwork he could be wearing a "blinged-up" standard Mk IV breastplate with the rest of his armour being Mk III or IV altered to a Knightly style with bespoke pieces.
The helmet does look like a Mk II-style, but could just as easily be a variant unique to the First Legion after Caliban.
