Title: Creeping Death - a Death Guard PLOG

Whitehorn - November 19, 2012 03:12 PM (GMT)
As is customary, I am announcing the birth of my next pre-Heresy project by posting a few words, but no pictures.

OK, maybe 1 picture. Chris Seadon's lovely Death Guard that keep inspiring me:

Why did I chose Death Guard? They're one of the legions I've kept on my radar for a while. I have a small selection of models sat in a box waiting for the day (a bit like my World Eaters and Thousand Sons...), but they are also one of my first steps into PH (if you remember my brief foray into Dusk Raiders).

I fancy a lot of foot slogging marines, so what better than the cold horde of XIV?

I've not decided whether I'll be going down the path or loyalist or traitor yet. First up will be test paints.

Intended army list?

I try to aim for a composition that's different to my existing forces. When it comes to marines, I'm pretty saturated as far as Dreadnoughts are concerned, but have steered clear of Devastators to date. So, I am planning Tactical + Devastator squads, with a small cohort of Terminators. Vehicles are not immediately planned, but I would like an excuse to grab a Spartan and/or Felblade at some point!

Yeeess, yeeeeeesssss...the power of the Death Lord grows! :P

Great to see you swinging back into action 'Horn.

Footslogging 'horde' (well, relatively speaking!) armies really sum up the pre-heresy vibe, and the Death Guard in particular. I'm not sure as yet whether it's tactically feasible to field a vehicle-less army, the inability to respond quickly may be counterbalanced by the sheer wall of infantry you could put up against, and indeed behind, defences. Time and experience will tell.

And then you can spend those points (and indeed cash) saved from vehicles on terminators, (and dreads, although you said you're not going with them).

Will be very interested to see what you come up with, modelling and army list -wise!

That Chris' stuff is really, properly good, although if he's still using that termie as a Deathshroud, he should really give him a helmet - they're supposed to be anonymous! :ph43r:

The thread title (creeping death) is an interesting one, considering the nature of army you're choosing. "Creeping barrage" was a tactic used in World War One, where instead of bombarding with artillery (giving your enemy plenty of warning that you're coming) and *then* advancing, troops would advance just behind the artillery. You still warned the enemy (albeit it a little less), you got friendly-fire, but the enemy was never quite ready for it!

I wonder if the same could be achieved for the Death Guard. Perhaps your Devastators could be armed with Missile Launchers, or you could get some artillery pieces, and have "danger-close" firing-runs with a solid infantry wall advancing? And characterful, emotionless detachment about the fact that you might hit your own men? I think it suits Death Guard perfectly, and it's not a million miles away from your original outline.

I love the snap fire rule with 6th edition, so I do intend to have squadrons of walking Heavy Support.. Heavy Bolters, Krak Missiles, Autocannons...

Then there's Marshal Durak Rask giving them rerolls and bonuses :)

I have a Whirlwind and Vindicator spare. so perhaps these can join the advance. Perhaps a Typhon eventually.

Unfortunately, not all marines stood up to the viciousness of the Orks...

I've kinda painted all the Mk 3 I could find... and thats the mark I want to go forward with for the majority of Death Guard.

However, I've been having lots of fun with my airbrush... painting Orks and a Knight
