Title: Iron Warriors 6th Grand Company, 1st Battalion

Mortarion - September 24, 2012 09:24 PM (GMT)
Recently my Iron Warriors took a bit of a sideline recently, between various other projects and real life they've languished for a couple of months but with the release of the HH book I thought I should pick them up again. Now that I've updated my army list to the new list I can start planning where I'm going with them, I've had to change surprisingly little actually, so here's the army as it stands.

Arsen Thaddea, Lord Commander of the 6th Grand Company and Command Squad
Lord Commander Thaddea, a Native Olympian, often found himself at odds with his contemporaries within the Legion due to his willingness to work alongside other legions. After several successful campaigns he was given command of the 73rd Expeditionary Fleet fighting alongside companies from several other legions including the Blood Angels and World Eaters. At the time the Heresy broke the 73rd were far out on the edge of the Ghoul Stars completing a protracted campaign against desert dwelling Orks on the world designated Seventy Three Twelve.

They're fantastic! A true force to be proud of!

My favourite is the guy with the pistol and sword stepping onto the girder! Brilliant!

James.

malika - September 25, 2012 05:37 AM (GMT)
Where did you get those Terminators? I didn't know they were out yet...

Thanks James, he's actually the only one that's finished at the moment. A lot of them just need little bits of finishing off then a good dousing with weathering powders to give them the "extended campaign in the desert" look that I'm going for, especially now I've learnt how to add to chips and scratches without having to actually carve chunks out of the models.

@Malika: They were on sale with the book at GD, I promised myself if I only bought one thing(other than the book) while I was there it was going to be these guys! They're awesome models and they fit together really nicely but once I looked at them I knew I had to paint the heads before I glued them in place, it would have just been too hard to get inside that gorget to paint the detail on the helmets.

Hopefully will get some more building/painting done tonight, on the bench at the moment are 2 more marines for 1st Tactical squad to round them out to 10, 4 more for my Breaker squad to bring them to 5, 4 more for the Heavy Support squad and another Vindicator, though I'm not looking forward to cutting up the Rhino chassis again to fit the demolisher cannon!

bulldoglopez - September 25, 2012 07:50 AM (GMT)
Nooooo! Don't cook them!

Michaelangelos - September 25, 2012 10:32 AM (GMT)
I hate you....

I love you....

Nooooooooo, this army is AWESOME

I hate that I don't have an awesome force like yours!

The campaign in the desert, is it canon or just your own campaign. If so then I think you should continue with the campaign and intergrate it with your captain!

the damned artificer - September 25, 2012 11:17 AM (GMT)
I love your army! Even though army wise we are the biggest rivals of all time :P
But I have a soft spot for the 4th legion as well :P

And I must admit I hate you a little bit for having those cataphractii terminators, they are sooo gorgeous :D

The mechanicum segment for allies works great as well, and I hear rumours that they will feature in book II Massacre part one, so that works out well for you :P

The Culexus assassin is a really cool model, is it based on DE parts with the original Culexus head??

Mortarion - September 25, 2012 09:54 PM (GMT)
@Bulldoglopez: Lol, I wouldnt do that, not unless I lost my mind! Until I set myself up a lightbox of some kind the hob is the best place for me to photograph them since I can use the lights on the cooker hood for a good overhead lightsource.

@Michaelangelos: Yeah the campaign in the desert is my own devising. I've picked up a decent(ish) map making program so will be making some campaign maps and such in the future to go along with the fluff I'm working on for it. Originally it was going to be on an ice world but I hated the idea of doing a snow covered realm of battle but I'm actually glad I changed it now, much more fun to make them look sand scoured and dusty!

@the damned artificer: Thanks mate :) I'm a big fan of your ''fists, whereabouts are you based? Once I've got the full army together(3000pts is my current goal) I'd love to get together and have a good old grudge match, Iron Cage style against them!

Yeah theyre covered a little in Betrayal but nothing much so will probably use the Tempus Fugitives ruleset for them in the interim, I'll be intrigued to see what FW foes with the full list for them that and the models for them too!

Yeah the Culexus is mostly Dark Eldar Wych bits, I was inspired by the cover of Nemesis and got the bits together ages ago but only recently got round to assembling her. I just had to reposition the two halves of the hips to widen the stance to make her look natural balanced on the girder, though it did mean I had to stick a penny to the underside of the base since she is massively top heavy due to the metal head!

kaleb daark - September 25, 2012 10:01 PM (GMT)
I'm an Imperial Fist fan, so Ihate you!

Especially when you show stuff like this.

This is great job mate, from the the commander to the simple marine.

The Mechanicum part looks very very promising, can't wait to see more.

And the Culexus Base is a nice improvement on a mini which needs it.

Spot on!

Hehehe already the first challenge have been tossed across the table, you are indeed an Iron Warrior by heart aye ;)

I am based in gloriously rainy Denmark, but sadly I don't play the game (not yet at least) and before you call me crazy let me defend myself and say that I have only been in this hobby for around 12 years by now... No wait, that didn't help did it XD
But, but, I have recently acquired the new Dark Vengeance box, and have been toying with the idea of actually trying the game out so that I one day might be able to play with my miniatures, but lets see how that goes..

I also collect Iron Warriors for 40K btw :P

Back to your army:

I just noticed that you have exclusively mk III armour, very iron warrior'ish indeed, even though I feel like a few suits of crusade armour wouldn't destroy the feel of the army either :)

Mortarion - September 26, 2012 10:16 PM (GMT)
@Kaleb: thanks mate, the mechanicum stuff was something I started a while back but got shelved but looking to pick them up again to go along with the Iron Warriors. The Culexus is a really dated model and the dark eldar stuff seemed perfect for updating the model.

@the damned artifacer: hmm, I think I would struggle to get a game with you from sunny manchester!

I dont play as much as I used to anymore, though with the release of the book my world eaters friend might start playing more so I should be able to get a couple of games soon.

At the moment they are all MkIII, I see the Iron Warriors being a fairly uniform legion, quite faceless as well. There will be MkII armour in the army but it will be limited to Assault Squads and Recon Squads

Mortarion - October 12, 2012 11:29 AM (GMT)
A little update, things have been slow due to waiting for bits to arrive from various places, however, painting can begin in ernest now as I managed to lay my hands on some 1mm masking tape to do those bloody hazard stripes! I had a bit of a crack at one of the cataphracts with it and it makes it soooo much easier to do them! I've also been reading up on painting chips and battle damage on silver armour and I've given it a proper go with this guy, I just need to add battle damage to the shoulder pads now.

Also the multimelta's arrived to finish off my Achilles! I need to fill a few gaps but once thats done I'll be getting it sprayed up and ready! I pilfered the sponsons from my blood angels Mk2b, why cant the just make the conversion kit anymore! Originally I wasnt going to change the engine block but in the ende I decided it would help tie in the Achilles to the Mk2b and also the Proteus and Spartan designs.

Ilmarinen - October 13, 2012 10:15 AM (GMT)
That's a nicely brutal looking Achilles!

The battle damage on metal armour is very nice - how did you do it?

Great idea for doing hazard stripes. *yoink*

the damned artificer - October 13, 2012 11:26 AM (GMT)
That is a great update!

The achilles is great, I was toying with doing something similar, as it was the Imprial Fists that invented this particular land raider config, so it would be very fitting for my army. At some point I was even considering basing it on a proteus, then my senses came back to me XD

And the metal weathering and hazard stripes look very good.

I'm so looking forward to getting Betrayal next week, as I want to make a list for my own army as well :D

Its actually surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it. tear of a piece of sponge, I use just normal kitchen sponge but a piece from a blister pack will work just as well. Try and get a really small bit.

Dab a small amount of skull/ceramite white onto the model where you want the damage to be. This is probably the hardest bit coz its really easy to overdo it or end up with a massive splodge of white on the model.

Now paint most of where you've just put the white black leaving just a thin line of white on the bottom edge. Viola! Easy battle damage for silver. Like I say, the only tricky part is actually putting the white on as you can end up with massive splodges if your not careful. Hope it helps, I'll take some step by step pics when I do the rest of the Cataphracts, which should be later tonight or tomorrow.

The masking tape is a god send, I got a set of 1mm, 2mm and 3mm tape. Here's a liink

Masking Tape

@the damned artifacer: I hesitated when I did it just coz neither kits is cheap and I kept thinking "What if it looks good in my head but when I do it it comes out naff" but in the end I just decided to take the plunge and I like how it turned out.

Betrayal is amazing, ive barely put it down since games day and the army list is great, there was a few bits I was unsure about when I'd just skimmed it, but once I'd read through the whole thing I couldnt fault it one bit.

the damned artificer - October 14, 2012 08:09 PM (GMT)
Yeah exactly, it's not exactly a cheap conversion, but I gotta say I am tempted to make one now that I've seen yours have turned out so great :D

I can't wait to get my book, have been waiting for my order of stuff since the 28th because of the bloody mk IV command set being in back order... But it should arrive tomorrow or Tuesday :D

Machinepriest - October 15, 2012 10:52 AM (GMT)
Ok, enough with the lurking...
This blog is fantastic!
Really makes me want to give Iron Warriors a try.
The Terminator looks amazing and I can't wait to see the rest of the squad painted to the same standard.
I have to ask though, how do you paint your iron and gold?
Judging from the latest photos of the Terminator, you have reached a perfect balance between dirty and shiny :)

Cheers // Andreas

Ilmarinen - October 16, 2012 08:12 AM (GMT)
@Morty - cheers dude! That's simpler than I thought it'd be, but really effective.

Vredesbyrd - October 21, 2012 07:29 PM (GMT)
These really are gorgeous looking IW, but I have to ask - what have you used to make your Knight? I can see Blood Slaughterer in the top half of it, but that's about all I can positively identify. Its a lovely conversion that one.

Vinnie - October 21, 2012 07:37 PM (GMT)
Pretty sure that's one of King Fluff's knight 'conversions', that one...

Mortarion - October 22, 2012 11:14 AM (GMT)
@Machinepriest: Go for it! Theres not nearly enough PH Iron Warriors out there! As for the Iron/Brass/Gold, Heres what I use, most of its in the old paints though so if your on all new paints then you may need to find substitutes

Armour:
Base spray of Tamiya Light Gunmetal
Highlight Leadbelcher
Wash Badab Black/Nuln Oil(either or)

Trim for Troops:
Base Calthan Brown
Layer Tin Bitz
Wash Devlan Mud/Agax Earthshade(either or)
Layer Runelord Brass
Highlight 75/25 Runelord Brass and Mithril Silver

Trim for Officers(Gold):
Base Snakebite Leather
Drybrush Mithril Silver
Heavy Wash Gryphonne Sepia
Highlight Burnished Gold
Light Wash Gryphonne Sepia

@Ilmarinen: No problem, I found it on a blog somewhere, think it might have been From The Warp.

@Vred: Vinnie is correct, its one of King Fluff's conversion kits, the legs and such he scratchbuilt then cast up.

On a related note to that, did anyone else see King's Knights at Golden Daemon?

Got another Terminator finished and "hopefully" going to try and finish the squad tonight!
