Title: Pre-Heresy World Eaters by Brother V

Brother V - August 4, 2012 11:57 PM (GMT)
Hey all,
Starting a simple log to chronicle my creation of a Crusade Era World Eaters force, I wanted to represent them at the height of the crusade, after Angron has rejoined the legion and his influence has slowly started to creep into the ranks in the form of the Butchers Nails. So without further adieux, lets get started!

Here is the first test model for the scheme.

Good paint scheme, man! I especially like the battle damage, and your WE icon on the left shoulder looks sharp. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the force!

Which list will you be using? Space Marines, CSMs, Blood Angels, Space Wolves?

Brother V - August 5, 2012 12:24 AM (GMT)
Here is the first Assault Marine of the 3rd Company, XII Legion.

Thanks! and I plan on using Blood Angels, they seem to fist the post-Angron Crusade Era World Eaters perfectly.

the List is going to be:

Wrathe Berzerker Veterans (10x Death Co) - 1x PF, 2x Hand Flamers, 4x PS - 305pts
Land Raider Blade of Fury - 250pts

TROOPS:
Assault Squad Tagore (10x Marines) - 2x Meltas, 1x Power Sword - 225pts
Assault Squad Konan (10x Marines) - 2x Meltas, 1x Power Sword - 225pts

Dreadnought Brutus (Death Co Dread) - 125pts
Drop Pod - 35pts

Dreadnought Wreave (Death Co Dread) - 125pts
Drop Pod - 35pts

Total: 1,500pts

Good to see you here Brother V! :)

As I've said before think you've done a cracking job on them so far. The white in particular is great, one of the hardest colours to paint well. What basecoat did you go from to achieve it?

My only criticism, if I had to make one, is the bolt pistol barrel could do with being drilled out.

I completely agree about the Blood Angels codex - I've written an article on the forum about why it is the best one to use to represent PH World Eaters (http://z15.invisionfree.com/The_Great_Crus...?showtopic=4390) it looks like you have come to the same conclusion, but don't know if it is any use to you?

Brond is a cool idea for a character, have you thought about how you are going to go about making him?

Thanks Pacific!

As far as the base coat goes, I use the Vallejo line of paints for all my work, I airbrush Vallejo Model Air (VMA) - US Grey on the entirety of the model minus the shoulder pads and jump pack, which are left off the model. Then I airbrush a coat of VMA US Light Grey at a downward 45 degree angle. Finally I Airbrush a 1:15 mix of VMA US Light Grey and VMA White straight downwards onto the model. The final coup de grace that ties it all together is done after all the detailing and icons have been done on the model, I apply a liberal coat of Light Sienna Vallejo Pigment, blow off the excess and then lock it in with a gloss varnish coat followed by a matte coat.

As far as Brond goes I was thinking of using this model and converting the power fist as well as sword arm to carry tycho's Combi-Melta.

Here's the next 4 Assault Marines, as you can see this whole army will be "Tall Scale" I'll throw in a tutorial later for those interested, but I feel that this slight modification makes Marines the actual height they're supposed to be without going overkill and forcing you to move up to 40mm bases and huge marines.

Welcome Brother V
You gotta be stoked as hell for Betrayer to come out,me too.
Your World Eaters look great.
Are the painted ones TS too?if so you did a good job redoing the cabling.
I prefer the spacer method to the Termie method of True Scaling myself.

It would be awesome if you came out with a airbrush tutorial ;)

Brother V - August 5, 2012 07:46 PM (GMT)
Thanks Big Will, and yes I am chomping at the bit for Betrayer!

And to answer your questions, yes the painted Marines are all tall scale, and I'll add an airbrush tutorial to the list of tutorials people have been requesting haha.

anyways, here's the newest update. A group shot of the painted Assault Marines so far:

and Honored Brother Brutus. Brutus is a veteran of the old War Hounds Legion and one of the first to be honored by the Primarch Angron with the Butchers Nails.

Awesome start on this army and that contemptor, Brutus, he is dead on awesome! More stuff like that :D Ohh and more gore ;D hehe

BA Glover - August 5, 2012 11:51 PM (GMT)
I agree. Great looking World Eaters. You'd inspire me to paint some if they weren't Traitors:)

Are you hand painting all your markings? If you are you have a steady hand and your very darned consistent. Keep it up.

Thanks Glover, and yeah I hand paint all the markings, took a lot of practice that was earned painting up an army of Iron Warriors, that many caution stripes will definitely teach you a steady hand or kill you in the process ;)

An amazing job on that Dreadnought! I love the effect used on the claws, and the fact that there is no blood on them (you can imagine them buzzing with electrical energy, and the blood hissing as it evaporates!)

Turbo fans are ace on the assault troops as well, the pre-heresy design always reminds me of the artwork from Rogue Trader (and how some of the concepts from that old book have been squeezed into Pre-Heresy, I always thought that was a really neat touch with the Collected Visions books)

Brother V - August 6, 2012 12:01 PM (GMT)
Thanks Pacific, I had the same thing in mind when I painted the claws, glad I conveyed it well. It never makes sense when people have a power weapon, but paint gore on it, it's understandable that if your tearing someone apart with lightning claws it's not going to be clean and surgical, but at very least the energized blades are always gonna be clean and sparkly.

And I agree about the rogue trader artwork, there's always been a pull to it that I can't ignore and I love the image of loud noisy smoke belching turbofans rocketing hyper-agressive gene-forged killer into battle, gotta love that 80's ultraviolence B)

bulldoglopez - August 8, 2012 04:14 AM (GMT)
Great stuff! I love the blood stains. It looks like Brutus just wrecked someones day. Keep it up, looking forward to seeing more!

Very nice stuff; just enough blood without detracting from the rest of the model/paintwork.

Will you have any models with the 'bunny ears'?

Brother V - August 10, 2012 07:22 PM (GMT)
I'm debating it, I might do some form of proto-bunny ears on the Berzerker Squad, but I'm still on the fence about it. I'm not too much of a bunny ears fan, but they work nicely for visual recognition of the crazies.

Michaelangelos - August 12, 2012 03:48 PM (GMT)
Wow! these world eaters are pretty good!

I think you should have loyalist dead on one of the bases? :P

Maybe a Istvaan 3 diorama where a proto bunny ears berserker is ripping shreds out of a loyalist world eater?

Markus Krell - August 12, 2012 06:13 PM (GMT)
Brother V: What about captains having the ears - prototype ones (small artcard ones)?

If you do beserkers, more blood please!! I always think that the beserkers never washed their armour and they're covered in loads of dried blood too!!
The more that had butcher's nails and became beserkers, the more the legion turned red.

Please no! :)

You can become an honourary member of the anti-bunny ear fanclub if you don't use them..

I have a couple of quite sarcastic (paragraph length) stories about the problems of bunny ears, let me know if you haven't read them and I will post.. ^_^

Markus Krell - August 12, 2012 08:43 PM (GMT)
I think if they're the size as seen on the cover of Tales of Heresy, then they're okay; anything larger just looks silly.

Pacific: Sharing is caring, I look forward to reading them.

I think I found a way to do the butchers nails without having to do the bunny ears, they've always seemed a bit ridiculous to me anyways. The way ADB described the Night Lords' winged helms as being used for ceremonial occasions seemed fitting to me, and the World Eaters are a legion that seems far more concerned with functionality, rather than with looking snazzy.

Regarding the topic of Bunny Ears (and discussion forthwith), there was a topic in the Q&A section if anyone has discovered something in Butcher's Nails, and wants to post there (I STILL haven't heard it, and he calls himself a World Eaters fan! :D )
http://z15.invisionfree.com/The_Great_Crus...?showtopic=5112

On a separate note, I typed in 'Thrax the despoiler bunny ears' into google and my stories came up 1st, how friggin awesome is that! Aaron Dembski-Bowden eat your heart out ! user posted image :D

Here we are, while we are waiting for Brother V to finish moving and get his ass into gear! :)

The enemy were out there somewhere, he knew it. "Gunnery sergeant, any sight of the enemy?" Said Major Tom. "Nope sorry sir they're clearly using those ruins ahead for cover, cant get a bead on them sir!"
"Ah! Wait a moment sir!" said the Gunnery Sergeant. "There, I can see what looks to be a giant pair of wings bobbing along behind that crater!"
"Excellent! Good work Gunnery Sergeant, aim for those wings! Range 100m. No wind. Fire!"
The guns fired, followed by an explosion.
"Great! Target destroyed! Thank goodness those marines wear those helmets!" said Major Tom, before brushing some dust from his lapel.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Drax the Despoiler was a vision of hell. Clad head to toe in deep red armour, brass ornamental skulls and the skinned and melted faces of foes who had dared to cross him. In his hand he carried a giant chain axe, the size of a small child, its metal surface covered in gore. His other hand carried an ornamental plasma pistol, forged when the Emporer himself bestrode the galaxy. For ten thousand years Drax had fought the lackies of the Emporer, killing them without mercy and taking their skulls as offerings for the Blood Throne. Entire worlds had fallen before him.

This was the site witnessed by Dave the guardsman as he entered the room. Doing what any rational minded person would do when confronted with such a horror, dave dropped his lasgun, turned on the spot and ran.

With a howl of anger, Drax gave chase and ran after dave across the room. However, as he ran out of the door, he forgot that his helmet had giant appendages which caught on the door frame wrenching his head backwards, breaking his neck and killing him instantly.

These guys are brutal - the blood work is simply stunning.

It may be a bit late, now - but I'd really love to see a variety of gladiator and other style weapons mixed in with these bods, like tridents, maces, morning stars, etc. They would represent the combat specialisms of various Astartes who (like Angron) were forced into arena combat before the Emperor turned up.

Brother V - September 23, 2012 04:13 PM (GMT)
Well I have a lot planned for the Bezerkers, so you'll see a lot more variation with them, however as far as I know Angron never pulled recruits from his unnamed home world.

Morden279 - September 23, 2012 06:06 PM (GMT)
Apologies, I thought Angron managed to take a few blokes with him, but a recheck of the fluff has me corrected. :)

Brother V - October 4, 2012 09:25 PM (GMT)
So after a serious amount of revising, I've redone most of my list, it will now go as follows:

Army List:
- 3rd Company Captain (Astorath) - In Progress
- Terminator Squad Valar - In Progress
- Berzerker Dreadnought Brutus (Death Company Dread) - Complete- Berzerker Dreadnought Brutus (Death Company Dread) - In Progress
- Wrathe Berzerker Squad (Death Company) - In Progress
- Tagore Assault Squad - In Progress
- Konan Assault Squad - Complete
- Drop Pod - In Progress
- Drop Pod - In Progress
- Land Raider Blade of Fury - In Progress

The Berzerker (death co) squad will now be equipped with jetpacks and accompany the Captain of the 3rd (Astorath) and the Landraider will serve as transport for the terminators. I'm at a crossroads with the Terminators on whether or not to go Tartaros or Cataphractii. The Cataphractii seem more World Eaters-y but the Tartaros make more sense according to the fluff wherein Horus directed the newest and best equipment to the traitor legions before the onset of the heresy.

cobra6 - October 5, 2012 07:33 PM (GMT)
They're looking great man! From a strictly gaming perspective, I'd recommend making Brutus a Furioso rather than a DC Dred. I also play PH World Eaters using Blood Angels rules, and the difference that single point of AV makes is HUGE - especially if you'l be fighting krak grenade-toting Astartes like any self respecting World Eaters should!

Brother V - October 5, 2012 08:44 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the heads up Cobra! I didn't even know the Furioso had 13 front armor, that definitely makes a difference! seeing as I don't have to use them as one or the other because of blood angels paint schemes, i'll probably switch them back and forth depending on the battle, especially since the points costs are the exact same.

Brother V - October 9, 2012 06:32 AM (GMT)
Alrighty gents, I present to you Captain Crixus Urteil, commander of the World Eaters 3rd assault company. He's my 'counts as' Astorath the grim.

But seriously, I really like the balance between the retention of the model's Imperial iconography and the increasing gory rabidity of the World Eaters at the start of the Heresy.

Thanks Morden, I always loved Crixus from the show, he embodies the noble brutality of the World Eaters so well, and that's what I tried to convey in the model, A captain who, despite being awarded an Aquila for exemplary valor, has covered it with a bandoleer of skulls and blood, showing his growing disregard for the revered icons of the Imperium.

cobra6 - October 9, 2012 09:15 PM (GMT)
If you ever wanted to do an alternate model of your captain without a helmet, the Chaos Marauder Horseman head with a fauxhawk looks alarmingly like Crixus from Spartacus.

It's an excellent parallel to make. A primary cause of Heresy is the Astartes' warrior brotherhood with one-another overriding their loyality to wider authority of the Imperium (or in the show's case, the House of Batiatus).
