Title: Death Guard Armor Marks
Inquisitor Malaclypse - April 10, 2012 06:16 AM (GMT)
Basic question: would the Death Guard have Mk VI armor at any point of the pre-Heresy through the Heresy up to the siege of Terra?
keeping in mind, fluff wise i don't know in the time line when the Raven Guard received Mk VI armor as compared to when the DG went Nurgly.
in Mechanicum an observation was made on Mars that traitor Legions were receiving better equipment than the Loyalists.
And keep in mind that the IF's didn't gift the RG with Mk VI until after the events in Mechanicum, if you've read Deliverance Lost.
and it doesn't matter how they got the armor: would the DG have been issued Mk VI before RG via the AdMech or simply looted it from someone else?
and depending on the answer, i may have some sets of Armor to trade off... <_<

Hmm, good question. There are a few references we can go on so far.
The cover of Galaxy in Flames shows DG in what I think is Mk4 armour, but there is a beakie helmet clearly shown (there is a beakie helmet shown on the cover of Fulgrim too, so they did exist by Istvaan III and V). Deliverance Lost states that the Raven Guard were instrumental in field testing what became Mk6, so I suspect that there were prototype parts available prior to the field-testing of full suits.
The DG marine in the lineup in Collected Visions has the classic DG 'Armorum Ferrum' helmet, what seems to be a Mk3 groin guard, and Mk6 style legs. The helmet, despite being called 'Iron Armour' I think is a variant Mk4 helmet (having tried it on Mk3 and Mk4, it doesn't really fit the Mk3 design, but does fit the streamlined look of Mk4). Again, the Mk6 legs suggests that prototype parts were in development prior to the RG doing full field testing (also shown on other HH covers).
A lot of the images of DG in Collected Visions show them in Mk4 helmets (also with the variant grill-faceplate helmet - I'm thinking of using Grey Knight helmets for these) so I think it's pretty safe to say that they were issued Mk4 before they fell to Nurgle. Beyond that I'm not sure, but the FW Nurgle DG kit has Mk5 torsos, so it seems you'd be ok with anything that isn't Mk7 (but be very sparing with the Mk5 and Mk6).
My personal plan (for my DG) is to add cables to the Mk2 and Mk3 (to match the original sketches of the armour marks, and fit with the 'extra cables' DG look) and have a few Mk4 with the classic DG helmets (de-Nurglified FW ones) and to scatter a few Mk6 parts through the Mk4 squads (but not have full suits of Mk6).
Hope this helps. :)

As per the text in 'Deliverance Lost', we know that certain Legions were involved in the field testing of the Corvus pattern armours. Therefore, it's not unreasonable to assume that Death Guard COULD have a few of these suits knocking around their Companies...
I don't think they would ever have had access to the suit in the same numbers that the other Legions do, though. Depending on when Mortarion makes his final jump to Terra (which I'm guessing will be sometime during the Age of Darkness?) the Legion will be stranded for a long time and miss out on the final stages of the advance.
Conjecture, on my part... :D

and this is why i love this site.
you guys are so knowledgeable and thoughtful with your advice.
thanks so much, i really appreciate the assist on this and remember to use latter armor types sparingly.
in the future i hope that i can post some completed models on the blog.
oh, and @ Ilmarinen, there are actually TWO beakie helms on the cover of Galaxy in Flames. look really hard.

I agree with Inquisitor Malaclypse, you guys are soooooo knowledgable. Thanks for answering his question because you answered my unspoken question of the RG having MK VI armor (not quite to Deliverance Lost yet :( ) I was unsure if I could have MKVI on RG during the massacre on Istvaan III. Seems like I could throw in the five suites I have! THANKS!!!!

Heh, I've just looked really hard at the Galaxy In Flames art, and there are a whole bunch of Death Guard with beakie helms (middle right)!!!
Looks like you might have to say that the DG were also involved in the field testing of Mk6 Shroud! ;)
ShroudFilm - April 25, 2012 09:48 PM (GMT)
When have we ever said that they weren't?
There are also beakies at Isstvan V, on the Emperor's Children side, and one in the Sons of Horus pre-Heresy.

Depends on how you read your previous comment in this thread matey! :)
I got the impression that you were thinking that the DG wouldn't have had that many beakies - I just thought it was worth mentioning that the GIF cover has flippin' oodles of 'em! (which I'd never spotted before)
I'm really quite surprised at how many there are on there - far more than I'd have expected - hence my tongue-in-cheek comment that they might have to be one of the other Legions more involved in field testing! :D

Didn't all the Word Bearers aboard the Furious Abyss wear Mk6

ShroudFilm - April 26, 2012 09:24 AM (GMT)
Yes, although that may be subject to change...
You also have a guy wearing "Mark V". Retcon retcon, how I adore thee...
Ilmarinen - ...and as for Death Guard, setanta41 said FIVE suits in his army. That seems like a reasonable representative sample for field testing. What I actually said was that yes, they could have been equipped with Mark VI if they were involved in the field testing.
Defeat me on semantics, you shall not. :D Back me into a corner and with my mighty powers I will simply have the editorial team retcon a novel. Be careful what you wish for!
BigWill - April 26, 2012 11:05 AM (GMT)
Oh noes Mk7 for everone...........
Ilmarinen - April 26, 2012 11:28 AM (GMT)
I was just really surprised to see so many Mk6 DG in the Galaxy in Flames art! That book's been out for years and I never noticed them before ...hiding right there in plain sight! Cheeky beakies!!! :P
I certainly wasn't trying to precipitate an editorial incident!

Well, I gladly spent the couple bucks for the BL wallpapers of each book and I am so glad I did because the detail in the highest resolution pic is unreal. I have them up on my 42in monitor at all times when I am modeling and painting. Even descent of angels and fallen angels have one beakie each on them! And sorry.....I messed up earlier....my RG diorama is about the Istvaan V massacre.
Shroud.....let your mates at BL know that at least one fan truly loves the new wallpapers!
ShroudFilm - April 26, 2012 06:35 PM (GMT)
Haha, contrary to all the internet nay-saying, sales of those wallpapers have been through the roof!
Ilmarinen - April 26, 2012 06:41 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I may have had a minor grumble about them initially ...but I've still bought several!
Speaking of - when are you going to release the wallpapers for Promethean Sun?!
setanta41 - April 26, 2012 11:48 PM (GMT)
Doh!!! Good call Ilmarinen.....I forgot about that one! Is Aurelian up there? Didn't notice it......
