Title: We are betrayed!
Description: Isstvan 5 massacre fun

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - November 10, 2011 03:09 PM (GMT)
Very early days but I'm thinking of building a new army that I hope to use with the fabled new Chaos Legion Codex coming out sometime next year.

I cannot decide between the Sons of Horus or the Black Legion.

Technically Black Legion can be a Scouring period army?

I need your help to decide brothers.

Fingol23 - November 11, 2011 12:02 PM (GMT)
I would say go for the Black Legion but have a very veteran orientated army. That way you have an army which can be used for 40k, possibly the late Scouring period and can also be used to represent the Justarian during earlier eras.

ShroudFilm - November 11, 2011 01:06 PM (GMT)
I'm unsure exactly when the SOH became the BL, but you should note that the Justaerin were exclusively Terminators.

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - November 11, 2011 03:16 PM (GMT)
I was reading the Codex and it says after a few hundred years in the Eye of Terror the other traitor legions combined to destroy the last Sons of Horus fortress and stole Horus' body in the process in a failed attempt to clone him.

Once this happened Abaddon led a counter attack to destroy Horus' body. The Sons of Horus (primarily due to Abaddon's anger at the situation) then renounced Horus and renamed themselves the Black Legion.

So I think it would not work as a Scouring era army as
1 I don't think the scouring lasted hundreds of years
2 the Sons of Horus were in the Eye of Terror when they renamed themselves and they only entered the Eye at the end of the Scouring.

Oh well.

Still doesn't make up my mind though but Sons of Horus would allow me to 'eventually' build a Horus... hmmmm

Ilmarinen - November 11, 2011 05:17 PM (GMT)
I'd have to say Sons of Horus - it's the PH/HH choice! :D

Dargor - November 11, 2011 06:02 PM (GMT)
Go for SoH man, i know i am... ;)

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - November 11, 2011 06:47 PM (GMT)
EOk. I think it will be Sons of Horus.

Do you guys care to share your recipes for the green.

I'm thinking of using Vallejo German army green as a base but not sure what to add for highlights.

Dargor - November 11, 2011 07:35 PM (GMT)
Right now i'm leaning towards Vallejo USMC Tank Crew and White 50:50 and extra white for highlights. I'm gonna try straight USMC Tank Crew Highlight as soon as i get my hands on one.

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - November 12, 2011 11:29 AM (GMT)
It's looking like Vallejo German uniform green, followed by 50:50 with bleached bone and then final highlight with 75:25 bleached bone:German uniform.

Have to dig out that boarding marine...

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - November 12, 2011 06:29 PM (GMT)
Ok, I've made my first purchases to see how this goes.

My army will start with Sicarius who will be the Captain and a boarding marine who will be a Sgt.

I've just been told of a 1000pts tournie at WHW on 11 Feb which I want to attend.

The aim is to get 1000pts painted by then.

I think I'll use the current Codex Chaos but need help making a list that is
A) fluffy for Sons of Horus
B) competitive. So I don't get completely creamed (this is not as important as being fluffy though)

This should help me get a core done quickly.

Oh, I don't want to use termies. Daemons, possibly.

Any tips?

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - November 13, 2011 12:52 AM (GMT)
Well here is a first attempt at a list using Codex: Chaos Space Marines (1000pts):

Chaos Lord
Daemon weapon, Mark of Nurgle

Daemon Prince
Mark of Nirgle, Doombolt

Chaos Space Marine squad (x10)
Aspiring Champion, power weapon, Icon of Nurgle, Melta gun x 2

Chaos Space Marine squad (x10)
Aspiring Champion, power fist, Icon of Nurgle, Melta gun x 2

Chaos Space Marine Havoc squad (x5)
Aspiring Champion, Missile launcher x 2, Lascannon x 2

The main aim of this list is to get a core of an army together and to look good.

I've intentionally not included any vehicles yet as budget is a factor.

I've used Mark of Nurgle but it won't be modelled that way (I just thought that was the best mark to use).

I can see the army getting battered at competition but I think it should be fun.

What do you think? Do you think I should try using Codex: Space Marines instead?

Dargor - November 13, 2011 08:45 AM (GMT)
The choice of codex depends on how you want to model the army.Going for Heresy/late Heresy era?Codex Chaos, daemons and eight pointed starts all around.Going for late Great Crusade/Early Heresy? Codex Marines or Codex Space Wolves. I plan to use C:SW myself. Its good for representing the relatively unruly nature of the Legion (when compared to EC and UM that is) and i believe that the wolves are the closest you can get to Legion organisation without using the Codex Astartes or Daemonic/Chaotic stuff. And since the basic squads (GHs and CSMs) are similarly armed, you can make an easy transition from that codex to Chaos Legions when its released.

If you stick with Codex Chaos, i must recomend a squad of Chosen armed to the teeth with Meltaguns/Plasmaguns. They can infiltrate or outflank and your all infantry force will be able to benefit a bit from that.

Cheers! :)

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - November 13, 2011 08:47 PM (GMT)
I'm going with this list:

Chaos Lord
Daemon weapon, Mark of Nurgle, Melta bombs

Daemon Prince
Mark of Nurgle, wings, Doombolt

Plague Marines squad (x8)
Plague Champion, power weapon, Melta bombs, Melta gun x 2

Plague Marines squad (x8)
Plague Champion, power fist, Melta gun x 2

Chaos Space Marine Havoc squad (x5)
Aspiring Champion, melta bombs.
Missile launcher x 2, lascannon x 2

The idea is that the more veteran elements of the army will look more chaosy so when I get round to making a unit of chosen they will have actual chaos stars on them and flayed skin like in Visions of Heresy.

I'm only using the list to help me build an army.

@Dargor - Which legion badge will you use and what will you be putting on the right shoulder pad?

I think I will use the standard egyptian eye on the left and no idea what for the right yet.

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - November 19, 2011 06:34 PM (GMT)
After all my words here is evidence of a start - both still need a little green stuff work.

What do you think

Sorry for the quality of pics, don't have much time with a 3 month old on my hands.

Azkaellon - November 19, 2011 06:52 PM (GMT)
I wish I got the boarding marine! Looking good nice touch with the wolves swords that somehow seem to look best with the FW armour

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - December 1, 2011 08:41 AM (GMT)
Here is the start of my painting.

Samael, envoy of the Primordial Annihilator

Better pics when @ get the time to set them up - sorry.

byram - December 1, 2011 08:45 AM (GMT)
i like how hes giving the bird

King Fluff - December 1, 2011 09:57 AM (GMT)
Looking awesome Dave :D

Personally I would go with the black jump pack assault troops - works really whell offsetting the sea green armour - then you could have either raptors/possessed with wings or a squad of skyclaws with a wolf priest (which is a mighty combo) or a vanguard vet squad for space marines.

but ultimately they would look awesome and give you that punch you don't have as there are no termies.

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - December 1, 2011 12:42 PM (GMT)
@Byram - I noticed that half way through painting - quite amusing. I did think about using green stuff to make the hand more like it was clenched but thought nah forget it... (yo home to Bell Air) :D

@Ben - Thanks dude - I have painted the model as the armour and back pack are not yet medled to his flesh (I didn't want to blend the green of the armour with the red of the flesh so they are quite distinct. On the model the back back is 'melded' to the best at the back so I kept it green. Thanks for the suggested list options. I think I'll stick with C:CSM at the moment, to be honest it'll be a stretch to get 1,000pts finished for the singles tournie at WHW anyway.

Next on the table is the Sicarius conversion and the first sergeant - hope to make a start on the sgt tonight.

Brother Handro - December 1, 2011 02:52 PM (GMT)
Lovely shade of green! Works great against the red too. I particularly like the fact that he appears to be levitating above his base too. Behold the power of Chaos!

Can't wait for the Sicarus conversion to be painted, keep it up!

Was just looking at this earlier - the Catulan Reavers (being First Company's assault elite) were only ten men, plus Kalus Ekkadon.

Not totally happy with this guy yet and I may work on the highlights some more but here is the first sergeant:

Once I get a few more done I'll crack open the proper camera and take some good shots.

BigWill - December 4, 2011 01:10 PM (GMT)
Is that the boarding marine torso or custom?
Maybe a dark blue highlight for the crest or streaked like Sicarus
Samael is just a fantasticly clean paint job, well done

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - December 5, 2011 11:59 AM (GMT)
Thanks dude.

I was going for dark kind of Victorian funeral theme for the army.

The crest was originally red streaks may be a good idea though - I'll give it some thought.

The daemon Prince kit is a joy to assemble and Samael was fun to paint.

Just printed off the BoLS transfers and sprayed them with clear acrylic. They've come out really well but we'll see how they apply to the models.

Next up is Trajan Nerva, captain of the fourth company. Successor of Hastur Sejeanus. Big boots to fill. May even write up some fluff for this one.

ShroudFilm - December 5, 2011 01:03 PM (GMT)
I really like it, although I think the highlights are a bit muted... maybe that's just the photography though?

I wonder if he would benefit from some more spot-colour? Maybe a red and white kneepad? I actually think the crest would look better white, but then the whole model becomes much less 'funerary'.

Arden Fell - December 5, 2011 01:21 PM (GMT)
I quite like the black and green theme going on here.

I'd suggest putting a black chevron on his loin plates just to break up the expanse of green. Or a company number on a knee pad.

A simple sergeant type chevron on the middle plate might look alright.

BigWill - December 5, 2011 01:29 PM (GMT)
Maybe make the kneepads mettalic.
Don't forget Micro-Sol and Micro-Set are a decalists best friends

ShroudFilm - December 5, 2011 04:48 PM (GMT)
Ooh, how about (and you'll hate me for this!) making all of the raised ridges on the armour golden? Looks good for an officer, especially...

BigWill - December 5, 2011 04:59 PM (GMT)
I just did that on one of mine takes all of a minute and it does indeed look real good for Officer/Sgt
Might the edges also look good in black I wonder

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - December 5, 2011 05:47 PM (GMT)
Gold trim it is. I'll use black trim for regular marines.

Now I just need a chance to get the paints out.

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - December 7, 2011 11:05 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the comments. I decided to keep the black crest.

The gold is brighter than it appears in the photo.

BigWill - December 8, 2011 12:47 AM (GMT)
Now your cooking with gas,the metal knees really look good.
I love the amber eye, don't know why I never thought of that.
Leave the crest as is the black looks good against the gold.

lord_caldera - December 8, 2011 04:48 AM (GMT)
That dark gold looks fantastic against the green. I can't help but feel that the model is too cold though, I think it would benefit from some more red...someplace. Maybe it's the dark eye lenses that are throwing me off.

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - December 8, 2011 07:59 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys I'm much happier now.

I suppose the next question is do I add red fists like in the Collected Visions book?

BigWill - December 8, 2011 01:04 PM (GMT)
Not on him
The red gloves would be for Mk2 where it looks like a glove all around.
It would look wierd with red hands and green forearm armor IMO
I find Dark Flesh the perfect color for SoH gloves however

ShroudFilm - December 8, 2011 01:10 PM (GMT)
I think that looks perfect. I wouldn't change a thing.

BigWill - December 8, 2011 01:28 PM (GMT)
Add Script to the seals and maybe hit it with Dullcote and your done.

Pacific - December 8, 2011 04:59 PM (GMT)
Beautiful work mate, good to see that these are following on from the example of your Wolves!

Looking forward to seeing more.

Wolf Lord Mjolnir - December 8, 2011 05:39 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys.

I really appreciate the comments and as a consequence have made my model much, much better!

Is it too early to add Chaos runes to the script?

I've got a little surprise for any Sons of Horus fans but here is a preview - can you guess what it is for?

If anyone wants the pdf let me know - not tried them out yet but it should work in theory.

Azkaellon - December 8, 2011 10:19 PM (GMT)
Nice changes to the paint scheme, I agree with a bit more red but i'd only add it to the outside of the eye on the chest plate to draw your eye in and to match the decal sheets.

Brilliant as ever especially the little wolf skull details (your never going to get too far away from wolves are you  )
