Title: Fiction contest?

IngoPech - October 12, 2011 07:49 PM (GMT)
Hi lads,
Just wondering 'Shroud if there is going to be a short fiction contest this year?

*prod-prod*

:P

Fingol23 - October 20, 2011 10:13 PM (GMT)
For what its worth I would love to see another one of these

ShroudFilm - October 20, 2011 10:43 PM (GMT)
Hey guys - yes indeed, although at the moment I'm trying to sort out the details!

It's a couple of weeks later than we'd normally announce it, but we will indeed have the traditional annual fiction contest.

In fact, I need to get cracking on that PDF from last year...

malika - October 21, 2011 08:42 AM (GMT)
I'd love to join in this time! What era will we cover this time? Last time it was more Heresy focussed, before it was more about the Crusade. What now? :)

BigWill - October 21, 2011 09:21 PM (GMT)
The Age of Darkness book great as is was only barely scratched the surface of what went on during this period.
I say take the ball and run with it Countinue the Age of Darkness.

TyraelVladinhurst - October 21, 2011 11:37 PM (GMT)
i'm in for this, more then likely expect another night lords story from me...again set during the crusade. of which what's the word limit on the new one?

ShroudFilm - October 22, 2011 10:18 AM (GMT)
It's entirely up to you what you write, there are no guiding themes!

It's always 1000 words. It makes it challenging to write, but still fun to read.

Fingol23 - January 23, 2012 05:35 PM (GMT)
Any idea when we might get to look at some of the entries for this years contest?

TyraelVladinhurst - January 23, 2012 09:24 PM (GMT)
i agree, when will we see this years entries?

Arden Fell - January 24, 2012 09:47 AM (GMT)
Patience folks.

Last years took a while to appear too.

Granted there were twice as many entries, but the anticipation is half the enjoyment.

Apart from that I'm up second, and I don't want to see mine too soon as it was a bit of a rush job.

Must be patient... anticipation building...

Yvraith - February 13, 2012 10:31 PM (GMT)
Try being in my shoes to get any response to what I've written.....
Damn alphabetical order listing....

That said, I'm no where near happy with my entry this year.
I just didn't get the right sort of "feel" in it.... you'll see what I mean once you read it.

Arden Fell - February 13, 2012 10:55 PM (GMT)
Yeah sorry about that Yvraith.

By the time we get to yours I'm just so bitter about how good everyone else is that I'm too busy a) crying b ) smaking my head with the keyboard or c) both, to comment.

But if it's any consolation, I hate how talented you are too. :D

Ha ha ha ha.

Strangely enough, that does make me feel better.... :D

ShroudFilm - February 14, 2012 04:43 PM (GMT)
As a change from the normal procedure, I'm going to post them in a completely random order. Ahriman is always first, and Yvraith always last, otherwise...

Arden Fell - February 14, 2012 06:59 PM (GMT)
Sooooo does this mean we might see some stories soon? -_- :D

& here I was thinking of changing my forum name to "aaYvraith" for 3 months or so of the year to get around my problem.....

ahriman - February 15, 2012 01:56 AM (GMT)
Awesome, was getting a bit tired of the first story being released being one I wrote myself...though there was some honour in it.

Hope its not too long until they're posted :D

Tim the Corsair - February 16, 2012 05:36 AM (GMT)
I'm hanging out for this, was really impressed by the quality last year (and also want to see how my story stacks up, of course).

EdFortune - February 23, 2012 11:02 AM (GMT)
I would be interested to see how my entry faired amongst the others. Fingers crossed and all that.

Fingol23 - February 23, 2012 09:05 PM (GMT)
I'm not bothered if I read Ahriman or Yvraith's stories first, I just want to read any of them :D

Arden Fell - March 2, 2012 01:37 PM (GMT)
You know what this friday afternoon really needs?

A little story to break the tedium until 4pm. ;)

Just saying.

Tim the Corsair - March 19, 2012 09:17 PM (GMT)
Sooooooooo, any news?

Arden Fell - April 8, 2012 11:11 PM (GMT)
In the words of so many annoying kids this bank holiday Easter weekend....

"are we nearly there yet?"

"how much longer?"

"can we stop for a McDonalds?"

Fingol23 - April 19, 2012 04:41 PM (GMT)
In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only waiting for the results of the 2011 short story contest... :P

Maybe they are being held as a reserve, so that we have something to inspire us on the eve of 2012 contest

Or remind us what the quality ought not to be

;)

Arden Fell - April 20, 2012 10:19 AM (GMT)
How long is it until Games Day?

Wasn't last years comp set up to annouce the winner just before it?

Arden Fell - April 26, 2012 08:49 PM (GMT)
All joking aside, is there any chance of an update on when we are likely to see something Shroud?

It's been a long wait this year.

Yeah, even if we have to wait a while for the result it would be nice to at least have the stories to read.

BigWill - April 30, 2012 08:10 AM (GMT)
Thirded
I would like to read to stories, even if it needs to take a bit for judging.
I'd rather have the judge finish his books,I'm sure Nick feels the same
If you are going to put them out any way you can just put them all out there.
I hate waiting every day :P

Arden Fell - April 30, 2012 08:34 AM (GMT)
To be honest, all I'd like is a little response saying, "I plan to post the first one up end of May" as it would be nice to end my sleepless nights of anxiety.

I know it's gonna take time to proof read and tweak and judge, and that this is a side project and done on good will, and we are all very grateful. But a simple "don't worry they are coming (DATE)", "Or we are just finishing them now, look forward to the first next week" would be a lot better than the endless silence.

I'm running out of fingernails here and I'm too fat now to get my toenails to my mouth.

I find myself in a similar situation

But I totally agree. We need a date of some kind, even if it's just "within the next couple of months", or preferably something a little more accurate, but the silence is getting on my nerves as well. Which in itself is an achievement... <_<

ShroudFilm - April 30, 2012 12:31 PM (GMT)
Right, some perspective required, I think...

Gav is not only the judge of this competition, he is also one of my authors... as he has stated on his blog etc, he is currently working very hard on a novel which has been a long time in the making - one of his favourite projects, in fact, and something which the 40k fans are awaiting with baited breath.

From a purely professional perspective, I am not going to pester him to judge this fan-fic contest when we're trying to get his novel finished and edited so it can go to print on schedule.

I'm sure you'll all agree that I am well-placed to get celebrity author involvement in TGC projects and such, but even if I didn't work for BL then this would likely still take second-place in Gav's to-do list until the novel is finished.

I can't discuss the exact schedule of the novel (which is why I haven't commented thus far) but suffice to say I will speak to him again about the contest once he (and I!) have finished with it.

Arden Fell - April 30, 2012 01:56 PM (GMT)
Wish I'd never asked. :(

Won't bother again.

Ilmarinen - April 30, 2012 02:26 PM (GMT)
Shut yer putrid pie-holes and get back in yer boxes, ya scurvy maggots!

Ok, some extra perspective required, I think...

As you may be able to tell, our dear überlord - the great Shrouded one - is thoroughly enjoying his job, but is having to work exceedingly hard ...which means he is slightly less tolerant than a rabid badger with sore gonads ...*ahem* than usual!

As he is doing a spectacularly good job of herding cats, um, keeping BL authors on track, AND getting them to write far better HH stories than we had before he was involved - not to mention creating some flipping fantastic prose of his own - we're all just going to have to be patient a bit longer for the fiction competition.

The longer we have to wait for the fic comp = the better HH novels we'll be reading in the not-too-distant future! :)

ShroudFilm - April 30, 2012 04:39 PM (GMT)
Absolutely... no unnecessary brusqueness intended!

I will be putting ALL of this year's entries into the BL Open Submissions window for you all, too. Can't say fairer than that, eh? ;)

If this is a serious comment then I'm very excited....

Been working on a Novel submission for a while now which won't be ready in time and now have learnt this is the last year for such submissions which irked me somewhat.

Here's hoping 1000 words is enough to make an impression.

BigWill - April 30, 2012 09:46 PM (GMT)
It would be so cool if the 13th Penal Legion made a comeback
I love that trilogy.
Though I suspect it is one of his Eldar books.

That is really cool of you putting them in the open submissions.
This kind of stuff is how you can find a diamond in the rough like that story of the engine that runs faster on bodies.
That short just has to go inprint.

For the record I did'nt think Shroud was Brisque at all.
He just stated the guy is human and the books come first.
Was is the red font that scared ya?
