Title: The Mighty IV Legion
Description: Iron Warriors in Epic scale

ShroudFilm - September 17, 2011 10:57 PM (GMT)
Well, after scaling back my ideas in the absence of any likely Epic gaming opponents, I've finally started to paint my Iron Warriors!

I basically wanted a 6mm scale version of my 40k army, but then I got a bit carried away and bought too much stuff. Nevertheless, I have started with Perturabo and his Terminator squad, and the first Tactical squad:

The sculpted skull on the Chaos Terminator pad makes a perfect IV Legion emblem!

Note the brown hair, tanned skin and bionic eye. I gave up trying to paint hazard stripes on the infantry...

I've noticed from these photos that there are few mistakes which I just couldn't see in person. When the minis are so tiny, it's hard to spot mistakes!

Two more ten-man Tactical squads (both with red-helmeted sergeants), a Landspeeder, a Dreadnought and 3 Rhinos all incoming.

I'd try using a micro pen for the stripes over a yellow basecoat.
Barring that stripe up a backpack banner.
Awesome Perturabo loving the skull badge on him.

I tried the micro pen over Iyanden Darksun - it's far too fiddly on a 6mm mini! I'll save it for the vehicles and banners, as you said.

By the way, did you ever check these Iron Warriors? Maybe they'll inspire you! :)

Wow those are sick
I saw the guy striped up the top of the termie, thats doable.
Lots of good ideas in that thread

I had seen those, and I followed the silver-spray idea... then used a few coats of Badab Black and picked out the details in Chaos Black. Not sure about the gold yet, although I do like his colours...

Might not have to do the gold. Don't remember if the Iron Warriors originally had the gold and hazard stripes in the olden days...

Yay! The size difference between the Chaos and Imperial Terminators makes Perturabo strikingly bigger. Have you done any conversion work to him, or is it simply a case of the models being slightly oddly scaled?

The mix of armour marks in the Tactical squad is a nice touch that adds a bit of individuality, and the similar poses fits nicely with the Legion's background. I'm not a huge fan of the green basing, but it does contrast nicely with the models themselves.

Either way, it's a great start, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of them develop. Which Land Speeder models are you using?

I'll be popping up to Mansfield in a few weeks for the Tempus Fugitives' campaign weekend. Fancy popping up? I haven't seen you guys in ages and it'd be great to catch up over a beer :)

I did some very minor conversion work (i.e. cutting off the trophy rack from his carapace!) but I managed to stop myself from getting too involved with cataphractii shoulders etc...!

I fully intend to mix up armour marks as much as I can, just to make it look like more of a 'rabble'. I've got a whole bunch of Chaos Marines too, which I will de-horn and add to the regular mix. My Landspeeders are the original plastics with the exposed crew. I managed to source FORTY of them, extremely cheaply! :D

When is the TF weekend?

Apologist - September 19, 2011 02:54 PM (GMT)
It's the weekend of the 15th–16th – we'll be sallying up on the Friday evening (14th).

Awesome – that sounds like a cool concept, and it'll help to differentiate and break up the formations. Will you be adding heavy weapons, or abstracting them out?

ShroudFilm - September 19, 2011 03:30 PM (GMT)
I intend to have two heavy weapons per base of Devastators, which means in a squad of ten we'd have 4 heavys, a sergeant and 5 regular marines... which is good enough for me! :D

Apologist - September 23, 2011 01:22 PM (GMT)
Ah, I meant in the Tactical formations – some people have one per five men, whereas others mix it up a bit (I have one per ten men – or every other stand).

Either way, they're coming on nicely. What're your thoughts for the list?

If you can make it up to the weekend, let me know and I'll be happy to give you a game with the Ultramarines :)

Wow some lovely looking models Shroud, and I agree the Peturabo conversion looks great. Look forward to seeing what you finish next.

If you can hang around until next year when I come back to the UK I could give you a game, although we would need some plausible reason why the Iron Warriors would be fighting the World Eaters (beyond it being a bar brawl that escalated or something!) :P

Or a live fire excercise with the IW defending and the WE attacking?

Well both have to practice, don't they?
