Whilst I'm not a fan of the colour, I can't deny how good the paint job is. You've done a really nice job on these Will. Any plans to do a transport for them?

BigWill - July 12, 2011 10:49 AM (GMT)
I was a fan of the color until I have seen Apologists SoH.
If I can find that paint he used I am going to try a test one see if it will be worth stripping and redoing these guys.
Transports and Tanks were done ages ago, going to take an army group shot soon

I am seriously think of selling these guys so I can buy a whole boatload of mkIV armor.

BigWill - July 14, 2011 07:09 PM (GMT)
Here is Tactical V who happens to be hearing the voices of Khorne lately.
The buzzsaw attachmant and the Khorne icon are nice touches

You made me take the leap Apologist,I amredoing my army.
That means selling this one to pay for the new one(which I have already ordered the first 10 tacticals and the paint required

Maratheus - July 15, 2011 06:37 AM (GMT)
So soon? :D
Well anyway, judging by your most recent paintjobs I'd say your work has improved tremendously. Looking forward to see how you tackle the new force.

The Red Sorcerer - July 15, 2011 02:05 PM (GMT)
Always a shame to sell a personalised army - hope you get a good amount of money for it.

Looking at the pics, it seems the first SoH you did are a less lurid colour than the later ones - they seem more of a grey colour and closer to how I imagine the SoH should look. Not sure if this is just the pics or a change in how you painted the armour, but its worth bearing in mind for the next lot.

Apologist - July 15, 2011 03:08 PM (GMT)
Oh cripes! What a shame to be selling them I really like the colour you've got here. :(

If you're not happy with the scheme, aren't you tempted to simply repaint? That'd ensure all your lovely conversion work isn't lost.

BigWill - July 16, 2011 01:00 AM (GMT)
Well most of the army was the old Red Scorp upgrade
If I can get $350 for the army that pays for 30 True Mk4 5 Mk5 Assault the Contemptor and guns for all.
This is the first test mini for the new army using the new color.
What do you guys think Too Light,Too Dark,Just Right

Agreed. Just right.

Lunasteve - July 17, 2011 01:43 AM (GMT)
if i would be honest i would have chosen a darker green myself but... it has really grown on me over the past week or so and partly down to the execution i should add, really nice mate, hope you get what your after.

BigWill - July 17, 2011 07:49 PM (GMT)
Ok here we go again :D
I love painting banner bearers so I did him first.
Keeping with the theme Ancients carry the banner I outfitted him with MkII Crusade Armor.
For the banner I went with the classic Sons banner from the artbooks.
I then used hobby chain, skulls and a custom icon to top it off.
I may change the eye on his belt,I am not loving the yellow on him

Ok had a nice easy day with nothing to do but play Kill Team and paint.
So I finished up the banner bearer.
I am much happier with the new eye on his belt.

Very cool, new colour is great improvement!

BigWill - July 22, 2011 03:55 AM (GMT)
Here is the next member of the command squad the Apothecary
I used Grey knight Termie bits for his backpack and the vials.
It fits almost perfect on the Mk2 backpack
He is still in progress but I wanted to show off the backpack.

Very cool I'm enjoying seeing these develop. I particularly like the glossy red on his belt buckle. What's your technique for that?

King Fluff - July 22, 2011 04:08 PM (GMT)
Looking great - although not too sure about the multicoloured top knots, I much prefer the red :)

You like that do you, just stumbled on to it.
Basecoat a blood red with a blazing orange dot in center.
Then cover with Tamiya Clear Red simple as pie :)

BigWill - July 22, 2011 08:05 PM (GMT)
I finished up the Apothecary,I really like him he came together well.
I used my standard true sons head(chaos lord)
I bought a bunch of termie lord heads to use as unhelmeted members so they all look like Horus.

I really like how your Apothacary turned out! I just love the facial expression with the eyes for some reason...

Dez - July 23, 2011 04:29 AM (GMT)
Great stuff so far, the Apoth is really nice. I love the helmet modelled on to the belt, I did that with one of mine fun stuff.

Pacific - July 23, 2011 06:54 AM (GMT)
Agreed that the colour scheme looks spot on - and the effort you are putting into the heraldry of each marine. And nice touch with the helmet on the buckle of the Apothecary.

BigWill - July 24, 2011 07:11 AM (GMT)
A few of you sent me messages on how I painted my Sons of Horus.
Today I give you the recipe.
You will need the following paints
From Vallejo Panzer Aces line:
Africa Korps Tank Crew(336),Highlight Russ.I Tkcr(329)
From Citadel:
Chaos Black,Boltgun Metal,Scab Red,Blood Red,Scorched Brown,Thrakka Green,Badab Black,Devlin Mud,Asurman Blue
From Tamiya:
Clear Red
Step one give a good solid base coat with Afirca Korps be sure to thin the Vallejo paint well they tend to be thicker than GW in my experience

user posted image

Step two mix equal parts Thraka Green,Delvin Mud,Badab Black,Asurman Blue and water for a wash that you will coat the model with.
Be sure the wash in concentrated more in the cracks and not on the flat plates on his armor

user posted image

Step three use a 50/50 mix of Africa Korps and Russian Highlight use this mix to paint your model carefully leaving the base color at the cracks.
Take your time and use thinner paint and more layers to get a good solid finish
Also paint your blacks and reds at this time so you can use the green mix to fix mistakes
Anything you want as a red gemstone like I am doing on the chest and knees paint Blood Red over the Scab red.

user posted image

Step four paint your metallics with Boltgun Metal and coat the Red gemstones with Tamiya Clear Red.
Paint or decal your unit markings and weapon of choice and you are good to go

user posted image

Step five(optional)use just the Russian Highlight if you want to paint hard edge highlights

Been buzy this weekend.
I repainted the Captain from the old army that is one of my favorite conversions ever.
His armor is the same shade now as the rest of the new army.
I also cranked out two bolter brothersfrom the first squad.

Looking good so far BigWill. I love the shade of green you have on the armor and the red gems. I have one small suggestion if you don't mind. I would consider placing the Dread's left foot back and flat on the floor piece on the base. It looks to me like he is about to lean back with his foot on the rock like that. I realize that you may not have him in the exact final pose after painting, so disregard me if I jumped the gun.

BigWill - July 28, 2011 08:17 PM (GMT)
I hate you
Once you said that I knew it to be true and it was glued.
I repositioned the foot and it is 1000 times better since I was not trying to model a falling Dred.
But If I was...
Infact the paintjob will be better too because I can paint the base separately now.
New Pics soon as I Chaos him up

Doghouse - July 28, 2011 09:44 PM (GMT)
Very nice stuff! These guys are looking great mate. :)

BigWill - July 28, 2011 11:19 PM (GMT)
Now that I got him popped off the base I got silly with it
Spikes,Chains,heads and self sticking disks

Lunasteve - July 29, 2011 10:36 PM (GMT)
loving hat dread mate, really spot on what youve done with the spikes, chain and skulls! seems like youve got a perfect balance between good and bad in all the models to me.

Calas Typhon - July 29, 2011 10:40 PM (GMT)
Great looking dread you have there. But does the aquila that is supose to be on the dread's gorget a option, or did you file that off?

BigWill - July 29, 2011 10:59 PM (GMT)
There a pitcure in the HH artbook that I based this off of.
I had to file it off carefully so as not to damage the rivets.
I hate when Forge World does that, let me add my own iconography.
This model is so much the better since I popped it off the base.
I was then able to paint him like I do my tanks,he's coming out really well.

BigWill - July 30, 2011 04:13 AM (GMT)
Well on his way,I was able to sucessfully scuplt a skinned face for the torso like the picture.
Did a basecoat of Tamiya Hull Red for the primer layer and very lightly sponged on masking fluid.
I then airbrushed him a touch darker than the troops but it will match the tanks when I do them.

The paintjob is finished except for the head.
I have highlighted the damaged chips finished the iconography.
I added VIXI on his other knee which is an ancient Roman prased meaning "I Lived" pastense. I felt perfect for a Dreadnought.
Which is why 17 is an unlucky number in Italy
I am using glosscote for a gloss/satin varnish that I can start using the oil paints on.

The contemptor is looking ace will, the flayed face was a great touch !!!

Maratheus - July 31, 2011 05:37 PM (GMT)
Lovely work so far, the contemptor looks extremely menacing.
Just curious of your method, are you going full on with the Ultrawerke tank painting tutorial or something similar?
If someone doesn't know, it can be found here.

BigWill - August 1, 2011 11:00 AM (GMT)
Nah he is too small for the full monty.
Just ,paint gloss,oil pinwash

Mabrothrax - August 1, 2011 12:13 PM (GMT)
Gotta say that Dread looks sweet! The spikes and weathering really add to an already sexy model. Nice to see some one else using the Scibor ruined faces as well. Love the bases bet they look so OTT as to be almost unusable!

Have you attached the arms? or are they going to be interchangeable with the forthcoming guns 'n' stuff?
