Title: Pre Heresy Battlefleet Gothic
Description: Which ships to use?
malika - May 13, 2011 07:05 PM (GMT)
Since we are currently collecting all sorts of useful information, most of it probably linked to the Epic madness we've been seeing here, I was wondering if you guys could also help me out with this here.
I've been pondering about reviving my interesting in BFG, however... I would love to combine it with the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy era madness. I was wondering if you guys have more info on which ships were available back then.
So maybe we could work on a list of ships, state the era they are from and then also add the source of it. In other words, it would look something like this:
Type of ship - Era (m32 for example) - [source]
Thank you for your time!
EDIT: started on the list:
Emperor Class Battleship - At least m26 (might be older) - [BFG Rulebook (Ships of the Gothic Sector)]
Retribution Class Battleship - Early days of the Imperium (Great Crusade era?) - [BFG Rulebook (Ships of the Gothic Sector)]
Desolator Class Battleship - Very founding of the Imperium (Great Crusade era?) - [BFG Rulebook (Ships of the Gothic Sector)]
Terminus Est (basis for the Despoiler Class Battleship) - pre-Imperial - [BFG: Powers of Chaos]
Apocalypse Class Battleship - pre-Imperial/early-Imperial (predecessor to the Retribution) - [BFG: Imperial Fleets]
Vengeance Class Grand Cruiser - Great Crusade era (ships encountered amongst both Loyalists and Traitors due to the "Great Betrayal") - [BFG: Imperial Fleets]
Ramilies Class Star Fort - used since the earliest days of the Great Crusade - [BFG: Imperial Fleets]
Victory Class Battleship - Great Crusade era - [BFG: Additional Ships Compendium]
Avenger Class Grand Cruiser - M30 - [Fallen Angels]
Lunar Class Cruiser - Crusade era [Battle For The Abyss]
[b]Sword Class Frigate - M30 - [Flight Of The Eisenstein]

Go to the Specialist Games section of the GW site mate, there are downloads for the BFG rules for the ships there and they include details of when they came into service in each description.

Lunar-class battleship - Great Crusade/Early Heresy - [Battle for the Abyss] This one is a bit odd though, since the Lunar Class ship is not a battleship but a cruiser...

the Ramilies is early great crusade era as per page 31 of it's description in the battle fleet armada book
The Vengeance class and the Avenger class grand cruisers may be as well but their fluff is very limited so i cannot say for sure
The Apocalypse class Battleship for sure is though, as it predates the Retribution class Battleship
The Victory class Battleship is also Great Crusade era, as a lone Victory class cleansed an entire system of mutants during this time
The Siluria class light cruiser is also great crusade, maybe even earlier then that

What are the sources? especially for the Victory and Siluria.
TyraelVladinhurst - May 14, 2011 09:04 AM (GMT)
the Victory class battleship is from Battlefleet Gothic 2002 annual, the Siluria on the other hand is from the additional ships compendium

The cleansing of the mutants might not have been during the Great Crusade as it's mentioned that the Victory Class Battleship was used later on as well. As for the Siluria, there isn't any clear info stating it originated during the Great Crusade, only saying it was a predecessor to the Dauntless.

actually it does say it was in use here's the quote "The Conqueror particularly distinguished it self during the Great Crusade to enlighten the galaxy with the Emperor's wisdom after the Age of Strife."

Eclipse class light cruisers were used by the Night Lords during the Horus Heresy as mentioned in The Lion. It might be speculation here but one can assume this type of ship has been around during the Great Crusade as well...

It seems so strange that most of the Chaos ships are from around the 35th millennium. The M41 books make it seem like all of their fleets are from the Heresy, and it would make a lot more sense if they were instead of having so many ancient Imperial ships. I know the BFG source materials are from another era in the gaming fluff but why not retcon it a little?
