Title: Battles of the Great Crusade

Apologist - May 8, 2011 11:23 PM (GMT)
I thought I'd post up a collection of 'canonical' battles of the Great Crusade described by Games Workshop, Black Library and Forge World, to serve as inspiration for peoples' games. This thread covers battles from the Unification of Terra to Isstvan III.

I'll keep it simple: a brief description of the action (i.e. what planet, what forces etc), and then the reference. I'll keep this top post updated if people fancy adding battles - please include references :)

UPDATE: This list is growing quickly! On consideration, I'm snipping out virtually all description beyond name and forces, to keep the list as clean as possible. All relevant information will be in the follow-up posts anyway, so we're not losing info. For that reason, feel free to add as much detail as you can to your posts. Thanks!

Legend
Imperial Forces
Legions identified in full. Titan Legions designated by High Gothic title (e.g. Tempestus, not Storm Lords). Specific Imperial Army units (where identified) designated in parentheses.

Non-Imperial Forces
Xenos identified by specifier in parentheses. e.g. Xenos (Ork)
Human forces split into:
'independent human forces (NAME)', where Compliance was not yet enforced,
or
'rebel human forces (NAME)', where Compliance had been enacted.

Cleansing of Laeran - Emperor's Children vs. Laer: Fulgrim was against a potential alliance between the Imperium and Laer and started a war against them. It was assumed this war would last decades, however Fulgrim and his Legion decimated the Laer within a month. [Fulgrim]

Tesstra Prime - Alpha Legion vs. Independent human forces: Alpha Legion allowed the enemy to dig in and build defenses after which things started to go awry. All sorts of random mistakes were occuring eventually forcing the defenders to surrender. When asked why the Legion had not taken a simpler strategy Alpharius replied that it would have been too easy. Guilliman called it a waste of the Emperor's bolter shells. [IA: Alpha Legion]

Sarosh - Dark Angels vs Independent human faction + warp entity: The Dark Angels fought against the Saroshi who planted a bomb on the Dark Angels' command ship. Later on the Dark Angels fought against a Warp Entity. [Descent of Angels]

The Cleansing of Arrigata - World Eaters, Ultramarines and Sons of Horus versus separatists. Horus wanted the world brought to compliance quickly so he sent the World Eaters to do it. Once the Ultramarines arrived they saw that the World Eaters had massacred the local population. [IA: World Eaters]

The Red Sorcerer - May 9, 2011 11:09 AM (GMT)
Great idea. Have added a bunch of new ones.

Worth mentioning that newer background has a different version of Dulan. Will look it up shortly.

EDIT: Have added Malika's suggestions as well.

EDIT 2: Have updated the more recent version of Dulan. Source is a section of background entitled 'The Lion and the Wolf' that was published in White Dwarf on more than one occasion accompanying Space Wolf background. Could well have been included in one of the older SW Codexes as well.

EDIT 2: Have updated the more recent version of Dulan.

Oops – that might have been lost in the edit I was working on.

(Thanks for the help, by the way :))

Chondax System - White Scars vs. Xenos (Orks). Campaign interrupted due to Rogal Dorn's message that Horus had rebelled. Khan and his Legion ordered back to Terra. [Collected Visions]

Davin - Luna Wolves and Word Bearers vs. Independent (Davinites). [False Gods]

The Red Sorcerer - May 9, 2011 01:03 PM (GMT)
Dulan Space Wolves, Dark Angels vs independant Human forces (Chaos-worshipping). The Tyrant Durath isulted Russ, causing him to demand the right to lead the attack on the fortress. Johnson ignored him and led his own carefully planned attack instead, killing the Tyrant personally. After the battle Russ confronted and attacked Johnson, and the two duelled for a day and a night. Russ eventually stopped attacking, seeing the humour of the situation, at which point Johnson knocked him unconcious. [White Dwarf]

Expanded (recent) version of Dulan.

re. Kobolt - it may be referred to as the 'Kobolt Scrap', but its explicitly mentioned that they were fighting on the Craftworld, which was eventually destroyed due to the Space Wolves. I'd list it in 'named' planets under 'Thuyelsa Craftworld' myself.

EDIT: Took the Emperor out of your Dulan summary. He wasn't there in the newer version - hence why Johnson was in overall command.

Updated.
Also, added Gorro, the world where Horus hacked the arm from an ork attempting to strangle the Emperor.

malika - May 11, 2011 03:39 PM (GMT)
Unknown - Alpha Legions vs. Imperial Fists. Apparently the Alpha Legion already started attacking forces of the other Space Marine Legions well before the Horus Heresy. I don't know how well this background still stands, but it's food for thought. [Codex Chaos Space Marines 3rd Edition]

Arden Fell - May 12, 2011 11:38 AM (GMT)
Wasn't 63-19 part of the Battle for the Whisperhead Mountains, at the start of Horus Rising?

In which case it would be Luna Wolves not Sons of Horus.

ShroudFilm - May 12, 2011 12:32 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (Arden Fell @ May 12 2011, 11:38 AM)
Wasn't 63-19 part of the Battle for the Whisperhead Mountains, at the start of Horus Rising?

Only in as much as the conquest of a planet can be said to be part of a skirmish in a remote geographical location somewhere in the surface...

malika - May 12, 2011 12:51 PM (GMT)
Even so, it was still a conflict that was fought when Horus' Legion was known as the Luna Wolves rather than Sons of Horus.

Arden Fell - May 12, 2011 01:14 PM (GMT)
My humblest appologies, syntexmeister.

What I meant to say was "Wasn't the battle for the Whisperhead Mountain part of the on going compliance of 63-19, fought so gallantly by the Warmaster's finest, Luna Wolves as so beautifully depicted in Horus Rising, so that would mean that it was pre Sons of Horus. :P

Apologist - May 12, 2011 02:25 PM (GMT)
Updated regardless ;)

Does 63-19 have a name mentioned anywhere, even in passing?

malika - May 12, 2011 05:13 PM (GMT)
66:12 - Night Lords vs. enemy. [Blood Reaver] I assume it took place during the Great Crusade, the name sounds too much like a world conquered during the Crusade, it might mean that the Night Lords' 10th Company was part of the 66th Expedition Fleet? However, it was the pacification of that world, meaning that the Night Lords might have turned on it after it was conquered, meaning the event might have taken place during the Heresy or afterwards as well...

Ryle - Night Lords vs. independent human faction [Blood Reaver]

malika - May 18, 2011 07:46 PM (GMT)
Tarsis Ultra - Ultramarines vs. independent human faction. [Warriors of Ultramar]

Piscina - Dark Angels vs. local independent humans. No real battle, Dark Angels were embraced in open arms. I could imagine some skirmishes against resistance fighters though. [Angels of Darkness]

Reillis - Imperial forces vs. unknown opponent. I left out the Luna Wolves since it might have been very possible that Horus wasn't given command of his Legion yet since he might have been "too young". [Realms of Chaos - Lost and the Damned]

Algrim Whitefang - October 20, 2011 12:26 AM (GMT)
Shi'Hu'Gal Purge – The Legios Vulcanum I (Dark Fire) & Legio Vulcanum II supported the (then-loyal) Night Lords Legion during the infamous xenocidal purge of the Shi'Hu'Gal Dominion during the Great Crusade; a campaign of such fury and viciousness it remains a legend of the Great Crusade, even after the Warmaster’s betrayal. A thrice-cursed Chaos Warhound Venataris Mori (last reported to be seen at the Siege of Vraks in 813-840.M41), was known to have been present during this campaign. [Imperial Armour Vol. 6 – Siege of Vraks II, p. 182

When I saw this topic, I imidiately thought of the back cover of the original (epic) Space Marine games box (1989) here is a collection of illustrations of Battle banners/flags + a few short stories,
on these battle banners there are names of worlds, where the legions have fought, names like Rynn and Badlanding wich are also mentioned in Rouge Trader as worlds names. I have also quickly looked through the rule booklet, but surpricingly theres not mention of named worlds there.

A few of the names are sadly unreadable.

Later I will look through the Codex Titanicus, Adeptus Titanicus and WD's from those years for information.

Here I have listed first the world name and then the legions associated with the name.

Rhetori III: Ultra Marines and Thousand Sons.

Arco: BLood Angels, Ultra Marines, White Scars, Salamanders, Emperor's Children.

Kantim: BLood Angels, Space Wolves, Dark Angels, Death Guard.

Considered the first great battle of the Great Crusade, the compliance of Luna.

Luna compliance - Part of the VIIth Legion (Imperial Fists), part of the XIIIth Legion (Ultramarines), plus the entirety of the XVIth Legion (Luna Wolves).
This battle led the 16th Legion being named Luna Wolves.

Cerberus Insurrection - XIIth Legion, the War Hounds; Terran XXIInd Dracos Regiment.
Cerberus was a hollowed-asteroid prison colony, most likely within the Sol system. 'Pacified' by the War Hounds during the time of the first Expeditionary fleets.
