Title: Battles of the Horus Heresy

Apologist - May 8, 2011 11:02 PM (GMT)
I thought I'd post up a collection of 'canonical' battles of the Horus Heresy described by Games Workshop, Black Library and Forge World, to serve as inspiration for peoples' games. This thread should be used to record battles from the Triumph at Ullanor to the end of the Scouring. The more obscure references, the better!

I'll keep it simple: a brief description of the action (i.e. what planet, what forces etc), and then the reference. I'll keep this top post updated if people fancy adding battles - please include references :)

UPDATE: This list is growing quickly! On consideration, I'm snipping out virtually all description beyond name and forces, to keep the list as clean as possible. All relevant information will be in the follow-up posts anyway, so we're not losing info. For that reason, feel free to add as much detail as you can to your posts. Thanks!

Legend
Legions identified in full.
Titan Legions designated by High Gothic title (e.g. Tempestus, not Storm Lords) where possible, otherwise identified with quotation marks ''. With large deployments of Titan Legions, specific Legions are designated in parentheses.
Specific Army units (where identified) designated in parentheses.

Other Forces
Xenos identified by specifier in parentheses. e.g. Xenos (Ork)
Human groups that secede or remain neutral identified as 'independent human forces (NAME)'.

malika - May 9, 2011 11:29 AM (GMT)
Mars - Imperial Fists, Imperial Army (Saturnine Hoplites and Jovian Grenadiers) vs. Adeptus Mechanicus. Adeptus Mechanicus forces loyal to Horus eventually managed to drive off Loyalists from Mars, but not before the Imperial Fists took 12.000 suits of power armour with them. [Mechanicum, Collected Visions]

Phall - Imperial Fists vs. Iron Warriors. Naval battle won by the Iron Warriors. [Collected Visions]

Lord Commander Lucius - May 9, 2011 11:44 AM (GMT)
If you take Garro: OoM literally, then there is also at least one titan and some Imperial Army loyalists on Isstvan III. Can't rememeber the titan's name right now.

malika - May 9, 2011 11:55 AM (GMT)
Titans were deployed during the Battle of Istvaan III, that was already mentioned in the previous HH novels.

malika - May 9, 2011 12:06 PM (GMT)
more battles:

Molech - 3 Titan Legions and +100 Imperial Army Regiments vs. Traitor forces. Knights of ruling Household (House Devine) are seduced by Slaanesh and turn traitor. Only 1 in 100 Imperial soldiers survive. This battle created the needed opening for Horus to march on to the Sol system. [WD 190]

Mars - Legio Tempestus vs Legio Mortis. Legio Mortis wins, destroying Legio Tempestus. [Mechanicum]

The Red Sorcerer - May 9, 2011 12:19 PM (GMT)
Again, great idea. Have updated first post.

Arden Fell - May 9, 2011 12:28 PM (GMT)
The Dies Irae was deployed with several others during Istvaan III.

Not as obscure but if we are talking about chronological order from Ullanor, we need to have

"Battle for Whisperhead Mountains" 63-19 : Luna Wolves, Byzant Janizars vs rebel army & chaos deamons

"Murder" 140-20 : Luna Wolves, Emperor's Children, Blood Angels vs Mega Arachnids - This would start off with just the BA as they were pretty much wiped out, then a rescue party of EC & LW.

"Interex Prime" : small Luna Wolves party vs Interex Army - would make an interesting street battle scenario.

All from Horus Rising and False God (I think).

The Red Sorcerer - May 9, 2011 12:33 PM (GMT)
Arden, those are pre-Heresy battles, included in the 'Battles of the Great Crusade' thread below this one.

;)

Technically, of course, they aren't - the Great Crusade itself ends at Ullanor. Still, the division of Heresy battles and Pre-Heresy battles works, so we may as well keep the threads as they are for the moment.

Arden Fell - May 9, 2011 12:36 PM (GMT)
I thought that Ullanor was the battle against the Orks, early doors?

So are we starting after Horus re-awakens after Davin?

My bad didn't notice the Pre-Heresy thread.

It's one of those days I'm afraid.

malika - May 9, 2011 12:41 PM (GMT)
Tallarn - Alpha Legion vs. White Scars. [IA: Alpha Legion]

Yarant - Alpha Legion vs. Space Wolves. [IA: Alpha Legion]

Scouring of Gilden’s Star - Blood Angels vs. Word Bearers. Classic Land Raider vs. Land Raider battle. [Space Marine 1st edition]

Defense of Gramercie in the Sangraal campaign - Crimson Fists vs. Traitor forces. Note that in the old background the Crimson Fists fought during the Horus Heresy. I guess this could be translated as a separate company/chapter of the Imperial Fists instead. [Space Marine 1st edition]

Tallarn - Dark Angels (4th company) vs. Traitor forces. [Space Marine 1st edition]

Meramar on Thedarc II - Space Wolves + Imperial forces vs. Traitor forces. [Space Marine 1st edition]

Treab’s World - Salamanders vs. Death Guard [Space Marine 1st edition]

Baztel 3 - Space Wolves vs. Emperor's Children. [Space Marine 1st edition]

The Red Sorcerer - May 9, 2011 12:50 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure I'd include battles mentioned in really old background, unless there's been some mention since. After all, if they were mentioned before they had even settled on the names of the First Founding Legions (i.e. the Crimson Fist battle) they've likely been removed from the background.

QUOTE

Ullanor was when the Big E returned to Earth and appointed Horus Warmaster. Technically its the end of the Great Crusade, which only covers the period the Emperor himself led the Imperial Forces.

malika - May 9, 2011 01:15 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't discard them that quickly. Most of the epic material is closely connected to the older background since...well...Epic background hasn't been updated since these old editions. There are some oddities between the old material and current material, but I don't think we couldn't resolve that.

I agree – it's clear Black Library have tabs on the old material as 1st ed. Space Marine is where a lot of current background comes from: Davin, Isstvan, Saul Tarvitz, Garro, the Eisenstein etc.

Also, it's the one source that grabs the scale of the Heresy, with forces fighting everyone, not just the 'classic' scraps.

The Red Sorcerer - May 9, 2011 01:52 PM (GMT)
Fair enough. At least the source will make it clear that its old background.

Stygies VIII Forgeworld, had two Titan Legions formed there due to its proximity to the Eye of Terror (Legio Vulcanum I and Legio Vulcanum II). During the heresy these Legions defected to Horus and were involved in a longrunning battle with Loyalist elements on their homeworld. Eventually both Legions were defeated with the aid of Eldar from Saim Hann and fled to the Eye of Terror at the end of the Heresy. [Adeptus Titanicus]

malika - May 9, 2011 02:05 PM (GMT)
Diamat - Dark Angels and Imperial Army (Tanagran Dragoons) vs. Sons of Horus + Traitor Guard. [Fallen Angels]

Dagonet - Officio Assessinorum and Loyalist freedom fighters vs. Sons of Horus and Traitor forces. [Nemesis]

The Red Sorcerer - May 9, 2011 02:10 PM (GMT)
@Malika: Already listed! :D

Apologist - May 9, 2011 03:16 PM (GMT)
Updated.

This'll make a great reference for anyone looking for unusual match-ups :)
Also – everyone is at Tallarn! :D

Where do the Night Lords and Dark Angels clash again?

malika - May 9, 2011 03:23 PM (GMT)
@Apologist: The Night Lords and Dark Angels fought at Tsagualsa. [Savage Weapons - Age of Darkness]

Note that the Iron Warriors contributed during the Siege of Terra, at least it is being hinted to in various sources (forgot the names though). In Throne of Lies one of the Night Lord character remarks that the last time (before Uriah III) they deployed as much armor/artillery was during the Siege of Terra. I don't know if the marine simply mentioned armor in general or Night Lords forces.

Also, you forgot to add the Alpha Legion vs. Space Wolves battle at Yarant.

malika - May 10, 2011 11:35 AM (GMT)
Chondax - Alpha Legion vs. Space Wolves and White Scars. White Scars become forced to leave the Space Wolves behind as they move to Terra. I assume it's a naval battle. [Collected Visions]

Gethamon - Alpha Legion vs. Imperial Army. Alpha Legion Predators slaughter Imperial Army. [Imperial Armour VI: The Siege of Vraks II]

Apologist - May 10, 2011 01:23 PM (GMT)
Brill – updated.

Do you chaps think this would be more useful if we included their Expeditionary index code?
e.g.
Generico (Twenty-three fourteen) – [battle details]

malika - May 10, 2011 01:28 PM (GMT)
I think the Expedition Fleets would make sense for the Great Crusade, not so much the Horus Heresy since Horus' rebellion kind of ended the Great Crusade and Expedition Fleets.

It might come in handy for the Great Crusade, but note that the only info on the Expedition Fleets comes from the Horus Heresy novels, all the other sources won't have such data. :(

malika - May 10, 2011 03:23 PM (GMT)
Another battle to add!

Dwell - Sons of Horus vs. White Scars and Iron Hands. [Little Horus - Age of Darkness]

malika - May 11, 2011 10:04 AM (GMT)
Unknown - Legio Vulturus (Traitors) vs. Legio Gryphonicus and Legio Victorum (Loyalists). Titans of Legio Vulturus had turned their weapons against the Loyalists mid-battle, destroying nigh on forty Titans during the battle. [Dark Creed]

Anvilus IX - Traitors vs. Loyalists. Land Raider production planet, fell to the Traitors. [Imperial Armour 10: The Badab War Part 2]

The Red Sorcerer - May 11, 2011 10:14 AM (GMT)
Don't think it needs the Expedition Fleets listed - there's already a thread that details the fleets and where they were involved (see the FAQ).

Have added this thread and the Crusade Battles thread to the FAQ - good work all!

malika - May 11, 2011 10:54 PM (GMT)
According to Adeptus Titanicus (1st edition) the Fire Wasps Titan Legion fought for the Loyalists at Terra.

malika - May 12, 2011 07:35 AM (GMT)
Paramar - Legio Ignatum vs. Legio Mortis. [Titan Legions]

Stygies III - Loyalists + Xenos (Eldar of the Siam Hann Craftworl) + Legio Vulcanum + Traitor forces. [Titan Legions]

malika - May 12, 2011 08:23 AM (GMT)
Please remove Stygies III, the last one I posted. It's supposed to be Stygies VIII, but that one was already posted. Sorry! My bad! :(

malika - May 18, 2011 07:48 PM (GMT)
Luna - Loyalists vs. Traitors. [Realms of Chaos - Lost and the Damned]

Istvaan system might have been known as the "Savage Worlds". It was mentioned in the Reams of Chaos books that Horus was gathering his forces in the "Savage Worlds", that could be the Istvaan system?

The Red Sorcerer - May 26, 2011 12:09 PM (GMT)
Couple more. Big ones these!

Eskrador - Ultramarines vs Alpha Legion, rebel army. The Ultramarines assault the Alpha Legion in a heavily mountainous area, with Guilliman apparently killing Alpharius when the two meet in combat following a lightning assault on the Alpha Legions command post. However they suffer heavy casualties following this, and are forced to withdraw and bombard the planet from orbit. (source - Index Astartes Alpha Legion).

Sebastus IV, 'Eternal Fortress' - Imperial Fists, Ultramarines vs Iron Warriors. The 'Iron Cage' incident, where the IF assaulted a well prepared trap, suffering massive casualties until reinforced by the Ulramarines. Peturabo becomes a Demon Prince following the battle. (Source - Index Astartes IW & IF)

EDIT: Worth noting the Iron Warriors were at Terra as well. Its mentioned in their Index Astartes, and quite frankly it would be rather farcical if they weren't - they were the pre-eminent Siege Legion of the Traitors, and its pretty much the culmination of the whole Dorn/Peturabo siege rivalry...

malika - May 26, 2011 03:03 PM (GMT)
These didn't really take place during the Horus Heresy but happened afterwards. ;)

The Red Sorcerer - May 26, 2011 03:54 PM (GMT)
Eskrador is noted (in the IA) as occurring when the Ultras were on their way to Terra at the beginning of the Heresy. The Iron Cage is after Guilliman proposes the Codex Astartes but before it is adopted by the Legions, so comes around the end of the Scouring.

Apologist's first post says we should be aiming for battles up until the end of the Scouring itself, so they both fall within the right timescale... :P

malika - May 26, 2011 04:10 PM (GMT)
But the Horus Heresy occured a couple of years after the Triumph at Ullanor, meaning it would become very confusing since technically this is still the Great Crusade.

But ok, also Scouring battles huh?

The Red Sorcerer - May 26, 2011 04:37 PM (GMT)
Doesn't seem too confusing - one thread for everything up to Istvaan (I think technically the Great Crusade ended at Ullanor when the Emp returned to Terra, but I can't immediately recall where that is stated - it can certainly be considered over once Horus rebells!). Then another thread from Istvaan up to the end of the Scouring and the Second Founding. All the Legion on Legion action in one handy thread :D . After all, the Scouring is effectively (even if not in name) part of the Heresy, seeing as it involves the Loyalists reclaiming all the planets that rose up and purging the Imperium of the Traitors.

malika - May 26, 2011 04:43 PM (GMT)
But what about all the stuff that happened between Ullanor and Istvaan? The Emperor's sons were still conquering the stars for him under command of Warmaster Horus. I think it would be more fitting to set the Great Crusade from the Unification Era until Istvaan III with the Horus Heresy beginning at Istvaan III and ending with Horus' death. The Great Scourging takes place in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy and ends with the Second Founding.

The Red Sorcerer - May 26, 2011 04:57 PM (GMT)
Thats why the 'Battles of the Great Crusade' thread covers up until Istvaan III.

I think having three 'Battles' threads is a little excessive. And many of the 'heresy' battles we have, particularly from older background, could well have been during the Scouring anyway.

If the majority of folks think it makes sense to have a seperate 'Scouring' thread, fair enough. Personally I think it makes sense to keep the Heresy and Scouring together, particularly seeing as we don't really have many canon examples of Scouring battles yet. They are, after all, the same war - the Heresy is the Traitors offensive and attack on Terra, and the Scouring is the Loyalists counter-offensive to take back what they had lost.

malika - August 24, 2011 08:27 PM (GMT)
Maybe not have a separate Scourging thread, but maybe mark them out? If we mark them, we could fuse this thread together with the one of the Great Crusade, simply use three colours to determine what era.

I'm quite curious which of these battles happened during the Scouring...
