In the wake of Horus’s defeat and the failed siege of Terra, the Imperium’s wounded armies started a long and bloody war against the Warmaster’s forces, driving them from Imperial space. These grim days were later referred to by Imperial scholars as The Great Scouring, an action that saw the Imperium regain
lost territories step after bloody step. It wasn’t an easy task as even broken and
beaten the traitor Legions still caused anarchy whenever and wherever they could. Thus happened with the world of Johnnus III, a world that had declared with the Emperor as soon as news of the Heresy reached the planet...

News of an impending assault reached the governor of Johnnus III; the brutal Iron Warriors Legion and their bloodthirsty maniac brothers of the World Eaters had arrived en mass to capture the world. On top of these grim news, fully half of the Imperial armoured regiments turned against their own and acceded to the traitor’s side, their cannons blasting apart fortresses and hive cities alike, before the might of the World Eaters left them a lifeless husk. The Governor marshalled what forces he could to his cause and sent a distress signal with highest priority to nearby space.

After three bloody months, salvation appeared to have unexpectedly arrived in the form of the Blood Angels Legion. The vengeful sons of the martyred angel Sanguinius, came to the aid of Johnnus’ III people, taking over general command and mustering the Imperial forces for an attack at the enemy headquarters. Lightning fast, the assault quickly reached the entrenched traitors, blood thundered in the warrior’s veins malice and hatred were harnessed to a battle rage and a fierce battle was about to begin...

Under the stern leadership of Librarian brother Ixius, a veteran of the Great Crusade now encased in the adamantium hull of a dreadnought, and revered Reclusiarch Annellus, the loyalist army surged forwards intent on annihilating the hated traitors. Far across the other side of the battlefield Basilisk carriages rotated and angled for kill shots, Manticore and Executioner cannons primed and acquired targets, hefty man portable lascannons set their sights on enemy vehicles and World Eaters howled in anticipation of the brutal melee. Punishing fire erupted in the traitor’s lines intent on pinning the hated troops, so that the main force could arrive mostly unscathed. Librarian Ixius leapt forwards born aloft on mighty crimson wings and flanked by combat squad Scipio in their Baal pattern rhino, its mighty cannons roaring as it surged forwards. Sergeant Amdeus was there also, accompanied by Reclusiarch Annellus and Sanguinary Priest Mercatto, in their Rhino APC Nemesis, the vehicle’s name redubbed after the siege of Terra.

Despite the opening salvo from the Imperial tanks, the Iron Warriors, masters of trench warfare took the brunt with relentless determination, going to ground where needed thus minimising their losses, much to the fury of the desperate Imperials. When the time had come, Astartes rose from trench parapets, bringing mighty lascannons to bear, Olympian Auxilia and turncoat Johnnus’ III tanks opened up on the enemy, incandescent beams of fire streaking towards the loyalists, plasma blasts and earthshaker rounds blasting the very earth apart. It was by the traitor’s fire that Ixius perished, his mighty form shot from the sky by an incandescent lascannon beam. His deeds were many and glorious and the Reclusiarch Annellus sent Legion serfs to retrieve what remained of the sarcophagus and the hero within. But the fight had just started and many more would die before the end drew near. Iron Warriors bikers leapt forwards towards the enemy line, meltaguns targeting the command chimera of Johnnus’ III most brilliant general. Superheated subatomic beams hit the chimera’s engine compartment immobilising it and leaving it vulnerable to the bikers, who immediately used krak grenades, thus triggering an explosion but not before the passengers within could bail out; of the crew none escaped the blast...

Seeing the Imperial officer and his retinue left out in the open and soon prey for the bikers and their vicious leader, Scipio ordered his Baal Rhino ‘Charon’ onwards, intent on ramming the bikers and then burst out, bolters blazing. Seeing the tank coming close, one of the meltagunners took carefull aim with his weapon and punched a hole in ‘Charon’ rupturing fuel lines and melting critical systems, thus leaving the proud tank a burning, smoking shell. Squad Scipio quickly exited their transport, cursing the traitors, and lining up for assault. Together with the Officer’s command squad, their fire claimed the lives of almost all of the bikers, leaving only the hated Captain and his Sergeant. Scipio pulled his gladius from its scabbard and together with his battle brothers assaulted the Iron Warriors, their Primarch’s name on their lips. All the while the first chimera transport to reach the enemy lines disgorged its cargo, all veterans of the previous battles, now learned in the traitor’s tactics. The hardened veterans opened up with their meltaguns, hitting the Olympian Auxilia Executioner tank and destroying the main turret’s plasma accelerator and its lascannon, thus leaving it without its primary weapons. More fire from the loyalist tanks claimed the defected Leman Russ’s battle cannon, while streaking from the ravaged skies, land speeder 'Fury' made a rigorous atmospheric entry, landing on a hill overlooking the manticore’s side armour. Twin rockets blasted on the manticore but its armour held, the crew now setting up for firing the storm eagle rockets.

Between this punishing exchange of fire sergeant Scipio and his squad, backed up by Sanguinary Priest Argento, managed to drag the sergeant from his bike and slay him but couldn’t lay their hands on the captain who cut down two of the Blood Angels. Nevertheless Argento and squad Scipio closed in on the captain, blades drawn and ready. More gunfire erupted from the traitor lines, the manticore unleashing a deadly payload on the veterans who harmed ‘Invigilus’, blasting them to bits and leaving the rest broken and in full retreat. ‘Invigilus’ and it’s brother tank both retreated to secondary positions, and from the right flank a traitor Valkyrie flew towards the enemy formations. Blow after bloody blow, the Iron Warrior captain slew Argento and one more Blood Angel, routing their remaining brethren who changed their tactical approach and headed off to their objective.

Seeing that the first veteran squad had broken and tucked tail and ran before the entrenched enemy, another chimera spurned forward, yet more veterans in its belly to support the Imperial cause. Annellus ordered squad Amdeus to follow him and quickly started scaling the ramparts of the target landing pad, wishing to clear the objective from heretic scum. Amdeus followed him as did Mercatto, but the rest of the squad found enemy fire too thick to wade through and did not make it to the top. Land speeder ‘Fury’ opened up again, this time with its Multi-melta too and made short work of the Olympian Manticore, destroying its targeting arrays, rendering the mighty missiles useless. The Imperial Executioner fired more plasma blasts to the Iron Warriors, but the well drilled and experienced Astartes got to ground, yet again suffering minimal losses. Amongst the ruin and deafening blasts, Annellus charged the World Eaters, who fought back with fury unbound, but the Emperor smiled upon his servants and the World Eater’s tactical squad and leading captain were cut to pieced before the righteous fury of the sons of Sanguinius. Things now looked pretty grim for the traitors, the Blood Angels’ gambit having started to pay off. However, the Iron Warriors were not weakling men to turn and run and their savage allies, the World Eaters had not even thought about the prospect of retreating, already assembling their true might for a counter assault. Thus the Biker Captain chanted his Legion’s motto and charged forwards on to the remaining Astartes, slaying Scipio and his Brother, and then on to the fleeing group of veterans, cutting them down in a flurry of well placed blows. Now the loyalists had no hold of their strategic area and on top of that, a raging monster stalked their battle line...

Annellus and his squad, regrouped right bellow the landing pad, readying themselves for another devastating assault, but ‘Invigilus’ suddenly trundled in their flank, spitting incandescent plasma fire from its sponsons. Worse still, the ever basilisk enemy fire hit the Imperial Excecutioner but its blessed armour held firm. ‘Fury’s’ missile pods howled again, but the gnner had poor sight of ‘Invigilus’ and so the missiles scattered wide, exploding on the ramparts and already ravaged ground. The Imperial chimera, trudged forwards, releasing its cargo; the Veterans readied their meltabombs and charged the Executioner and Leman Russ, finally destroying ‘Invigilus’ and shaking the crew of the turncoat Leman Russ.

The traitor Bassilisk, fired an earthshaker round on the massing Blood Angels and Veterans, slaying more than half of Squad Amdeus and causing equal casualties on the Veterans, who waited in the shadow of the proud Blood Angels. The traitor Valkyrie surged forwards, on howling engines, landing on the Imperial drop zone, yet again proving that the battle’s outcome hang on the slightest balance. More fire took its toll on Squad Amdeus, slaying the sergeant and his men and leaving only the Reclusiarch and the Sanguinary priest Mercatto to salvage what they could of this predicament. A Specialist trooper squad materialised near the landing pad, taking cover in the shadow of ‘Nemesis’ whilst Imperial tanks retaliated and this time more Iron Warriors fell to enemy fire, but they held firm still securing their set objective. The biker Captain surged forwards to charge the Specialists but a lucky blow from the sergeant’s power weapon sent his bike crashing and end over end, leaving him wounded enough for the specialists to carve him up at their leisure...

‘Fury’ shot its missile pod and its vaporiser cannon at the traitor Valkyrie, managing to penetrate its engines, pinning the aircraft to the ground. Reclusiarch Annellus and High Priest Mercatto faced down the World Eaters and charged, but they just couldn’t land a telling blow to anyone. The World Eaters found themselves confronting superior enemies and they too could not harm the Blood Angels. All the while the remaining Veterans and the Specialist troopers climbed their way up to the landing pad where they saw in utter desperation the World Eaters finally overwhelming the two proud individuals, slaying them brutally in a welter of blood and red viscera. Retaliating fire from the Imperial Executioner felled more Iron Warriors, finally slaying sergeant Lycon and leaving only his second in command, Charon, to guard the objective with grim determination, despite the closing enemy troops...

‘Fury’s’ engines howled in agony as its driver landed it on top of the landing pad, intent on disembarking and taking the fight to the remaining traitor Astartes along with his brother. So did the last of the Imperial troops, forming up for an assault. The Iron Warrior, last of his Squad, embarked on his Rhino ‘Ferrata Victrix’ and opened up with his bolter on the remaining Veterans. The last World Eaters howled in adulation and prepared to charge or be charged, it mattered not so long as they could fight bloody hand t hand...

This battle did not al last determine the outcome of the war for the spent Blood Angels and Imperials did not get the upper hand, and the Iron Warriors and World Eaters forces did not capitulate any ground to their foes. A stalemate would surely ensue, ensuring that many more bloody battles would need to be fought for wrestling control of this planet...

All the Blood Angels mentioned above were merely wounded, in spite what the traitor scum telling the story would have you believe! :P

It was tons of fun, you can expect a HH summer campaign from the hallowed and bloody halls of Underworld games as soon as i'm done with the army.

Cheers! :)

Great report, guys! Sounds like a tense game between some beautiful armies; and I love the photography. :)

We would have had more -and better- pics for you guys if we could just stop laughing and yelling for a moment. Some of the pics I and Dargor took were blurry to say the least.

Aparrently it can be a bit tricky trying to take a decent shot whilst shouting: BLOOD FOR THE EMPEROR, SKULLS FOR THE GOLDEN THRONE, LUPERCAL LUPERCAL, and other such gibberish!
