Title: No! I'm Alpharius!
Description: A True Scale AL Blog

Yvraith - March 29, 2011 09:27 PM (GMT)
Although I realise I have posted the first pics of these guys in my other blog.
I felt that they really deserve a place of their own.
(I would also like to thank Apologist for the inspiration.)

As of yet I'm undecided on which Codex I'm going to use.
I was originally going to use Codex: Space Marines,
using Scouts to represent the Legion's operatives.

Then last week while GS-ing in my LFGS, one of the staff member suggested maybe using the new GK codex.
With my TS marines counting as Paladins & taking Cortez to gain the operatives.
"Sort of like minor movie marines" was his exact quote.

Here are the first 5, sans paint.
There is still a couple of minor GS things to do on one or two,
but you'll get the idea.

Sorry for the pic quality as they are taken with my iPhone.

Really nice start dude.

Looking forward to seeing them with their weapons.

Looking great so far! Looks like you have got the proportions just about right, without making it look stretched in certain locations (which would be my common complaint with some true-scale attempts).

Choosing an army list is going to be difficult.
Do you have an idea of what ratio you want marines to operatives? If you want a higher number of the latter, I would recommend FW IA either 9 or 10, the lists let you use both marines and humans, and some pretty interesting options.

Very nice stuff mate, they are looking great!

MrBojab - March 31, 2011 08:02 AM (GMT)
They look fantastic, I have a very minor adjustment, the marine that is loading the bolter in the second picture, the green stuff behind the shin is not very flush with the armour plate. However it is barely noticeable, especially once it is painted so don't worry. :)

Cheers
MrBojab

-Edit-
As for the armylist Id probably go for Codex SM and Sicarius for a infiltrating tactical squad.

Wow, I didn't realise that it had been so long since I posted anything in here.
Well the motivation is slowly coming back.

Well, my army list has gone through various incarnations.
I toyed with a C:SM scout heavy list, a C:GK list with Corteaz & lots of warrior squads, even a C:SW army with 3 full Squads of Wolf scouts & a Battle Leader with the Saga of the Hunter.

But funnily enough in a discussion with a Imp. Guard player at my LFGS, they suggested that I use C:SM and use Korsarro Khan (on foot) as my HQ.
Allowing nearly all of my army to Outflank.... :D
After a play test with it I liked the way it plays, so for now with some minor tweaking he'll be the HQ of choice.

And to prove that I haven't been completely idle, here are some WIP shots (with poor lighting)<_< of me trying to get the armour colour to match the armour colour on the cover of Legion.

The one on the left is at the full shadow/wash stage & awaiting the base colour.

More shots to follow once I get around to adding some details.
The only thing I'm not sure about is the helmet lens colour, do I go Red like on the cover or do I do them green to match some of the legion markings?????

Calas Typhon - July 27, 2011 02:27 AM (GMT)
I would go with the green. It's a better contrast and it looks good.

Noserenda - July 27, 2011 01:02 PM (GMT)
Great work mate, id go for Red lenses, Green does not show up well on blue/indigo

Gagoc TheAncient - July 27, 2011 06:24 PM (GMT)
Orange is a good contrast for Blue.

Okay no more on the painting front yet, (damn you Infinity!), but I do have the rest of my first Tactical Squad nearly finished & my Captain model pretty much fully modelled & GS'd.

I'm still undecided whether to go with a Mk4 helmet like the rest of the army, or make all of my HQ's & Sgt's bare headed, what do you think?

I say helmeted as they are Alphas. Gives them more of a 'faceless' quality.

lord_caldera - November 7, 2011 06:57 PM (GMT)
I agree with helmed. That plasma cannon is wicked cool, I love the conversion!

eFTy - November 8, 2011 03:01 AM (GMT)
Definitely helmeted. Alphas should never show their faces. :P

Keep up the awesome work!

Noserenda - November 8, 2011 05:57 PM (GMT)
Fantastic Work dude!

Id actually go with a bare head for the captain, i originally modelled several of my characters to "Blend in" and they really suffer for it, Character models should stand and be recognised! The lack of a helmet is a good choice when the character at hand can be wearing fancy la de da cloaks etc ;)

One tip is trying to use the same bare head across the army whenever you can, use that as "Alpharius's" :ph43r:

cypher104 - November 9, 2011 02:32 AM (GMT)
Wow, these are awesome! Makes me think i need to get my act together and get working harder on true scale stuff!

These look great as Alpha's. The captains pose is cool too.

On the head point, while bare heads make characters stand out, i can't help but think that a marine in all his fancy armour wouldn't wander around the battlefield with no helmet on, and risk getting shot in the face...

Apologist - November 9, 2011 09:31 AM (GMT)
Looking fantastic, cat the poses are good and the greenstuff work is lovely and clean. It's also great to see the attention to detail on keeping uniformity across the Legion.

My tuppence on bareheadedness: for visual effect, having a bare head looks good. It doesn't make military sense, but then these are eight-foot tall space knights that hit each other with chainsaws. Aesthetics is all.

That said, I'm not a fan of all officers being bareheaded while all troopers are helmed. It looks too contrived and neat, which should be avoided to get a sense of a swirling battle. Therefore, I'd keep helmets on a proportion of the marines whether they be officer or line Astartes perhaps one bare head to every seven helmed?

For the Alpha Legion in particular, have you considered keeping the bare-headed ones anonymous by using the respirator/osmotic gill heads? That way you could show that all of their skin colours, hair styles, eye colours etc. are similar, further pressing home the point; without completely unmasking them.

There's a particularly cool bare head with respirator from the Land Speeder sprue, that comes with a little communications deely.
