We have been betrayed

It has been so long since I have been able to articulate my thoughts.
We were the force that reunited humanity. The foundations of this empire were built on our work. Our bodies are its bricks, our blood it’s mortar, our pain it’s birthing cry, and it is being handed to scribes and taxmen whilst our Emperor turns his back and discards us like a broken shield.

Well we will not stand and see this happen. My eyes have been opened by the Red Angel and now I see the truth it turns my stomach. The death of my brothers is meaningless? The blood we have spilled for this “false” Emperor will not go unremembered.

A fuse was lit at Istvaan and we follow the path it has laid out for us across the galaxy to Terra. Every death is on His hands, every drop of blood spilled is on His conscience.
This will be hard. Hard and dangerous. We will fight, and we will die. But we will succeed.

There are many worlds between us and the Betrayer, but we are the World Eaters and death follows in every footstep.

Greetings fellow gamers

This is the first time I've decided to actually blog the construction of an army, and since a friend (if your reading this then hello Phil!) and I are planning to go to the Throne of Skulls next year we thought we'd jump on the Heresy era bandwagon.
After many discussions and browsing of codecii it was decided-Phil would field Luther's Dark Angels and I would field Angron's boys in white.

Now I'm not one of those who can build things straight from the box. Everything has to have some conversion work done to it (for examples see my IG army here)
So what to do to make the World Eaters stand out? Make them bigger of course!
I've got to thank the many people who've pioneered the truescale/artscale look for the inspiration, and hope that my interpritation will in some way inspire others.

Anyway lets start with the list itself.
I'll be using the Space Wolf Codex as I think that this best represents the World Eaters after Istvaan, but before they all became frothing loonies. Plus it let me field the entire army in drop pods!

Captain Vortigern-[wolf lord] TDA, 2x Chainfists
-4x Devourers [wolfguard] TDA, Frostblade
-Drop pod

Dreadnought-Assault cannon
-Drop pod

Ravager squad [10 grey hunters] 2xmelta gun
-Drop pod
Ravager squad [10 grey hunters] 2xmelta gun
-Drop pod
Ravager squad [10 grey hunters] 2xplasma gun
-Drop pod
Ravager squad [10 grey hunters] 2xflamer
-Drop pod

Destroyer squad [5 long fangs] 4xmissile launcher
-Devourer [wolf guard] TDA, cyclone missile launcher
-Drop pod

Now onto the photo's

I'm still undecided on the basing for the army, so I'll probably get them all to the "finished" state and then base them all together for consistancy.

First squad is finished

Hell year !!!!!!!!!! like them truscale is wonderfull, when its done so good as you did :D The variant of truescaling with termi bits is a very respectfull decision, because its not easy to convert them .

Your Dread is amazing, really nice work . I hope we will see more of this force.

Two critic points: Maybye you coud use more diffrent heresy styled helms.
You shoud remove the flash ( the last pic, the marine who is painted, the bolter)

Keep up the good work , woud love to see some vehicles as well ;)

great start mate! looking really great, well worth the effort when you see the results at the end of it, wanna see that dread painted now mate :)

Very nice, welcome to the boards! Looks a lot like some stuff I've been working on, too. Your scaling works well.

Dez - October 3, 2010 02:26 PM (GMT)
Wow, really nice. I'm especially fond of the weapon conversions.

Besides what was mentioned, I noticed one other thing that might be improved. I think the hips are too narrow on the Dread.

Apologist - October 3, 2010 09:44 PM (GMT)
Masterful! I love the marines - they're brilliantly converted and painted; and the fluff's fun, too :)

Twin Chainfists on a Terminator is going to look great!

malika - October 3, 2010 09:44 PM (GMT)
Add some chainmail to their armour here and there! Instead of normal loincloths for example.

The plasma and meltaguns are very interesting, I'm very curious how you would do an actual heavy weapon then!

What about adding more bare headed marines in there, but with more blood thirsty faces, like the one from the Khorne Berzerker? Add some hair on them (not all of them). I always imagine the World Eaters having black hair.

Another cool idea (if you have the money for it) would be to get the Khorne Berzerker bits form Forge World and remove the Khornate bunny ears and make them more Heresy era like. The details on the mouth and bare head components on the helmets look too awesome. If too expensive you could also try to achieve the same effect with green stuff.

Oh yeah, remove the Imperial Eagles from the models (especially the dread). Another cool touch would be battle damage and gore. :)

MagosBinary - October 4, 2010 08:13 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the replies guys! rest assured updates are coming, started to slap some paint on the Dreadnought last night and he should hopefully be almost done by thursday.

As for the sizing I use a combination of several peoples ideas.
The legs are standard terminator legs with the recesses filled. The body is an Assault marine torso with the eagle wings filed off, cabling added and a 1mm plasticard spacer to increase the depth of the body. This is glued to the legs, and a new belt fashioned from a strip of thin (I think it's 0.2mm) plasticard.

The only heavy weapons will be made using the new forgeworld PH missile launchers for that classic look.

Some have commented that the Devourer is a bit short but to me he's right size, after all It's still the same size marine, the armour is just bulkier, so the model retained the same height as the PA marines by adding a spacer to the waist and then bulking out the armour.

Rest assured tutorials will folow when the next PA squad is built (gotta by me some forgeworld red scorpion sets so I can mix-n-match MKIV and MKV in the squads-hence no squad markings yet)
As will close ups of the dreadnought's weaponry (yes those are hands holding the triggers, DO NOT ask how much swearing was involved!) and details within the next few days when he's finished.

Oh yeah...any suggestions for a name for him?

Very nice stuff indeed.

Can I make a request though? The forum doesn't resize the photos automatically and I need to take a bus to see the other end of your photos. Usually, if you crop or resize your images to around 600-650 pixels wide, then they should fit on the screen nicely for everyone.

Cheers. :)

Okay…First set of proper updates
After having a day off work today (oh the perils of having to work Saturdays!) I decided to knuckle down and get the dreadnought finished.

Taken me most of the day but I think he’s now at the stage where I’m happy to game with him, but there are a few details that could be added/tidied. Any suggestions for the left shoulder guard? Thinking a GS scroll nameplate, but any other ideas would be welcome!

Ladies and gentlemen I present for your enjoyment the World Eater Dreadnought Chlothar

And a little packet from Maxmini arrived this morning so the Devourer will be next onto the painting bench when second squad are done.
My only other thought is- I deliberately ordered the Terminator pads without tassles as I’ve never liked that look, but how does Chainmail hanging under the pads sound?

More to come

Hurrah! Now the pics are no longer also truescale I can finally comment! :)

These guys are simply awesome, and one of the finest examples of truescale I have seen. I'm particularly fond of the 'under the arm' configuration (as seen in Collected Visions), but the overall effect of what you have done so far is excellent!

I think chainmail under the pads looks pretty good for WE. I used it on my own (normal sized) terminators as well as veteran squads. It helps break up the white/blue, and also adds a little WE-esque flavour to them I find.

(linked so as not to intrude on the blog)

WIP sergeant shot

I think with the brutal look you have already made, you could make them come across as even more brutal.

Pacific that's the first time in a long time I've typed in lol and meant it! Sorry, MagosBinary, I mean no offense your work is beautiful!

Have you thought about battle damage? There are some big plains of blue, and it would be nice if they were broken up a bit. I know it's harder to shade those big, flat panels so some bullets and scorching might do the trick.

Einarr - October 5, 2010 05:54 PM (GMT)
Welcome aboard!

As for your work so far, it has been interesting and very good.
Your truescale marines are looking very nice, but my favourite would be the dreadnought, it really stands out!

As for the chainmail under the pads, I'm with Pacific on this one. I think it would be a nice touch because it breaks up the stark white colour of the model whilst giving a more gladiatorial look to the model as well.

From the little experience that I have accumulated from painting my WE it is rather rewarding to paint battle damage/scorch markings/gore on them lunatics - unless you want them fresh from the battle barge!

Cheers and welcome aboard once again!

And so we assemble for the push to Terra.
Amid the burned and shattered ruins of this city we are baptised and reborn. Baptised in the blood of innocents. Reborn in the true image of our father and unleashed upon the Imperium to free mankind from the shackles that the Betrayer has bound them in.
The slave doesnˇ¦t know he lives in servitude and pain. The slave is blind to the betrayals and suffering he is forced to endure at his masters whims.

Today we fought beside my father, and the Red Angel was a wonder to behold. Blood running from Gorefather and his unrestrained fury unleashed as the survivors lashed at us in their dying spasms. A wounded animal, terrified and backed into a corner, randomly striking out in pain and anger, not knowing or caring why just desperate to exact some revenge as we tore the heart from them.
At the height of the battle, amid the ruins of Tibannopolis I had the honour of slaying the corpulent and corrupt Primagos of Rosillia. A bloated and feeble man, surrounded by his baying sycophants, he died as many of his people had under the yoke of the Betrayer, naked, weeping and without dignity or honour.

Thus were the streets of Rosillia cleaned with innocent blood. For blood is the source of power, and the blood of an innocent spilled in anger is where the true power lies. Death now stalks the stars, and his gaze, like ours is centred on the rotten heart of this Imperium, and the Betrayer who sits there playing with his slaves like a spider toys with its food.

SoooˇK..update time then.
Itˇ¦s been a little while, but even with real life doing itˇ¦s best to get in the way Iˇ¦ve managed to get some more work done on Captain Vortigernˇ¦s Speartip.
Basing has been started on the completed figures, going with a grey/brown urban rubble base for ease and consistency.
The Devourers are done, Vortigern is very much a PIP and I now have 5 (yes 5!) of the 7 Drop Pods in need. 2 of them are assembled and the other 3 still languish in their boxes (damn real life creeping up on me again!)

Now onto the pics.

Yep, two of the arms from the Orc nobs in AoBR. Just waiting for the extra shoulder pads to turn up from maxmini.

I figured that paired chainfists was a really appropriate choice for a world eater captain.

Something is happening to us…….
A music of the blood, a siren song of death and fire……
Quiet, but growing…..
They say that blood calls out to blood but there is a power in this…
I feel it coursing through me.
When my claws cut flesh my blood sings, when blood is spilt my mind howls .
Something ancient and dark is answering….

Update time…and some reinforcements too.
It’s been a while but I thought I’d update this when I had reached another of the milestones and maybe get some feedback on another little project (it does have something to do with this so please bear with me!)

Let’s start with what I’ve managed to finish. Firstly the 5 drop pods that I have are finished (and were actually quicker to paint than I expected thanks to the judicious use of masking tape and both black and white spray paints)

Love the drop pods, very clean and crisp! How easy was the masking tape to use? I only ask because I have two WE pods waiting for paint on my desk right now...

Luther looks very cool, but I agree he would look great with hair/beard. He looks a bit Horus-y at the moment, not that that is necessarily a bad thing...

Hey shroud
The masking tape was quite easy to use. I bought some of the low tack decorators tape and had no problems with it lifting paint.
It was a case of spraying the pod black, painting all the metal and blue areas then covering anything I didn't want White with the tape. Then a liberal spray of White and peel the tape off and voila!
The biggest time consuming bit was cutting the tape to shape. The easiest way I found was to use the round end of the GW sculpting tool to push the tape into the edges then use those edges as the guides where to cut.

Once you've got the first one done then any others are a breeze!

Gethsani burns below us as the brotherhood of Mars turns upon itself in a wanton orgy of death and corruption.
Reinforcements have arrived, fresh blood for the harvest.
We have been given a new target…..
Something worthy of our skills, something that will test us to the limit and shower us with skulls and glory.
Something secret…..
Blood and death calls.

The reinforcements mentioned in Vortigern’s report are because they’re upping the points for UK Throne of Skulls to 1750.
So what to add to an all drop pod army of frothing loonies? Why more frothing loonies of course.
This will be in the form of a second wolfguard squad, the Desh’ean Gladiators, 5 wolfguard with 1 wolfclaw each, and 1 wolfguard with Mark of the Wolfen, all in a drop pod.

More to come soon,
And for those who haven’t seen it yet I’m also making these guys a true scale Land Raider for “Armies on Parade”
