Title: Shaw3029's Pre Heresy Imperial Fists
shaw3029 - September 16, 2010 10:46 AM (GMT)
Some of you may have seen my army on some other message boards or even at some of the Tempus Fugitives events. I met some of you guys last weekend and have decided to join the forum.
The army is currently over 3000 points and is only base coated and washed. The whole army was built before I had seen the new Forge world armour marks. I will be adding some of those in the near future.
Without further introductions here are the pictures!
Rogal Dorn and his Primarch Honour Guard with their Land Raider Transport.
Imperial Fist Tactical Squads with their Rhino Transports.
Landspeeder Squadron, which now all carry Multi Meltas.
Terminator Chaplain and his Terminator Assault Squad backed up by two Vindicators.
Drill Sgt Castor and his Sternguard standing with Camba Diaz and his Fellsword, flanked by a Sabre tank hunter and purturabo storm tank.
Pair of Predators who now have the parts for a more Pre heresy refit.
A 10 Man Sternguard squad.
The Sternguard squads Rhino which has since been painted to the same standard as the rest of the army.
A 10 man Assault Squad (which has also since been painted) led by...
My half finished Chaplain.
Primarch Honour Guard in Terminator armour with Archamus Huscarl of the Templars. These were added just before the last campaign weekend. I ran out of "proper" Terminator arms so had to use the black reach terminator arms on Archamus. This squad will soon to transformed into a standard Terminator squad. I am just waiting on the neccesary parts.
If anybody would like some close up photos I have plenty you just need to ask.
Yvraith - September 16, 2010 11:59 AM (GMT)
Sweet looking force you have there.
For an army that you say is only basecoated and washed they look surprisingly good.
I really like the small (and not so small) conversions you have made.
Where did you get the panels for the rhino? (if you don't mind me asking) ;)
Welcome once again to the boards, I look forward to seeing your army grow.
Legion XX - September 16, 2010 01:05 PM (GMT)
The Rhino panels might be from Chapterhouse, and I think I see one or two of their shoulder pads in there too.
This is a FANTASTIC looking army - congrats!
Rogal Dorn - September 16, 2010 07:19 PM (GMT)
...gorgeus....i cant think of any other words
lord_caldera - September 17, 2010 05:48 AM (GMT)
Welcome to the forum! I followed your log on BnC for a while, it will be cool to see how this develops since I don't frequent them as much. Your army is excellent even with such a basic painting technique.
Dargor - September 17, 2010 11:06 AM (GMT)
Excellent army and excellent chap.We gave the traitor scum something to remember us by in the Great Scouring,go strikeforce Emperor's Fury!
Even though the army is still wip as you say,it looks amazing. When it is finished,i am sure it will be Display Case material.
Keep up the good work!
Lunasteve - September 18, 2010 12:55 AM (GMT)
fantastic looking fists mate, if my stuff looked that good after a base coat and a wash it wouldnt get touched again :)
Dobermann - September 19, 2010 05:02 PM (GMT)
Great army. I love how you modelled every single marine.
I also love the paint scheme, very realistic.
Can you please post more photos of the tactical squads and the honour guard?
how did you make Terminator shoulder pad?
you said you ran out of proper arms? where do you order them?
army310 - September 19, 2010 07:34 PM (GMT)
like everone else great army. Yours is like mine drity and dark like how a true space marine is.
DaemonlordAbraxes - September 19, 2010 09:44 PM (GMT)
Doberman; Those are actually Maxminis "Large Shoulder Pads"
Hero of Istvaan - September 23, 2010 11:08 AM (GMT)
welcome to the boards dude! thats twice now we've fought together on the same team and twice ive been task force commander!
your 'Fists are awesome and have given the kick up the ass i need to get me to tidy up/finish off my own force! ;)
get some more pics up soon dude, i think i can speak for us all wen i say im looking forward to seeing what you do next! B)
shaw3029 - September 23, 2010 03:00 PM (GMT)
Thanks for such a warm welcome guys!!
The Terminator shoulder pads are indeed from maxmini, the Rhino panels and a few of the Tactical Marine shoulder pads are from Chapter house studios.
The paint job so far is extremely simple it goes like this;
Chaos Black Spray undercoat.
Two slightly watered down coats of Iyanden Darksun on all the armoured areas. Scorched brown & Chaos Black wash. The trick is to apply this in sections and then when it has a little time to dry you wipe off the excess with a wet paint brush to give the streaky effect.
Go back over the armour and paint the cables, shoulder pad rims & seals Chaos Black.
Paint the brown areas Scorched brown & all the metal areas Boltgun Metal. I wash both areas with chaos black.
After this I base the models and that is where the whole army currently stands.
Here are some closeups of the Primarch Honour Guard before painting,
Primarch Honour Guard 1.
Primarch Honour Guard 2.
Hopefully you can see the amount of conversion work that went into each individual figure. The Legion Champion is my favourite model in the army. I will be making a Chapter Master at some point to lead the squad in place of Dorn (who was built quickly for the Tempus Fugitives Event) I just have to outdo the Legion Champion model!
The Tactical Squads are currently undergoing some conversion work but here are some much older photos of them. These photos were taken before I had neatened the paint job up and changed several squad members and the weapon loadouts.
I have recently ordered some parts from a few of the bits websites so you will see them all with the correct backpack soon. I will also be ordering some Forgeworld parts shortly so expect them to all have some shiny new boltguns aswell as a couple of new guys who will be replacing a couple of the models that I am not overly fond of.
I will post some more updates soon.
PS. Dargor & Hero Of Istvaan It was great fighting alongside both of you at the events.
Twice you've led us although I must admit our Task force did much better this time around with the other legions than we did by ourselves.
Dargor your Blood Angels army (along with your Emperors Children) is exceedingly well done and seeing them "in the flesh" has really inspired me to finish my own army.
SQ - September 23, 2010 10:10 PM (GMT)
These are so frickin' totally approved!
Can't believe such an easy painting technique can spawn forward such amazing minis! :D
shaw3029 - October 6, 2010 06:10 PM (GMT)
I got the Missile Launcher through and gave it to the tactical marine squad.
I plan to do a Devastator squad with four of these :D
Azkaellon - January 16, 2011 09:56 PM (GMT)
i cant believe i missed this thread on here! i'm a fan over on B&C. its great to see such a great force on here.
looking forward to what you'll do with the new forgeworld armour mks
Kriegersen - January 16, 2011 10:13 PM (GMT)
dude, thats some propper thread necro right there...
just be careful dude ;)
shaw3029 - July 6, 2011 05:15 PM (GMT)
It has been a long time!! I kinda forgot that I had a thread on here. You may have seen these already over at Warseer. But if not, here you go!
And another angle,
I am reluctant to call them finished as they dont have weapons and I do have plans to add battle damage to get back to the grittier, dirty look that I had before. I have been looking at this tutorial, http://thepaintingcorps.blogspot.com/2008/...ing-battle.html
I just cant bring myself to do the squad just yet. I will have to do some test models and practise first.
Since I did this squad I have also been working on my vehicles. Well just the siege shields.
I'm going for a very dirty and worn look on all of the vehicles. I shall be repainting them all soon with the airbrush. The siege shields will be the most worn and dirty part but hopefully it gives you a good idea of how the vehicles might look.
The marines will still be relatively clean and bright. I've still got a little weathering to do but they wont be anywhere near as dirty as the vehicles. I was a contrast between the two. I'm sure it will work out fine in the end.
Pacific - July 7, 2011 01:07 AM (GMT)
Like you say, I'm sure it must be difficult to know what to do with those guys. You've made a wonderful job with the yellow, a really rich and smooth finish. I would definitely be concious about going too far and spoiling what you have done so far. On the other hand, I can understand that you need to have it fit in with the gritty style you have used for the rest of the force.
That's the exact opposite situation to my own, where I use battle damage and paint chipping to cover up my previous shoddy painting efforts :P
shaw3029 - July 7, 2011 01:31 PM (GMT)
Cheers. I will just be adding a little battle damage and weathering to the troops I dont want to go over board and spoil them.
I had a big package of resin arrive last week,
I've enough parts to make 4 Rhinos,2 predators and change the tracks on my Land Raider.
I am toying with the idea of selling the Rhinos (without the dozer blades) and buying some new ones. So if anybody is interested in the Rhinos and Predators send me a message.
ShroudFilm - July 7, 2011 08:08 PM (GMT)
Cool! Where are those parts from?
BigWill - July 7, 2011 09:20 PM (GMT)
shaw3029 - July 8, 2011 09:49 AM (GMT)
The parts are from this guy, http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=301929
His Ebay store is, http://stores.ebay.com/Blood-and-Skulls-Industry
Sent him a message he may have some left just let him know where you saw them.
Absyrtus the Redeemer - July 10, 2011 09:59 AM (GMT)
Phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal. Wow, just....wow.
I love your work. I must admit, I love your 'clean' yellow more than your weathered one. But it all looks amazing. Even more amazing is the conversion work you've done. Your Sternguard and Primarch Guard in particular are brilliant works of modelling art in their own right.
shaw3029 - September 7, 2011 05:19 PM (GMT)
Thanks Absyrtus. That means alot.
I have made some progress on the Rhino over the past few days. Here is base coated and highlighted with a airbrush.
Next on the list is shadowing with oil paint, weathering powder and white spirit.
shaw3029 - September 20, 2011 10:00 PM (GMT)
I spent a little time today with the airbrush on the tank.
BigWill - September 20, 2011 11:37 PM (GMT)
You have an airbrush, well, well, well that changes the whole game.
Try this on your next tank, basecoat it darker than you want it to be.
Then use the main color to spray the centers of the panels.
You can see what I mean on a pic of a Valk I've donehttp://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f295/wil...icture004-1.jpg
See how you can see a faint darker shade at the panel lines.
Also look into Tamiya hobby paint, ideal for airbrushing and it thins with isopropyl alcohol which you can get for about $2 at a drug store,or spend $8 on Tamiya thinner but it is one and the same.
Tamiya Buff thinned 10 parts thinner to 1 part Buff makes awesome dust effects
For the most realistic metalics look into Alclad II mettalic Lacquar.
They also sell black spray primer that is needed for metallics.
The primer is sandable with micro sandpaper for some of the high shine metals such as Chrome,Stainless Steel, and Polished Aluminum, the dull metals do not need sanding.
Micro-Mark sells sanding pads that go from 1000-8000 grit.
You can also find them at model railroad/hobby shops you are looking for high grit sandpaper 3000 grit is a great alround one but try to get the pack that has the variety of grits.
You start at 1000 and by the time you get to 8000 the primer itself has a glossy shine.
The glossy shine is nesessary for the metal to be reflective, but when done right you can litterally see your face in it.
You can also use gloss enamel but to get it right is a real art,you have to spray it so heavy until it ALMOST drips.
shaw3029 - December 28, 2011 01:33 PM (GMT)
Thanks for that BIgWill. I shall have to give that a go.
Its been a few months but Look what Santa got me!
A Contemptor Dreadnought! I love these dreads! The normal one looks a little strange now. Like he needs an extra section between the body and the legs.
I also purchased a pot of liquid green stuff which I am finding really useful for smoothing out small holes and scrapes like where the Aquila once was.
I have also made some progress on the tactical squad,
I still have alot of work to do on them but I hope you like them so far. I will get some more closeups soon.

Oh I never really thought of that! That's an idea that I'll have to steal! ;)
But is it any good? I've heard mix reviews saying its just a thick paint or it doesnt work at all.
Nice Imperial Fists by the way.
shaw3029 - December 29, 2011 05:52 PM (GMT)
I found it really useful. You need to build it up and thin it with water sometimes.
shaw3029 - December 29, 2011 09:34 PM (GMT)
Done a little work today with the airbrush. Its very work in progress. Its hard to see the blending in the photo at the moment.
shaw3029 - December 30, 2011 04:51 PM (GMT)
Another WIP shot.
King Fluff - December 30, 2011 04:56 PM (GMT)
possibly my favourite fists force :)
really looking forward to the finished contemptor
shaw3029 - December 30, 2011 08:33 PM (GMT)
Well thanks very much! That means alot.
Yet another WIP shot.
The black areas will mostly be metallic and Ive still got to add weathering powders and battle damage.
shaw3029 - January 1, 2012 02:48 PM (GMT)
He is finished!
I really liked this kit. Certainly one of the most fun models that I've painted. I shall certainly be getting another kit. Two asssault cannons and a cyclone missile launcher. ;)
I made a few mistakes with painting this guy so Im looking forward to having another go at some point.
Ilmarinen - January 1, 2012 04:58 PM (GMT)
Very nice. The weathering and battle damage are great.
Pettsy - January 1, 2012 05:42 PM (GMT)
Is everyone on this site trying to force me into buying a Contemptor? That model is gorgeous, especially the weathering and highlighting. The sense of movement from the model is great.
My only criticism would be the base, just seems a little bland. I think it needs something. Apart from that a great job. Can't wait to see more.
shaw3029 - January 2, 2012 10:18 PM (GMT)
Cheers guys. I agree about the base I had that feeling myself. I will add some more details in the future. Im thinking of a Iron Warrior helmet at least.
BigWill - January 2, 2012 10:29 PM (GMT)
You may just have room for a ripped off rhino door or at least a large piece of one.
That's what I'd do,IW door on the floor
shaw3029 - February 2, 2012 07:42 PM (GMT)
Cheers guys. I havnt done anymore to the Contemptor but Im certainly planning to do something with the base soon.
After playing a few games yesterday Im thinking...
Just need some Multi Melta Side Sponsons. It has a transport capacity of 6 so I can fit in all four of my honour guard plus a Chapter Master (thinking Pedro Kantor) and a Chaplain.
I could magnetise it as well! Then I could field either one!
Heres a little WIP on the Rhinos,
