Imperial victory, 5 kill points to 2 but xenos completely wiped out
After the Emperor's Children had made planetfall and secured a suitable landing site for Imperial reinforcements on the planet, an armoured division from the Texican 7th were deployed as the vanguard to a larger force en route. These battle-hardened veterans had heard many tales of the Emperor's Children and how easily they had vanquished the greenskins, and were keen to earn some glory for themselves too.
But in the wake of the Ork defeat at the hands of Fulgrim's legion, a new Warboss had risen to power above his fellows - the mighty Blootoof had reunited the scattered Orks in the mountains to the west and planned to lead a horde of xenos down upon the Imperial muster point before they could land more reinforcements.
As the sun hung high overhead, Imperial auspex began to show multiple returns emerging from the foothills of the mountains across the valley...
The Emperor's Children had deployed Thunderfire artillery in a fortified position behind their lines, and it opened up with devastating effect on the advancing Ork mobs. Explosions rippled through their ranks, but for every greenskin that fell it seemed as though he was replaced by three more.
The xenos hurled themselves down the slopes towards the valley floor, and had soon reached the relative cover of the ruins and scorched forests left by the previous Imperial bombardment of the landing site.
Seeing their chance for glory, the Texicans gunned their engines and sped off towards the approaching hordes in spite of the Astartes officers' protestations. Two Chimera APCs and a Hellhound left the Imperial landing site as more artillery shells rained down ahead.
But from the sparse woodland in the foothills to the west, strange and primitive rotor-based aircraft descended over the heads of the Orks and sent salvos of explosive rockets shrieking towards the Imperial units. To the north, seemingly oblivious to the jets of flame from the Hellhound's cannon, the greenskins rushed to block the vehicle's path.
Even as the Texican gunner attempted to engage the swarming Orks at close range, the brutish xenos wrenched open armoured hatches and hurled explosive charges into the crew compartment, detonating the machine in a conflagration of blazing promethium which engulfed many Orks and lit up the blackened woods all around.
Banking to avoid incoming lasfire from the Texicans, two of the Ork aircraft collided as they swooped too low over a rocky outcropping, sending shattered rotors scything through the air and the remains of their chassis whirling to destruction.
But the remaining craft loosed more rockets upon the nearest Chimera, and with a muffled thud from within the hull it ground to a halt and began to billow thick black smoke from its engine vents. Seeing that the Imperial Army were floundering in the face of the greenskins' assault, the Astartes opened up with another salvo from the Thunderfire to screen the remaining Chimeras and give their allies a chance to pull back.
The explosions decimated the Orks beyond the burning woodland, leaving only a handful of stunned survivors to pick themselves from among the scorched debris and body parts.
With a bestial roar, Warboss Blootoof and the bloodied survivors of his retinue emerged from the blasted engagement zone in the middle of the valley, and they opened fire on the Emperor's Children who had been held in reserve to protect the Thunderfire Cannon. Orders were relayed and confirmed, and the Astartes charged in a calculated counter-offensive now that the Orks had been reduced to manageable numbers by the sustained artillery strikes.
The primitive aircraft buzzed the immobilised Chimera as they sped towards the undefended Imperial lines, but were driven off by the rifle fire of the veteran troopers within.
But the gunners could only look on in horror as a near-fresh mob of Orks charged the vehicle, brandishing crude blades and explosive charges that would have been considered comically large under any other circumstances...
The second Chimera opened its access ramps and the Texicans leapt out, ready for the thrill of close combat. However, a single shot from the sergeant's laspistol felled one of the surviving Orks, and his armoured companions turned and fled amid jeers and insults from the Imperial veterans who gave chase!
Without a screen of Tactical Astartes to protect him, the Thunderfire gunner dived for cover as a salvo of rockets from the enemy aircraft struck his position. Showers of sparks issued from his cannon's mountings, and with a whine of protesting servos it slumped forwards, its delicate targeting matrix shattered.
He thumbed his vox-bead and called for assistance, and within moments a blaze of bolter fire brought down the last rotor craft upon the slopes of the Imperial muster point.
The greenskins took advantage of the distraction and set upon the crippled Chimera, quickly severing fuel lines and igniting the reserves. A fireball tore through the crew compartment, drowning out the screams of the troopers within and detonating the promethium tanks for the hull-mounted heavy flamer. Bodies were hurled from the wreckage by the force of the explosion, and only a single trooper survived... most likely because of his flame retardant armour which marked him as a meltagun specialist.
He lay pinned beneath the smouldering remains of the hull plate, and struggled to free himself as he saw Blootoof's retinue stalking through the wreckage looking for survivors to butcher.
The Astartes closed on the Warboss, bolter fire felling those closest to him but seeming to miss Blootoof himself. Feeling invincible, the Ork leader strode forwards, flexing his creaking power claw and bellowing crude insults to the legionnaires as they drew their combat blades.
The last of his Nobz retinue dragged the surviving Texican trooper from the wreckage and guffawed as the smalll human struggled in his grip. Without ceremony he struck the man's head from his shoulders and tossed it at the Emperor's Children with a snort of amusement, wiping his hands on his rough tunic.
The Astartes had surrounded Blootoof, and the Warboss began to panic as they waited for their chance to strike him down. He swung his claw in a wide circle but overreached... and they were upon him. The great hulking Ork was bundled to the floor and torn apart by the weight of the Astartes' strikes and point-blank fire.
Signal flares had already begun to arc through the sky in salute of the impending Imperial victory, as the Emperor's Children turned on the last of Blootoof's Nobz. The greenskin opened his fanged maw, no doubt to challenge or curse the Space Marines, but he was blown apart by bolter fire before any sound emerged.
The last surviving Ork in the valley was still fleeing from the Chimera amid the burned trees to the north, but a gout of flame from the vehicle's heavy weapon engulfed him and ended the sorry affair.
The xenos attack had been crushed, and lessons had been learned. The Texicans had jeopardised the success of the Imperial landing operations by pursuing glory instead of following their orders, and it was a lesson that had already cost them dearly...
