Title: TGC SUMMER CAMPAIGN - 'ULLANOR'
Description: Report your battles here, with pics!

ShroudFilm - May 19, 2010 05:03 PM (GMT)
As you all know, the TGC summer campaign for 2010 is a grand recreation of the Imperial invasion of the Ork empire of Ullanor. Report your games here, and we will correlate the results to see how the fate of a whole system is playing out...!

PLEASE NOTE -
This thread is for battle reporting ONLY. There should be no comments and no non-report discussion at all, and such posts will be deleted without warning.

Remember that this is all just a bit of fun, but that the outcome of the whole campaign can rest on the actions of even a single trooper. Don't make stuff up, and don't report fake games, or the whole thing becomes a farce... it's not about who wins or which race emerges victorious, but it's about getting more people into playing PH themed games.

Having said that, TGC will award prizes for good reports and particularly exciting battles - expect things like GW books and models, and even gift vouchers if you are a Loyalist, Champion or Moderator. To be in with a chance, you must play an interesting and exciting game (or play LOTS of games!) between now and Sunday 5th September, and you must report your game according to the following criteria:

==========

1) All reports must include the following information at the beginning -

Game Type and Points Value: for example, '40K 1500pts' or 'Apocalypse 3000pts'
Mission: for example, 'Annihilation' or 'Take and Hold'
Armies Involved: for example, 'Raven Guard, Imperial Army and Blood Axes'
Imperial Player/s: for example, 'Smith Johnson'
Ork Player/s: for example, 'John Smithington'
Result (including VP totals): for example, 'Ork victory 2 objectives to 1'

2) You should then give details of the events that unfolded, in as much detail as practical. Make special mention of heroic acts or seemingly impossible feats, as well as any particularly bad mistakes and poor luck on the dice rolls. The more flavour we have, the better.

3) We then want to see AT LEAST one photo per game turn, and if possible some fun shots of the players celebrating their wins and lamenting their losses, and the armies involved in the game. Please refer to the Photography Tutorial for tips on better wargames photography.

==========

If a report does not conform to these guidelines, it will not be counted in the campaign and you will not be in the running for any prize. It's not hard to make a few notes and take some pictures as you go, and the more we can see the more fun the campaign will be for all involved! :D

Dargor - June 15, 2010 12:27 AM (GMT)
The Ullanor Crusade was a vast assault upon the empire of Ork Overlord Urrlak Urruk that took place at the apex of the Great Crusade.
While other Space Marine Legions, supported by newly-raised Imperial Army regiments, were tasked to retake the outlying planets of the Ullanor system, the Luna Wolves fleet drove straight for the central world. The force was massive. 100,000 space marines, 8 milllion Imperial Army Troops, Hundreds of Spacecraft.A splinter force of the 28th Expeditionary fleet, supported by the Imperial Army, was tasked with the taking of the system's second planet...

Game Type and Points Value: 40K 1000pts
Mission: Annihilation
Armies Involved: Emperor's Children and Goff Orks
Imperial Player: Demetris "Dargor" Tampakoudis
Ork Player: Pavlos Xristoglou
Result (including VP totals): Imperial Victory, 8 kill points to 1

The battle for Landing site 8 would later be described as a minor, opening skirmish in the Retaking of Ullanor; a footnote to the fighting that was yet to come, but to the warriors in the speartip of Commander Diocletian's 14th Company of Emperor's Children,it felt considerably more intense than a skirmish.
A small greenskin horde had amassed to intercept the Astartes, and the greenskins were racing across the field to meet them the very moment they landed. The Xenos outnumbered the Emperor's Children almost 3 to 1,mobs of Ork warriors shouting their vile battle cries and their crude vehicles belching thick black smoke to the heavens.

The Astartes battle group deployed in a textbook defensive formation.Sergeant Photius and his Cataphracti Terminators along with the Commander himself stood at the base of a small hill, the 2 Rhino borne Tactical Squads "Demetrius" and "Veranius" covering the flanks and the Predator "Imperius" along with the Thunderfire cannon "Steel Rain" set up in the back, ready to provide fire support.Fortifying their position as best as they could on the time availiable to them, the Emperor's Children prepared to receive the Ork onslaught.
user posted image
Commander Diocletian tried to think of a way to outmanouver the Orks, and sieze the initiative of the battle, but it was hard to make any resonable judgement against such a barbaric and bestial foe.His thoughts reminded him once again why the Xenos were so different and utterly alien to the Human mind and way of thinking. They were less than vermin in his eyes and they deserved nothing less than extinction.
The Orks, being what they are, didn't concern themselves with such deep thinking like their enemies. They did what came naturally to them and simply charged forwards seeking battle, blood and death.
user posted image
As soon as they entered heavy weapons range, the Emperor's Children opened fire.Diocletian didn't need to give any orders, his men were the very best of the Emperor's Astartes, constant training and seeking of perfection making them as precise in their actions as an Ultramarine on the parade ground. This though brought the ghost of a smile on his grim face and he simply nodded his approval when the Imperius's Autocannon blew an Ork light transport apart. Thick smoke rose from the wreckage and the smell of burning flesh filled Diocletian's nostrils. The surving passengers of the "Trukk",as it was called by the Orks, disembarked behind it,trying to shield themselves from further harm. The Thunderfire cannon fired a cluster of subterranean shells that exploded under the nearest Ork mob, killing several and sending the rest tumbling down.A slight chuckle escaped Photius's lips as he watched the Xenos trying to steady themselves, earning him a hard glance from the Commander.Lascannon fire from the Tactical squads in the Rhinos found their marks but failed to critically damage the bigger Ork vehicle.

Meanwhile, the Orks kept their relentless advance towards the Imperial strongpoint.A strange Ork carrying an assortment of exotic mechanical devices, followed by four smaller Orks carrying what looked like enormous flamers, appeared behind the wrecked vehicle. The air around it crackled with electrical enery, making it no secret that the area around it was protected by what could be described as a crude force field. The mech-Ork and his retinue moved to the shadow of a ramshackle, rusted building nearby and waited for the rest of their warriors to reach them. The mob hit by the Thunderfire cannnon was still in the process of finding its lost momentum and did not go very far,but the huge transport designated as "Battle Wagon" gunned it engines to the full, another mob of Orks running screaming behind it.
user posted image
The Imperial line opened fire once again, subterranean shells from the Thunderfire killing even more Orks and sending the rest to the ground once again. The Imperius send terrifying amounts of firepower to the Mech-Ork and its unit, the two Rhinos adding their twin bolters to the furious cresendo, tearing the Xenos apart in a hail of explosions. The Lascannons of the Tactical squads fired at the armoured behemoth one more time but its thick frontal plates kept it safe from harm."They are getting too close..." Diocletian trailed off."Looks like we will have to settle this the old fashioned way sir ." replied Photius. The Commander nodded and activated his vox with a thought."Squad Veranius, prepare to move forward and delay their advance .We need you to buy us time to thin them out more." ."We'll keep them busy sir,Veranius out." came the reply at the same time the nearby Rhino's engine noise started rising in volume."Show them the Emperor's wrath brother." said Diocletian and deactivated the vox channel.

The mob nearest to the Emperor's Children finally managed to navigate its way through the chaos created by Steel Rain, the Orks thrilled at the prospect of close combat not being slowed one bit. They opended fire with their weapons on the Thunderfire cannon as soon as they came into range but the war machine was hidden behind well prepared defences and was left unharmed. The "Battle Wagon" came dangerously close and soon it would be able to unload whatever was in it right on top of the Imperial position. The other large mob of Orks also came closer as fast as they could, its Nob leader angry at his poor deployment skills.
user posted image
Just as "Eagle's Fury",squad Demetrius's Rhino, sped to the right executing a flanking manouvre, squad Veranius's Rhino "Eagle's Claw" sped forward and deployed its deadly cargo. Ten of the Emperor's finest exited their transport and as soon as they were out,Brother Doran unleashed the fury of his flamer.Orks scattered, screaming in pain as their flesh burned and fell to the tortured ground.More of them fell from well aimed pistol shots and the Astares charged into their hated enemies. The Imperium's finest met their bestial adversaries in hand to hand combat dispatching Orks left and right with their combat blades.Close combat is were Orks thrive though, and their counter attack was just as devastating.Three brothers fell, two never to rise again as their life sings dropped suddenly to zero inside Veranius's helmet. The Sergeant smashed an Ork coming at him to dust with his powerfist, when the triumphant roar of the Nob leader signalled the end of two more Astartes lives."Regroup brothers, show them no mercy! For Fulrgim and the Emperor!" screamed Veranius as the brutal melee continued...

Seeing the furious combat in front of them, the rest of the Orks could contain themsleves no longer.Roaring a battle cry that send a shiver down Diocletian's spine, they surged forward.Screaming "Waaaaagh!" at the top of their lungs the second Ork mob crashed against squad Veranius. The Battle Wagon sped through the small forest in front of the Imperial position, paying no heed to the dangers of such a bold move. What came out of it though, was far worse than itself. An Ork of massive proportions, armed with a huge machine gun on its right hand, the left ending in a wicked power claw, came forth leading a retinue of similar size and look to it.Charging at the head of its Nob lieutenants, the Warboss came straight for Diocletian, the other Orks going for his Terminators.Squad Photius braced themselves for the impact, the Commander readying his two handed broadsword."You wish to best me brute?I am Diocletian of the Emperor's Children and i am your death!" the Commander belowed and the leader of the orks answered the challenge with a bestial roar.As the Warboss lifted its power claw to strike,Diocletian stepped into its guard with blinding speed. Two flashes of silver and the brute's arms lay on the ground pumping blood,a third and it's thick head was severed from its shoulders. The fight was brutal, seeing two Terminators fall but not before taking three of the Nobs with them. The remaining Nobs seeing their leader lying in pieces on the ground decided they had enough and retreated. The Astartes consolidated their position,Diocletian wiping the foul smelling blood from his sword on the dead Warboss's clothes.Meanwhile, things didnt go so well for squad Veranius. The brave Astartes fought with all their strength and agility but the Orks were simply to many. All but brother Doran fell and even he was overwhelmed eventually and was crushed by the Nob's power claw. Not all of them were dead, but they were definitely out of the fight for now...

With the Warboss dead, the resolve of the remaining Orks begun to crumble.Just as they stood, confused with feelings of joy for their small victory over squad Veranius and dread for the loss of their leader, the Emperor's Children opened fire once again.Steel Rain lived up to its name, raining a punishing barrage of shells on the larger Ork mob, slaying over half of their number.Imperius took revenge for Veranius and his men, tearing the remnants of the mob they had charged to shreds.Eagle's Fury moved parallel to the Battle Wagon.Brother Leonis emerged from the top hatch with his meltagun and a huge explosion marked the end of the Battle Wagon. Commander Diocletian and the surviving Terminators of squad Photius moved up the hill to get a better view of the battlefield.
user posted image
The remaining Orks, leaderless and with no stomach left for a fight, turned their attention on the one thing that caused so many deaths among them that day, trying to extract some measure of revenge. They did not move but unleashed all their weapons on the Thunderfire cannon, firing widly and expending all their ammunition. After the smoke had cleared,Steel Rain still stood defiant and unharmed.
user posted image
The battle was over.It fell to squad Demetrius to mop up the remaining Orks, and they did so with unmatched ferocity leaving no greenskin alive.Commander Diocletian gathered his force at the top of the hill, rearming them and repairing the damaged defences. The Emperor's Children took their designated positions and secured the area. The bulky landers of the Imperial Army filled the sky after a while, ready to disgorge thousands of troops, tanks and machinery. The war for the second planet of the Ullanor system was just beginning...

Mission: Annihilation
Armies Involved: Emperor's Children and Imperial Army against Orks

Result (including VP totals): Imperial victory, 5 kill points to 2 but xenos completely wiped out

After the Emperor's Children had made planetfall and secured a suitable landing site for Imperial reinforcements on the planet, an armoured division from the Texican 7th were deployed as the vanguard to a larger force en route. These battle-hardened veterans had heard many tales of the Emperor's Children and how easily they had vanquished the greenskins, and were keen to earn some glory for themselves too.

user posted image

But in the wake of the Ork defeat at the hands of Fulgrim's legion, a new Warboss had risen to power above his fellows - the mighty Blootoof had reunited the scattered Orks in the mountains to the west and planned to lead a horde of xenos down upon the Imperial muster point before they could land more reinforcements.

user posted image

As the sun hung high overhead, Imperial auspex began to show multiple returns emerging from the foothills of the mountains across the valley...

1user posted image

The Emperor's Children had deployed Thunderfire artillery in a fortified position behind their lines, and it opened up with devastating effect on the advancing Ork mobs. Explosions rippled through their ranks, but for every greenskin that fell it seemed as though he was replaced by three more.

user posted image

The xenos hurled themselves down the slopes towards the valley floor, and had soon reached the relative cover of the ruins and scorched forests left by the previous Imperial bombardment of the landing site.

user posted image

Seeing their chance for glory, the Texicans gunned their engines and sped off towards the approaching hordes in spite of the Astartes officers' protestations. Two Chimera APCs and a Hellhound left the Imperial landing site as more artillery shells rained down ahead.

user posted image
user posted image

But from the sparse woodland in the foothills to the west, strange and primitive rotor-based aircraft descended over the heads of the Orks and sent salvos of explosive rockets shrieking towards the Imperial units. To the north, seemingly oblivious to the jets of flame from the Hellhound's cannon, the greenskins rushed to block the vehicle's path.

user posted image
user posted image

Even as the Texican gunner attempted to engage the swarming Orks at close range, the brutish xenos wrenched open armoured hatches and hurled explosive charges into the crew compartment, detonating the machine in a conflagration of blazing promethium which engulfed many Orks and lit up the blackened woods all around.

user posted image

Banking to avoid incoming lasfire from the Texicans, two of the Ork aircraft collided as they swooped too low over a rocky outcropping, sending shattered rotors scything through the air and the remains of their chassis whirling to destruction.

user posted image

But the remaining craft loosed more rockets upon the nearest Chimera, and with a muffled thud from within the hull it ground to a halt and began to billow thick black smoke from its engine vents. Seeing that the Imperial Army were floundering in the face of the greenskins' assault, the Astartes opened up with another salvo from the Thunderfire to screen the remaining Chimeras and give their allies a chance to pull back.

user posted image

The explosions decimated the Orks beyond the burning woodland, leaving only a handful of stunned survivors to pick themselves from among the scorched debris and body parts.

user posted image

With a bestial roar, Warboss Blootoof and the bloodied survivors of his retinue emerged from the blasted engagement zone in the middle of the valley, and they opened fire on the Emperor's Children who had been held in reserve to protect the Thunderfire Cannon. Orders were relayed and confirmed, and the Astartes charged in a calculated counter-offensive now that the Orks had been reduced to manageable numbers by the sustained artillery strikes.

user posted image

The primitive aircraft buzzed the immobilised Chimera as they sped towards the undefended Imperial lines, but were driven off by the rifle fire of the veteran troopers within.

user posted image

But the gunners could only look on in horror as a near-fresh mob of Orks charged the vehicle, brandishing crude blades and explosive charges that would have been considered comically large under any other circumstances...

user posted image

The second Chimera opened its access ramps and the Texicans leapt out, ready for the thrill of close combat. However, a single shot from the sergeant's laspistol felled one of the surviving Orks, and his armoured companions turned and fled amid jeers and insults from the Imperial veterans who gave chase!

user posted image

Without a screen of Tactical Astartes to protect him, the Thunderfire gunner dived for cover as a salvo of rockets from the enemy aircraft struck his position. Showers of sparks issued from his cannon's mountings, and with a whine of protesting servos it slumped forwards, its delicate targeting matrix shattered.

user posted image

He thumbed his vox-bead and called for assistance, and within moments a blaze of bolter fire brought down the last rotor craft upon the slopes of the Imperial muster point.

user posted image

The greenskins took advantage of the distraction and set upon the crippled Chimera, quickly severing fuel lines and igniting the reserves. A fireball tore through the crew compartment, drowning out the screams of the troopers within and detonating the promethium tanks for the hull-mounted heavy flamer. Bodies were hurled from the wreckage by the force of the explosion, and only a single trooper survived... most likely because of his flame retardant armour which marked him as a meltagun specialist.

user posted image

He lay pinned beneath the smouldering remains of the hull plate, and struggled to free himself as he saw Blootoof's retinue stalking through the wreckage looking for survivors to butcher.

user posted image

The Astartes closed on the Warboss, bolter fire felling those closest to him but seeming to miss Blootoof himself. Feeling invincible, the Ork leader strode forwards, flexing his creaking power claw and bellowing crude insults to the legionnaires as they drew their combat blades.

user posted image

The last of his Nobz retinue dragged the surviving Texican trooper from the wreckage and guffawed as the smalll human struggled in his grip. Without ceremony he struck the man's head from his shoulders and tossed it at the Emperor's Children with a snort of amusement, wiping his hands on his rough tunic.

user posted image

The Astartes had surrounded Blootoof, and the Warboss began to panic as they waited for their chance to strike him down. He swung his claw in a wide circle but overreached... and they were upon him. The great hulking Ork was bundled to the floor and torn apart by the weight of the Astartes' strikes and point-blank fire.

user posted image

Signal flares had already begun to arc through the sky in salute of the impending Imperial victory, as the Emperor's Children turned on the last of Blootoof's Nobz. The greenskin opened his fanged maw, no doubt to challenge or curse the Space Marines, but he was blown apart by bolter fire before any sound emerged.

user posted image

The last surviving Ork in the valley was still fleeing from the Chimera amid the burned trees to the north, but a gout of flame from the vehicle's heavy weapon engulfed him and ended the sorry affair.

The xenos attack had been crushed, and lessons had been learned. The Texicans had jeopardised the success of the Imperial landing operations by pursuing glory instead of following their orders, and it was a lesson that had already cost them dearly...

During the opening stages of the Ullanor campaign many of the Emperor’s Legions were tasked to retake the worlds of the Ork Empire of Ullanor with sword and fire. When word reached high command that a warboss was gathering forces for a full scale attack on the Emperor’s armies, a detachment of the World Eaters’ expeditionary fleet was tasked with the elimination of the Ork leader and the destruction of his forces. The Emperor’s hounds had been unleashed; blood and the stench of death would be left in their wake...

... One: Brace for impact...

The World Eaters started a typical planetstrike formation, the strike cruisers getting in low orbit to start the preliminary bombardment and the stormbirds ready to unleash their deadly cargoes. However, the orks had entrenched themselves well and their numbers were backed up by the might of the warboss and a psyker ork identified as ‘weirdboy’...
user posted image

When the lance strikes hit home, many orks lying outside their fortifications perished, and more could have perished also, but for their crude trenches. Following the missile barrage, one by one the units of the World Eaters arrived on the battlefield. The Drop pod smashed with bone jarring force behind the ork truck whilst the assault squads deployed in opposite positions facing the ork bastion. The land speeders made a controlled atmospheric entry and landed next to assault squad Sieghard, ready to provide fire support.

user posted image

As soon as they landed, the World Eaters opened up with everything they had. Melta fire from the tactical squad’s Brother Aldric sent the ork truck careening to the forests, four its passengers and a member of squad Beringar dying from the ensuing explosion. Brothers Audamar and Waldhar from squad Sieghard fired their meltaguns in the rear plating of the second truck, hitting critical systems and sending the truck in a wild course just ahead of the assault squad. Land Speeder Prejudice fired its heavy flamer through one of the bastion’s vision slits and burned three of the orks inside it. But many more were standing. Just then Land Speeder Pride shoot its multi-melta, although the bastion was heavily armoured the multi-melta’s fury did crack it open, the mighty wall coming crashing down...

Following such a firing fury, Squad Sieghard assaulted the orks that disembarked from the truck, and Squad Konrad along with Captain Einarr assaulted the orks standing behind the crude defence network. Squad Konrad made it in the courtyard but found themselves in deep waters as it seemed that no matter how many orks they killed their opponents could go on undaunted. In response the orks killed and incapacitated eight of the squad’s members, sergeant Konrad amongst them. Things were looking fairly bright for squad Sieghard, its members having entered a state of uncontrollable rage, their foes perishing before them in a single fell swoop.

The Orks having realised they had weathered the first wave somewhat successfully burst out from their positions with new vigour. The squad lying in the forests declared a charge to Squad Beringar their shouting curses in the top of their lungs. The large unit led by the ‘Weirdboy’ started treading towards squad Sieghard, but the ground was filled with debris and thus they lost three of their kin, the ork psyker failing to do any psychic attacks. Having lost their nerve, the orks did not take advantage of their numbers and failed to make it out of the debris and attack Squad Sieghard. The ork leader and his squad tried to wipeout what was left of squad Konrad and Commander Einarr, but facing unstoppable blood drenched space marines maddened with rage of their fallen comrades, they couldn’t land a single blow. In response Commander Einarr and his squad cut down four of the orks and when the greenskins tried to break from combat –despite their leader’s shouts and curses- they fell on them and killed them all in an orgy of blood. Near the woods however, marines and orks could not best one another despite the casualties from both sides though the ork nob started ripping apart the Squad’s Drop Pod his power claw tearing at the Pod’s systems.

After such unexpected victory, all squads except squad Beringar converged towards the ruined bastion, eager to get to grips with the ork psyker and his rather large unit. All of the marines fired upon the ‘Weirdboy’ and its squad and cut down many of them, but the Land Speeders took a horrific toll, roasting nearly twenty orks with their heavy flamers. When the fires backed down and the smoke cleared, Squad Sieghard and the remnants of Squad Konrad now led by Captain Einarr, were ready to launch a two front assault. The battle with the Weirboy’s unit was fierce but short indeed. Squad Sieghard was still in the grip of their battle rage and so the orks died quickly but painfully, the chainblades of the World Eaters dripping with thick alien blood. Near the woods the fighting was nearly over as now only the ork nob was left standing, somehow not daunted by the odds.

user posted image

The battle ended with the death of the ork nob but in reality it had ended long ago. The ork leader was dead, his psyker lieutenant was lying on the field his guts opened by a chain axe and countless of orks dead all around them. A foothold on the planed had been acquired but the war was not over, and new warlords and warbosses always sprung when their leaders were dead...

A huge ork force geared up and spoiling for a fight came rumbling over the hills and out of the woodland to the north.

with many of sigismunds forces either rearming aboard his ship in orbit or fighting else where they were out gunned and outmanned, this was not going to go well!

the marines rushed to their posts and readied their weapons,

the orks unit had had enough and ran back to the hills in fear and the marines let out a mighty cheer, but the battle was not yet won and if they couldnt push back the rest of the orks soon, they would be on top of them and then this fight would be over quickly!

'were losing this fight' sigismund thought to himself as he guided his marines fire. ''castor, im putting u in command of the line''
''aye sir! But where are you going?'' said Sgt castor
''To take the fight to them!''
and with that sigismund lept the defence line and charged at the warboss!

The orks let out a blood curdleing battle cry that reverberated through every marines chest..WAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

Then it happened, the orks were on them..

''Emperor guid my blade straight and true, FOR DORN! FOR THE MASTER OF MANKIND!''
As sigismund hit headlong into the warboss and his bodyguard he struck down his nobs in the first swing of his mighty black sword and with mind blowing speed he carried the swing round and drove it deep into the warboss's flank.
''yoos a fighty one 'umie, i'll give you dat. but yoos too small an puny to kills me!'' and with that he grabbed sigismunds blade and pulled himself down the blade to get closer to his pray and with his huge power claw he grabbed sigismund and lifted him into the air. ''we will take this world from you xenos scum'' and he spat in the face of the giant ork in defiance
''no 'umie, this lumps arrs and we aint leavin!''
and with the sound or cracking ceremite and fused bone sigismund went limp in his hand, ''too eezy'' said the ork and flung him to the ground.

castor and his strenguard were horrified at what they saw and directed all fire at the on coming warboss but it plunged into there ranks

castor watched as his men were ripped apart by it and flung himself at the warboss but was swatted aside but his mighty claw then stamped on and punched in the face with the mecanical claw leaving him battered and bloody.

the rest of the orks mopped up the remaining marines with ease scattered and leaderless they were easy sport and the orks like to play with their food.

as the warboss stood and watched the battle comming to a close he roared his mightiest ''WAAAAAAAAAAGH!'' and in unison his followers replied the cry letting it echo across the battle field for all to hear.
''I IZ THE MIGHTIEST WARBOSS, GUTSMASHER! THIS IS MY LUMP AND I AINT LEAVIN WITH OUT A FIGHT! SO COME AND 'AVE A GO IF U FINK YOOZ CAN TAKE US!

Vachir Khan and his small strike force race across the desert wastes, skirting around the scattered ruins. The Ork hunting was going well, and the Great Khan had tasked Vachir with herding the outlying warbands westwards, towards the great cull.

A glimmer of blue flickered in a shattered window up ahead. Vachir recognised it immediately. "Eldar ambush," he barked into his commlink, "Purge the Xenos brothers." "Eldar?" said Ormujin, "What is their purpose here?" "Irrelevant, Apothecary" replied Vachir tersely, "All units advance and engage."

Vachir Khan's strike force tears across the sands...

...while the Eldar lie in wait.

Spotting the waiting ambush, the White Scars move to attack. The Predators' autocannons fire on the nearest Falcon but only manage to stun it.

user posted image

The Eldar hold their position and the Falcons open fire, but even their advanced targeters are unable to pinpoint the speeding Imperial tanks through their smokescreen. On the White Scar's left flank, Warp Spiders wink into existence.

Bursting through its smokescreen, a Rhino slams to a halt in the midst of a boulder field. The Predators again open fire on the Falcons, but are unable to hit the shimmering xenos skimmers.

user posted image

One Falcon suddenly darts forwards and disgorges a squad of Fire Dragons, who annihilate a Predator with ease.

The Warp Spiders race towards Vachir Khan, clouds of monofilament spitting from their weapons, but with the skill of a saddleborn horseman Vachir jinks through it, sustaining only superficial wounds. As he draws his tulwar from its scabbard, he guns the engine of his bike, cleaving a Warp Spider in two an instant before it can activate its warp generator, leaving the other Spiders hitting only air.

user posted image

Their Rhino immobilised by a Falcon's brightlance, a tactical squad disembarks into cover and immediately gun down the nearby Fire Dragons.

user posted image

The Land Speeder speeds forwards to fire its experimental multimelta at a Falcon, only for the weapon to misfire. The Falcon's return fire destroys the Speeder's antigravitic system, causing it to crash land.

Trapped in the wreckage of their vehicle and unable to damage the Falcon immediately in front of them, the Land Speeder crew scream with rage as they are forced to watch the battle occurring around them, until the Falcon lowers its guns and obliterates them.

Vachir's considerable experience in fighting Eldar allows him to anticipate even the Warp Spiders tactics, as they flit in and out of existence around him. He grins savagely as his tulwar finally connects with the last of them.

A Falcon turns its guns on the bike-mounted Apothecary, who is flung violently from his saddle as his bike disintegrates around him. Further fire from the Falcons immobilises and then destroys the second Rhino, leaving the tactical squads little option but to run towards the Eldar positions.

Vachir spins his bike around in a spray of sand and unleashes a burst of fire from his bike-mounted bolters, hitting the engine of the Fire Dragons' Falcon, which lists sideways and embeds itself in the ground.

It's targeting systems temporarily off-line, the remaining Predator guns its engines and tries to ram a Falcon, only for the Falcon to hover away just out of reach.

One tactical squad races forwards to attack the grounded Falcon, but not even the Sergeant's power fist is able to do sufficient damage to the wraithbone construct.

With the White Scars weapons unable to target lock on the mirage-like outlines of the mobile Falcons, the Eldar skimmer-tanks suddenly disgorge two squads of Dire Avengers, which immediately fire on Vachir Khan, shredding the armour of his bike and his prototype power armour alike.

"Status?" said Vachir Khan, coughing up blood. "The Eldar have withdrawn, my Khan," said Sergeant Tarjal. "Apothecary Ormujin has been discovered and will survive, we have a defensive cordon established and a stormbird is en route for our retrieval." Vachir lay back and looked up at the sky. He did not care what victory the Eldar thought they had won, he only knew he would make them pay dearly at their next encounter.

When the word was spread that the Luna Wolves were to drive the speartip straight in to the heart of the Ork Empire of Ullanor, a significant number of the Emperor’s Legions were called upon to provide detachments of adequate proportions to secure the flanks of the advancing Imperial Fleet from Ork attacks and capture any and all planets that lay on the path of the Imperial Armada. One such fight took place upon the surface of a moon orbiting the 3 of the core worlds of the system. The Imperial scout ships had deployed reconnaissance drones that plied the sector in search of alien forms, hidden enemy installations and space docks. When information from the drones that camps with significant enemy numbers were based upon the green fields of a moon world orbiting the 3rd core planet reached the fleet, the Space Wolves were called in to purge the greenskin infestation and secure the planet in order to use as a resupply base. And so, as the battle raged in space, the Emperor’s Wolves made planetfall to the hills near an Ork camp and began preparing themselves to meet the horde.

The Ork hordes had watched the great flying machines land on the hills near their camp and dislodge squad after squad of armoured troops out of their metal mouths, and so rushed out to meet the enemy in bellowing, cursing waves. There was pushing and shouting and biting and stabbing- the Orks were that desperate to get to grips with the enemy, but their army was great and unruly and began to slow its advance because of the squabbling and infighting and the non-existent organization, thus allowing the Space Wolves to prepare themselves quite easily and begin their advance towards the horde, seizing the mob’s initiative and putting them on the back foot.
user posted image

Turn 1

The Space Wolves reformed their lines and the Wolf Guard with The Wolf Lord and Rune Priest advanced a little, just to get within shooting range of the enemy.
The Rune Priest used his powers to implore the spirit of the World Wolf to strike at the hated foe. A great chasm cracked open and an unfortunate Nob leader pushed to his death by the still squabbling Ork Mob- the Space Wolves had drawn first blood. But, in the distance the Ork horde began to advance, and what appeared to be a squad of Ork flying contraptions was speeding along one side of the field at impossible speed to get as fast as possible to the flank of the Space Wolves’ army. Elsewhere, the red painted Ork Trukks, carrying the Warboss and two Mobz, sped towards the centre of the field on cruising speed. The unfortunate Nob’s squad began to advance too now under the orders of a Weirdboy. The Weirdboy tried to use his unnatural powers but that did not work well for him as he was assaulted by invisible claws and teeth that tore at both his mind and his body. Still, despite the Orks’ massive advance, the army was still out of shooting range.

Turn 2

Seeing the Orks’ intents to get to grips with the Wolves on their own terms, the Wolf Lord Ranulf Ragnarson decided that two could play that game and signalled the Grey Hunter Packs to a tactical fallback behind the hills, while he and his Wolf Guard blocked the only large clear path that led behind the hills. Rune Priest Borg Blackbeard invoked the Spirit of the World Wolf once more and land where the Ork flying contraptions rested after their demanding flight, cracked open and one contraption fell to its doom but the rest were quick enough to fly away and escape their fate.
The Ork flyers, seeing their fellows’ demise rushed forward once more intent on blood and revenge, and landed on a hill close to the Wolves’ position, taking control of the flank. The two Ork Trukks under the command of the Warboss advanced more warily now sizing up the enemy and making sure they don’t get charged themselves. The Mob in the middle of the field continued to advance towards the Space Wolves’ positions frustrated by their footslogging while all the others were closing so fast on the enemy. The Weirdboy in the large Mob used the power flowing through its head to summon a psychic attack on the Wolves’ position but instead somehow managed to almost bring this to the heads of it’s fellows. The displeased Orks shouted and cursed at the Weirdboy but didn’t want to provoke his wrath and didn’t go any further. The Ork flying contraptions opened fire on the Grey Hunters lurking behind the hill and were rewarded with the sight of two Wolves falling down, clutching their wounds in agony.

Turn 3

The Wolves’ reaction to the Ork shooting was lighting fast: the Wolf Lord along with his Wolf Guard and the Rune Priest advanced sideways, while the Grey Hunters Pack under the command of Wolf Guard brother Hjalmar run through a small clear path towards the Ork Trukk carrying the Warboss’s unit and the Grey Hunters under brother Hallvardr moved up the hill in support of their brothers. Elsewhere, the Rune Priest, overexerting himself with effort, bade the World Wolf to show its fangs once more and the land cracked open to swallow three of the Ork flying machines that were landed on the hill. The last Ork flyer took off and fled, his nerve broken by nature’s onslaught. Brother Sture from Hjalmar’s Pack opened up with his meltagun but somehow the weapon failed to hit the Ork Trukk. Sture let a frustrating howl but knew he could do nothing more to help while his weapon cooled down.
The Ork Warboss saw the opening and seized his chance by advancing far enough to disembark and charge the stranded Wolves. Seeing this, the Orks in the other Trukk bellowed to their driver to get them within charging distance to the flanks of the exposed unit too. The Ork Mob in the middle of the field was keen to move forwards too not wanting to be left behind with no enemies to fight. The Ork flying machine continued to flee and left the battlefield, its Ork pilot mad with hysteria for what happened earlier. The Warboss and his two units of Boyz shot the exposed Wolves but failed to do any damage at all. The Weirdboy in the large Mob tried to use its warp magick but failed to harness the power flowing through him. Finally, the Warboss and his Orks charged the Space Wolves. The Wolves, seeing the Warboss’s charge, under the guidance of Hjalmar charged back towards the Orks. Brother Snorri leapt onto the Ork attackers, the Wulfen’s frenzy upon him, tearing and rending three Orks apart while the rest of the pack brought down seven more greenskins. The Orks fought back, wounding two Wolves. The two Nobz and the Warboss though, struck with their power claws and killed or incapacitated eight more of the Wolves’ numbers. Hjalmar being the only survivor of the Pack, struck at the Warboss with his powered fist but the beast’s bionic prosthetics somehow kept his going. All in all the two sides had lost equall numbers and none would step back, the Ork horde surrounding brave Hjalmar.

Turn 4

Seeing that his gambit had paid off- although at the cost of many of beloved battle brothers – the Wolf Lord sent the signal for the counter charge with a blood-curdling howl that his battle brothers took and magnified by a hundredfold. The Wolf Lord and his Wolf Guard moved towards the Orks behind the ruins while Hallvardr’s Grey Hunter Pack charged to the Orks in support to the beleaguered Hjalmar. The Wolves onslaught was ustoppable; all the Orks of the two Mobz apart from a lone Nob died in one fell swoop. Brother Aleifr managed to somehow wound the ferocious Warboss with his energised blade. Brother Hjalmar stuck at the remaining Nob with his powered fist and culled him, but was himself incapacitated- his powered fist severed from his shoulder by the Warboss’s own power claw. Brother Hallvardr avenged his brothers’ sacrifice by turning the Warboss’s head to paste with his thunder hammer. The Wolf Lord and his Wolf Guard Pack charged the Orks behind the ruins, slaying half the Mob in an anger fuelled rage. The remaining Orks struck back but Tactical Dreadnought Armour was proof against their petty attacks. Being fearless because of their numbers the Orks kept falling on the Wolves’ claws until only eight of them where left alive.
The Orks turn now looked fairly grim. With only two Trukks and a mangled Mob still in the fight they seemed to have next-to-zero chances of getting out of this debacle. The two Trukks sped away from the unit of Grey Hunters while the remaining Boyz prepared for one final stand against the Wolf Guard. The Wolf Lord struck the Orks with his mighty frostblade killing four, the Rune Priest failing to do any damage at all. Two of the Wolf guard lashed out at the boyz with their wolf claws killing three while brother Hroarr cut down the Weirdboy. The remaining boy tried to land a blow to the Wolf Lord but failed to do anything, and seeing he had no chance at all, chose to flee away from the Wolves.

Turn 5

With a loud bellow the Wolf Lord broke ranks from the Wolf Guard and caught up the little Ork trying to escape, bringing him to battle one on one, forcing him to fight for his life rather than let him escape. The Ork tried to parry the Wolf Lord’s blows but it was hopeless- Ranulf cut the wretch to pieces. A long, terrifying howl let out from the lips of every Wolf present, announced their victory over the Orks. In response the Ork Trukk drivers chose to flee the field, no doubt going back to the camp to spread the word to the rest of the greenskins that the Wolves were out hunting.

Reports had reached the Imperial forces at Ullanor that Ork technology in the system had been seen to advance more rapidly since the invasion had begun - indeed, most recently greenskins had been observed attempting to emulate the tactics of Imperial jump infantry, and marching in regimented groups. Whether this was an attempt to better better understand their human foes, or just to confuse them, remained to be seen.

The World Eaters legion in particular found this xenos activity to be most insulting, and their commanders soon traced it back to an abandoned pre-Imperial human settlement in the heart of the Ullanor system. It was entirely possible that the Orks had discovered some remains of STC technology, and this alone was sufficient to convince the other legions of the importance of an exploratory mission...

Several detachments of Scouts were dispatched to the surface, along with long-range communications devices supplied by the Mechanicum and mounted into a new Halcyon command Rhino. Their sweep of the ruined settlement revealed little of any value, but the recent presence of Orks was irrefutable. However, the large greenskin formation (now known to be called a 'Waaagh!' in their foul language) to the north had somehow detected the presence of the Imperial Scouts and was already moving in on the settlement to repel the invaders.

user posted image

Recalling all Scouts for evacuation, the World Eaters began to withdraw, knowing they were not yet prepared to face this foe. But the Orks seized the initiative and cut off the smaller Imperial units among the ruins.

user posted image

The more heavily armed Scouts made for whatever vantage points they could in order to lay down suppressing fire and buy their comrades more time to escape, but the squads caught out in the open were quickly run down by the xenos vanguard.

user posted image

In the confusion, the young World Eaters began to panic as the horde of greenskins enveloped them in a bloody melee. Before they could even reach the relative safety of the settlement, the rest of the Ork forces arrived en masse and tore them apart with a devastating barrage of fire.

user posted image
user posted image

Realising that they could well lose the entire recon division, the World Eaters commanders in orbit used the extrapolated data from the Halcyon to bombard the the greenskins' lines before dispatching a squad of Terminators to the surface to assist in the evacuation. Led by Chaplain Gerhardt Weiss, they appeared in a static flash upon the open plains to see the bodies of their kin littering the battlefield and yet more xenos on the march!

user posted image

Hoping to buy time for more reinforcements to reach their position, the Scouts who had survived the first and second waves of the Orks' assault charged from cover to harass the advance of their reserves... only to be faced by a trio of hulking walkers stomping towards the outlying ruins. Opening fire with what little weaponry they had, they seemed to succeed only in distracting the xenos for a few moments before they were cut to pieces.

user posted image
user posted image

With more than half their battle-brothers already lost, Weiss and the Terminators fanned out into a strong phalanx formation and laid into the nearest Ork mob.

user posted image

In a blaze of autocannon and bolter fire, they counter-charged and routed the brutes before they could recover, but instead of pursuing them Weiss ordered his men to fall back and await further instructions.

user posted image

No sooner had they taken up a defensive cordon, they were met by a rabble of armoured greenskins sporting crude rocket-based jump packs who shot towards them with roars of anger and a blaze of small arms fire. This was the very thing by which the World Eaters had been so infuriated - the xenos had clearly been learning from the superior methods of warfare employed by the Imperium, and now sought to parody them in an attempt to gain the upper hand...!

Such thoughts were shattered as the Ork Warboss led his retinue in a fearsome charge into the Terminators' flank, just as the rocketeers struck them head-on.

user posted image

Weiss could only watch as his men were encircled and cut down, but he incited them on to ever more brutal defiance of the xenos filth as they whirled their chainglaives in great bloody arcs which separated limbs from bodies and heads from shoulders.

user posted image

Within the settlement itself, Ancient Kargori strode towards the greenskin horde. Never in all his years of service in the Unification Wars had he expected to face such nightmarish filth in battle, and even less so from the armoured shell of a MK1 Dreadnought chassis. It was said that the Orks were learning the secrets of constructing walking machines, and he yearned to face such an abomination himself. But for now he was concerned with the looted Leman Russ battle tank which the Orks had recovered from some other battlefield and now turned upon its Imperial masters.

As the iron beast belched petrochem fumes and loosed a great battlecannon shell at the Scouts cowering in the taller ruins, Kargori crashed into its armoured flank and tore the turret from the hull. Ammunition detonated within, and he fired a jet of blazing promethium into the crew compartment. His efforts were rewarded by the feral screams of dying Orks as they tried to pull themselves from the wreck, but he stood ready with his powered claw to stop them.

user posted image

As Weiss and the last of the Terminators fell, the remaining World Eaters realised that this mission was doomed. They had underestimated the strength of the Ork Warboss' forces on this planet, and even now more primitive war machines - twisted parodies of Imperial designs and looted vehicles taken from other skirmishes - approached from the east.

user posted image

Signalling a general retreat, the Halcyon Rhino began to reverse from the front lines but was struck by a fusillade of rockets which pierced its armour and silenced its vox-casters permanently. In the momentary confusion, the rest of the World Eaters reinforcements floundered in the teeth of the Orks' combined firepower as the few surviving Scouts attempted to disengage.

user posted image

Ancient Kargori was rattled by slug fire, and whirled on the spot to face his attackers - the Warboss and his retinue were upon him in moments, powered weapons scything through his fuel lines and power conduits. His guns fell silent, and the xenos sent him crashing to the ground in an end most unfit for a hero of the Imperium.

user posted image

Attempting to avoid heavy bolter fire from the Scouts high up in the ruins, one of the advancing Ork walkers stumbled on the wreckage of the Rhino and collapsed onto its face, gears and pistons snapping in its legs as it fell. The greenskin pilot threw open his rear hatch and received a deadly bolt to the head for his trouble.

user posted image

Nonetheless, the remaining walkers began to encircle the Astartes as they attempted to withdraw, raking them with fire and flexing their huge powered claws menacingly.

user posted image

Still awaiting some miracle to save them, the remaining Scouts suddenly realised that they had no clear route of escape from the ruins and that Orks were already scaling the walls to reach them. A number of frantic melees erupted as they tried desperately to fight their way clear in the face of the green tide.

Taking horrific casualties as they scrambled clear, the Scouts fell from the walls and were caught in return fire from the hooting and jeering xenos who began to throw rocks and whatever else came to hand after them.

Intelligence gathered from the World Eaters signalled important an important Ork construction facility. Captain Tarvitz of the Emperor's Children was assigned by his superiors to move swiftly to recover any STC data and destroy Ork capabilities. The World Eaters who had been seriously mauled insisted in accompanying this mission, embarrassed by their previous losses and hungry for vengeance. The infuriating aloofness of their battle brothers of the Emperor's Children Legion also galled them into a killing fury.

The initial column of combined Legions approached Mektown from the Southwest and orbital scans identified a key power generating facility. While the road way to Mektown was secured for following Mechanicum operatives to enter a huge horde of Orks poured forth from the twisted, crude buildings.
user posted image

The sweeping tide surged forward accompanied by the din of shootas fired wildly into the air and roar of engines. The acute senses of the Astartes recognised a sharp crack in the midst of the noise and realised with grim satisfaction that the scouts of the World Eaters had not been idle. The rocket pack orks had touched down into a forward post riddled with cluster mines which tore half the mob to pieces. Two groups of WE scouts had taken places on each flank ahead of the main party and hunkered down awaiting the storm of greenskins they had already experienced first hand.
user posted image

The World Eaters fury was held in check as Orbital Strikes were ordered and fire laid down by the mighty dreadnaught, brother Niklaus and a detachment of World Eaters Terminators. The objective was immediately cleared and the leading Ork Truk reduced to flaming wreckage.

The chug of rotor blades was heard over the horizon as Koptas screamed down taking vengeance on brother Niklaus launching a full salvo into the ancient dreadnaught causing a massive explosion. Meanwhile one remaining rocket pack ork makes it to the scouts on the right flank. They take bloody vengeance on him, hacking the greenskin to pieces.

Scoutbikers a land speeder and tactical marines push forward to link up with the scouts on the left and drive home their early advantage.

At this point the Emperor's Children judge it the correct time and place to apply force as a squad of 1st Company Terminators deepstrike at the enemies rear and unleash a hail of bolts.

As soon as the word came that victory was assured and the last stragglers of the orks had been dispatched, a new message came through. Urgent reinforcement needed in sector Alpha 9LD, weakened defences had caused the greenskins to start looting supply dumps. The mechanicum would have to finish off here.......

Seeing the battle erupt on top of the shrine, the warboss bellows 'WAAAAGH' which is echoed by the rest of his warband. Sergeant Tarjal's beleaguered tactical squad manages to cut down another 'ard boy, before being slaughtered by the rampaging warboss and nobz. The tankbustas' rockets finally hit their target, destroying a sponson and the turret of the second predator.

The stormboyz ignite their rocket packs and hurtle towards the terminators, while the squad of shoota boyz appear from behind the wood. Caught in a vicious crossfire, three terminators are gunned down. The remaining two terminators are only able to kill two of the speeding stormboyz, before another of the White Scars is overwhelmed by the mob of boyz behind him. Targutai easily deflects the stormboyz' attacks, unnerving the diminished mob and causing them to flee.

Biting back his desire for vengeance, Sergeant Remujin orders his squad to re-embark into their rhino, which immediately heads for the wood. Furious at the death of his brothers, the land raider driver crashes the huge tank straight onto the shrine and into the mass of orks.

The predators steadily advance, their weapons firing continuously, tearing apart all but one of the tankbustas and immobilising a kan.

Skimming around the edge of the wood, the land speeder opens fire with the heavy flamer again, immolating two more orks. Targutai and the remaining terminator avenge themselves on the ork mob, but only manage to kill three before the rest panic and run.

On the shrine, the nobz attack the land raider with their power klaws, tearing off tracks, before the warboss's klaw tears through a fuel tank and lascannon capacitor bank. A colossal explosion annihilates the land raider, also killing a nob and two 'ard boyz in the blast. Flames leaping from his klaw and armour plates, the warboss roars amidst the destruction.

The last tankbusta ducks between the waving arms of the kans and hides, while grot riggers swarm over the trailing leg of the immobilised kan. With a hiss of steam, the pistons judder back into life.

Bursting through the pillars, the warboss dives down onto the predator below. As its power klaw tears through the armour, the ammo hoppers ignite, ripping the predator apart in a storm of shrapnel.

Sergeant Remujin's tactical squad secure the xenos totem and purge it with fire. The land speeder chases the stormboyz and shoota boyz out of the area, while the rhino continues to pursue the last remaining orks. Grinning madly, an ork fires its rocket while running away, which inconceivably hits the land speeder, destroying the heavy flamer.

The remaining predator tank shocks the orks on the shrine. A nob roars its defiance and swings its power klaw at the tank, but only hits a ringing blow off the front armour.

"Are you sure that the artefact has been destroyed?" voxed Sergeant Remujin. "Yes, brother-sergeant" came the reply, "I drove straight over the damn thing". "Acknowledged" said Remujin with a grim smile. "Reinforcements will be arriving shortly to allow us to retrieve the fallen."
