Title: Luna Wolves codex?
Lunasteve - May 3, 2010 10:43 AM (GMT)
need a little advice, all ive got so far are a dread and two characters, but now i have someone who is gonna teach me the rules i need to start building a proper army. my question - which codex do i use for the Luna Wolves? ive got SM, CSM, and SW but am unsure.
Feytor - May 3, 2010 10:54 AM (GMT)
Space wolf codex would be great.

I use the standard marine codex, it has a wider array of units to choose from.
As well as access to Drop Pod Transports.
If you want to have a "Fluffy" army on the table, it's easy to put some minor restrictions on yourself and still have access to some really good units.
I did us the Chaos Marine one originally, but felt the standard marine codex was closer to how they would play. Especially the Dreadnoughts..
On using the Space Wolf codex, their characters are rather strong, the Grey Hunters are excellent, however one drawback is, if you want to use Jump Pack troops to represent a squad like the Catulan Reavers and being forced to use WS 3 Blood Claws.
Also the Luna Wolves weren't total savages like the Space Puppies are.
Hope this helps. ;)

i see what you mean, which is why i was originaly going to use the SM codex, but what would i do about abbadon and certain weapons that choas use ( which would have been used by the luna wolves) and what would you do about librarians and chaplains?
fritzagelmann - May 3, 2010 02:55 PM (GMT)
Find a character that has a similar feel or make one of your own. there's no reason why you cant just use a marine captain as Abadon.
Many use the rules for Cato Sicarius as a heresy captain, such as Loken or Aximond, Pedro Kanto is another solid choice.
pre-heresy librarians were not common, specially after they were outlawed, lol. Same holds true for chaplains, they weren't around.

The great thing about the Luna Wolves is that they fought next to every other legion.
If you want to include a Librarian, you could just include a Thousand Son. (like I have done.);)
Or you could have a Luna Wolves Librarian and just say your force is pre-nikea.
Horus is to canny a Tactician to have not seen the usefulness of them on the battle field.

yeah Yvraith your right! i can just paint up these characters in other chapters colours(black and blue  ), think thats what i'll do. only thing left is abbadon, i see what fritz means about using a chaptermasters stats but i think abbadon is better than that. hes gotto be tougher than a chapter master, i would think a normal chapter master only looks after about 1000 blokes, which is what a normal pre-heresy captain would have commanded. characters like abbadon, sigismund, eidolon and others ( first company captains?) would be somewhere between a primarch and a normal captain? maybes calgar would be the only 40k equivalent.
sorry to blab on about it but im not too hot with the rules
fritzagelmann - May 3, 2010 07:25 PM (GMT)
during heresy times they weren't black and blue, lol. The only chap to have chaplains was the world bearers and their armor would have been gray.
Libys of the times would be in the colors of their chapter. I personally love the idea of a luna wolf liby, and sense your goign with luna wolfs and not sons of horus it makes sense that he would be there.
Abbadon is weak, lol, I can't stand him, so the whole power thing makes no difference to me. In all honesty I think calgar is all wrong for him, the special rules, the armament, none of it fits.
Lunasteve - May 3, 2010 07:36 PM (GMT)
yeah, calgar doesnt match abbadon and neither do any other stats in the SM codex :) and other legions did have chaplains didnt they? theres zahariels cousin? and the emperors children one that lucius killed? not sure ive heard of any others except those and the obvious word bearer ones.
Azkaellon - May 3, 2010 08:58 PM (GMT)
Was the chaplain eddict a result of nikea to police the legions for libbys or for libbys lossing it at least.
the libbys were few in the legions i thought and only a few legions had librarian dept before nikea....
my view at least please correct me if (because) im wrong
fritzagelmann - May 3, 2010 10:02 PM (GMT)
I honestly don't know much about when the chaplains poped up, but the world bearers were rebuked for their worship of the umporer, and thats the chap's job.
In the thousand sons book it list I think like 8 of the legions having libys at nikea

i think what i'll do is make the models anyway and depending on the fluff level of the game will decide if i can use them or not :)
while im here i have another question :) for abbadon, would you give his honour gaurd close combat weapons or ranged ones? i was thinking close combat because im gonna want to drop abbadon right into the thick of battle. arent i? ;)
Feytor - May 5, 2010 10:22 AM (GMT)
Combat character should have combat bodyguards amirite? Or if you want to stay somewhere and shoot and Abbadon will stand doing nothing, go with ranged.
Yvraith - May 5, 2010 10:42 AM (GMT)
That would depend on which codex you decide to go with.
If you stick with CSM - I'd take a squad of Terminator Champions (giving them 3 attacks as standard.) then take a mix of ranged & close combat weapons.
If you want to make them really vicious, you could give them an icon of khorne for +1 attack each (crazy number of attack dice!:D) or even Slaanesh for +1 initiative allowing them to strike before regular marine units.
If you are using Codex-SM I'd go with an Assault terminator squad.
Using the "Puppies dex" a nicemix should do it, probably with wolf claws predominantly.
On the chaplain thing, for the Luna Wolves, the Mournival seems to have served in some respects, in a similar role not in regards to enforcing the Nikean edict, but serving as the soul of the legion.
I think that Librarians of that time would of worn mostly their own legion colours, maybe with some sort of icon to designate their status.

cheers mate, im gonna stick with your advice and go SM codex, seems the sensible thing. i have another question :D ive ordered pre-heresey helmets and jump packs for my reavers, looking it up on the net, reavers means - One who reaves. Archaic term for one who despoils, plunders, bereaves, takes with violence. i had in my head, skulls, chains and nasty blades etc, how would you model a reaver?
Yvraith - May 7, 2010 11:29 AM (GMT)
I'm glad you asked. :)
Here's one I did a little while ago.
He's my take on Kalus Ekkaddon actually. ;)
Maybe he'll help you with some inspiration.
I really should get off my ass and finish the rest of his squad mates.
Brother Ludovic - May 23, 2010 03:21 PM (GMT)
Wow, that one is nice! And yeah, it would be ace if you finished off the squad ;)
Lunasteve - May 23, 2010 03:27 PM (GMT)
yeah very nice mate, the skulls tie in with my thoughts on reavers, and yeah, his squad mates would be nice to see :)
MrBojab - June 18, 2010 12:11 PM (GMT)
You can have uber jump troops for SW all you do is get a squad of wolf guard with jump packs and that is pretty much as good if not better than Vanguard Vets. I vote C:SW.
