Title: Death guard lists
Description: What book?, what core to use?

Eldanesh - March 2, 2010 03:42 PM (GMT)
Hey all, I've been trying to decide for a while now how to portray deathguard on the field. I want a take an hold footsloggers list, that much is clear, but I'm not sure how to balance competitiveness with fluff. For instance, is giving rhinos (light armor/ infy support) to the troops frowned upon? Because from a competitive standpoint they seem popular. How about the weapon load outs for squads? Anyway there's a lot to chew on hear but any comments are criticism, advice etc are appreciated.

Rhinos are not really a deathguard thing, really any vehicle isn't. They tend to stick with devestators for anti tank punch, and walk a lot. Maybe the occasional dread or drop pod, but it should be a pretty rare site.

The space pup list looks ok, but again I would drop the rhinos. I think this is one of the few codex that will allow you to really use a lot of the fluffyness for the guard, such as 2 special weapons. That said a lot of the special pup rules simple do not wit the guard.

second list looks fine and helps with some of the resilience aspects of the guard, however I noticed you took no chosen, how do you plan to deal with enemy armor?

I don't like the third list, squads of 20 will not give you the mobility needed in a competitive game.

I'm having trouble seeing how I could deal with a vehicle gunline then I guess.
Well I could divide the termies into 3 and give all combi meltas, "mini deathshrouds."
But still, the only long range longfang option is lascannons and the fact they don't get extra guys in squads is pretty annoying.

I agree that Rhinos are very much not DG. The previous Chaos codex actually had mounted DG squads take up Fast Attack slots is more than 2 Rhinos were taken! SW Terminators are good but in order for the ones you're proposing to be effective they should probably have drop pods, since they can't teleport and have short-range weapons. I would suggest switching one squad, and most of the Rhinos, to Long Fangs. Despite their shortcomings the ability to split fire is very handy, cover saves are easily avaiable, and missiles are like 10 points each. 6 with 4 missiles and a lascannon costs as much as 5 Havocs with 4 missiles and the fire can be split.

Wanting to make a solid footslogging list myself using the SW codex for Thunder Warriors here's what I've come up with at 2000 while hoping to stay slightly competitive:
Rune Priest, Storm Caller, Living Lightning
Wolf Priest, plasma pistol
2x5 Scouts, meltagun, plasma pistol, Wolf Guard, combi-melta, combi-flamer
5x10 Grey Hunters, meltagun, plasma gun
15 Blood Claws, flamers, power fist, Wolf Guard, power fist
3x6 Long Fangs, lascannon, 4 missile launchers

Plasma pistols -> Useless waste of precious points ;) .

I think a plasma pistol not that much of a waste when your face to face with a Dread or light armoured vehicle. Better chance of hitting the thing than a melta bomb.

Sure but emm why not to use anti-tank weapons agains the vehicles? Meltagun for 10 points has better anti-tank potential than plasma pistol for 15 points. Ofc you can say oh I'd pick another special weapon instead of melta when I have plasma pistol but why not to use combi-weapon for special ocasion? ex. flamer for horde encounter or melta for additional anti-tank.

Combi weapon can only fire once, if you miss that's it. Heavy weapons as you say would do the trick but there maybe multiple targets that require their attention. The melta is a good weapon but there is always the chance you miss with everything (it's happened to me) especially when a dread is bearing down on you. It's always good to have a back up.

If you have 15pts spare why not? :)

The idea with the plasma pistols that I added was to get a little extra AT in the Scouts. They have a melta and combi-melta already, and with a 3+ to come in behind vehicles that extra S7 shot could make a big difference on rear armor, and get a little boost once the combi-melta has been expended.

Hey, thanks for the comments, so lets add some new concepts to the discussion!
Idea: termies as mobile AT platforms as well as inf support:

DG ver2 (SW)
--Need HQ--
5 termies, cyclone 195pts
5 termies, cyclone 195pts
5 termies, cyclone 195pts
10 grey hunters melta, free plasma 155pts
10 grey hunters melta, free plasma 155pts
10 grey hunters melta, free plasma 155pts
10 grey hunters melta, free plasma 155pts
10 grey hunters melta, free plasma 155pts
6 long fangs, 5 missile launchers 140pts

1500pts

Thoughts? I still have 200pts remaining to upgrade my squad leader or my termies as well as get that hq (which I really don't care too much about).

lord_caldera - March 3, 2010 12:59 AM (GMT)
I think that's a better loadout for SW Terminators in an infantry list. For the remaining 200 points I would take a WGBL with Terminator armor and wolf tail talisman for slight psychic defense for his squad, and the remaining points on a pair of Rhinos for a little extra mobility, maybe for reserves objective grabbing, and to upgrade one missile to a lascannon.

Hey all, I'll post up on my blog soon, but here is a finalized list:

DG ver2 (SW)
Battle leader with termy armor and powerfist 130pts
5 termies,powerfist cyclone 205pts
5 termies,powerfist,cyclone 205pts
5 termies, powerfist,cyclone 205pts
10 grey hunters melta, power weapon, free plasma 170pts
10 grey hunters melta, power weapon, free plasma 170pts
10 grey hunters melta, power weapon, free plasma 170pts
10 grey hunters melta, power weapon, free plasma 170pts
10 grey hunters melta, power weapon, free plasma 170pts
6 long fangs, 4 missle launchers, 1 lascannon 155pts

1750pts exact

2000pts upg=
5 skyclaws with melta 100pts
+ wolf guard with jump pack, combi melta, power weapon 58pts

OR 6th grey hunter quad, rest of points get wolf lord, upgrade stuff.

fritzagelmann - May 27, 2010 02:54 PM (GMT)
The only thing that I am not sold on is the mixture of weapons in the hunter squads. Meltas and plasmas have very different life goals and putting them together kind of negates their specialty. I would personally run the squads with either 2 plasma or 2 melta, but not one of each.
