Title: What is the best sourcebook to begin with?

I apologise if this has been asked umpteen time already, but I used the search engine and couldn't get any decent results.

Also, to be more specific, I'd like it if there was as much fluff, pictures and other resources for the Imperial Army in the book, seeing as how they seem to be a little under presented in GW lore I guess this could be a tall order.

Cheers all the same!

What do you mean by "sourcebook"? There is no official pre-Heresy gaming source material... we take what we can from the HH novels and the 'Visions' art books.

GW's official stance on all things PH is "it doesn't exist any more by the time you get to M41 so therefore we do not promote it in any way".

Sorry, I play a lot of historical wargames too :P .I take "sourcebook" to mean something similar to the 13th Black crusade book (not the codex) or the Osprey series of books on older military units (not the best but most well known). It's not a gaming guide, but a source of fluff and artwork. I'm aware of the novels but I've been led to believe that they focus more on the Space Marines rather than the Imperial Army.

For pictures, the Collected Visions book is your best bet - you want the complete version which includes all three parts. Very limited background, but the only place (so far) you are going to find any Imperial Army artwork.

The only novel that really covers the Imperial Army in any detail is Legion, so it may be worth getting a hold of that. Has plenty of detail on one regiment (Geno Five-Two Chilead) and sparse details on several others.

Finally, this thread will hopefully be useful - it pulls together as much info on 'official' regiments mentioned so far in one place.

I used the search engine

For background stuff, the easiest way to find things is the FAQ thread at the top of this section. If its a topic that has come up a few times before, it'll probably be mentioned there.

Wow, I just remembered that I have a stack of WW2 German books by Osprey, sat somewhere in storage. Must go and find them at some point...
