Did Pre Heresy Blood Angels have Yellow (Assault) and Blue (Devastator) helmets?

B. We don't know
More complex answer:
A. The vast majority of BA assault squads in the artwork have red helmets, although there are one or two examples with gold/yellow helmets. Presumably most standard assault squads did not have yellow helmets in the pre-heresy period, though maybe honour guard/veteran assault squads would have had them.
B. There are no pictures of BA devastator squads in the artwork, so we have no way of knowing. Seeing as it seems probable that the BA coloured helmet system was not in use pre-heresy as it is today (see A) I'd go with red helmets... plus it helps differentiate between pre-heresy BA and the post-heresy version.

Actually, I believe there was a system of using playing card symbols. So the Clubs, Spade, Heart and Diamond. I can't remember what they represent though, sorry. But I'm sure this was the system.

You mean this system
Problem with that idea is that is ancient background, from the first edition of Adeptus Titanicus. Certainly seems to have been abandoned now, as witnessed by the fact that none of the example symbols crop up anywhere in the more recent pre-heresy artwork.
Besides which, the playing card symbols was the Salamanders anyway :P

As Red Sorceror stated, and the fact that the article does say that the symbols were used for the battle mentioned and probably just that one.
But what i find interesting is the colours used, Blue and Yellow. A possible link to the later helmet colours?
You could at least use that as an example and use those colurs to indicate Assault and Devastators in ways other than colouring their helmets. Just an idea.

Another argument you could make for blue helmets is that GW like to shoe-horn bits of Rogue Trader era stuff into Pre-Heresy.. if we did see some more artwork, or read about it in a novel, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see it..

One good way to differentiate might be to have different coloured blood drop insignia on the opposite pad to the Legion symbol - blue for Devastator, yellow for assault, white or gold for vetarans? Would help tie in with the colours used today. There are examples in the artwork of marines with different coloured blood drops on their left pad, so it would tie in with 'official' representations of pre-heresy BA as well.
