Sadly, what we know about the Huscarls is limited to one brief reference in The Lightning Tower that refers to 'Dorn's Huscarl retinue'. Presumably they are a bodyguard unit of some sort, and we know they are led by Archamus. Thats it as far as official info goes.

We can assume that they were probably drawn from the 1st Company, in which case their colour scheme would most likely have been yellow armour, Imperial Fist symbol in the standard place, and the Templar Cross on a black and white pad on the other side both to show their Captain's heraldry (Sigismund) and denote their vetaran status. Horus Rising and The Dark King confirm that both Sigismund and the 1st Company wore yellow armour with black heraldry, so this definitely seems the best way to represent them.

I envisage them wearing fur in some manner, looking a bit more feral than the average Imperial Fists. I think this is because my brain equates "huscarl" with vikings...

From Wikipedia:

Huscarls/Housecarls were household troops, personal warriors and equivalent to a bodyguard to Scandinavian lords and kings.

I'd pinch a few bits from the SW sprues, and try to tie it in with the fur cloak that Dorn is described as wearing in The Lightning Tower.

Just remember not to confuse Imperial Fist Huscarls with Death Guard Housecarls!...It could be embarrassing having your elite Imperial Fist unit looking like the Death Guards servants!

The Imperial Fist's First Company is also distinguished by black trim on the armour:

QUOTE (The Flight of the Eisenstein @ Page 331)
Sigismund and the other Imperial Fists in the black-trimmed armour of the First Company were as still as statues

Also in Tales of Heresy it states that:

QUOTE (Tales of Heresy @ Page 52)
Six of them were Adeptus Astartes in full battle armour, instantly recognisable as huscarls of the Imperial Fists.

So whatever their distinguishing armour/colour scheme/mark etc was; the excerpt suggests that it was somthing that was unique and instantly recognisable.

this is all really good stuff guys cheers! B)

seeein as it is all pretty non-discriptive would it be wise to suggest that the colour/iconography of the huscarls could be left to artistic license?

im thinking old mk's (perhaps 2 or 3?) of armour in polished gold with black trim and fists icon's and snow leopard fur draped over their shoulders?

I'm thinking Mk III armour would be by far the most appropriate - certain Legions apparently favoured it for ceremonial guards (sounds like the Huscarls to me!) and the Imperial Fists would almost certainly have been one of these Legions seeing as Mk III fitted in with their siege warfare mentality anyway.

I think entirely gold armour for a bodyguard unit might be a bit over the top, at least for the Imperial Fists - leave that sort of thing for the Blood Angels. After all, even Sigismund himself, Captain of the 1st and most senior in the Legion after Dorn, still seems to wear yellow armour going by the novels.

After all, with ornate Mk III armour and pelts/animal skins, along with the Templar Cross incorperated into their heraldry, they should be looking fairly distinctive already...

That description sounds good to me!
You might consider using the Fantasy Chaos Warriors set for fur-trimmed and archaic-looking armour.

The 14th Expedition - December 8, 2011 09:34 PM (GMT)
I considered Huscarls wearing yellow MKIII Iron Armour, but armed with power swords and shields of some description, seeing as the Imperial Fists were fans of using swords (the Forgeworld ones from the Boarding Assault Upgrade set might be useful).
Sorry about the thread necromancy... but since I'm plotting a version of Hucarls for my Imperial Fists I felt an opinion was needed.
