Title: Dark Angels army format 28/5/09
DiSTudios - May 28, 2009 11:54 AM (GMT)
Due to time constraints I am planning to return to my original army of Dark Angels. I just need a little C&C on my choices to make sure that I am heading in the right directions.
Here are my thoughts on the army I am creating:
Terran predominance - I really like the old colour scheme from RTB01 and as a result am using black with red symbols and the red stripe down the helmet
Caliban recruits - My friend Mjol has told me that green shoulder pads represent Caliban inductees but I read another source stating that Johnson began using full Green for his Caliban Inductees. Which is more viable?
Banners - the original Dark Angel banners I have seen from the past editions depict the shattered sword and the fallen angel. What would the pre-heresy style banners look like? and also would they differ for Terran inducted? Right now I am considering a sword over a planet with the lightning bolt as a campaign badge.
thanks for reading

Before they reached Caliban they were the First Legion, so maybe the banners and iconography of the Terran Astartes would reflect this.
Maybe with the winged sword of the Dark Angels added in some way.
And if you want to carry the style of modelling your doing to any Ravenwing contingent, may I suggest you look at WHFB mounted Chaos Knights. Their legs look like they'd do as ravenwing biker legs, with only a bit of modification.

@Gagoc The Ancient - Thanks for your input, depsite using Chaos warriors for the core infantry I had actually overlooked the Chaos Knights for my Ravenwing lol!
I have colated some info for the insignias and other then the usual RTB01 rankings I will be using what looks like the Unification wars Chapter banner which I found on the Darkfortress forum.
Basically its a black banner with a red border and the chapter symbol on a white circle. The intention is to add the Lightning bolt campaign icon ontop of a planet.
I will hopefully post a demo of it on my blog so you guys can can C&C it.
thanks for replying, time to look at the Chaos knights :P

If you are really going to make your army as authentic as possible you need to read 'Descent of Angels' and 'Tales of Heresy' both have great background for the Dark Angels. The story in Tales of Heresy notes that the Calibanite Dark Angel had black armour with a green back drop to the legion symbol.
I'm interested - what's your source saying they had all green armour?
The following are post heresy designs for Dark Angels
Shattered sword - Only used by Death Wing company as the broken sword represent the broken oaths of the 'fallen' (but who are truly the fallen?!?!)
Feathers - adopted from recruits taken from Plains World (a native American style planet)

I have decided to bite the bullet and opt for a Pre-Johnson army. This will save me time and confusion trying to get things accurate. You've known me for too long, the smallest unknown detail can put my work back months.
I will read the books at some point, but since I am focusing purely on Terran inductees I will be using the all black armour, red insignia (rather then the white post recovery of Johnson) and nose stripes. From a fluff point of view and this is to justify the use of the MK IV (which puts the army at the end of the Unification wars and thus post Johnson discovery), I am theming the army as a all terran chapter that Johnson is "watching" so no Ravenwing, no Deathwing just good all Emperor loyal Terran marines...in Dark Angels Legion colours.
Am avoiding feathers altogether as they fall out of the time-line I am using.
Cheers for taking interest in my random musings

Sounds like a good plan to me.

The Deathwing was a post-heresy development anyway. The Unification wars actually only covers the conquest of Terra and perhaps the Solar system - Mk IV armour puts them towards the end of the Great Crusade itself.
I'd use the standard Dark Angel symbol, but I like the idea of having it in red to reflect a Terran Chapter. One idea might be to come up with your own interpretation of the Legion's iconography from before they became the Dark Angels, and use it on personal banners, heraldry and the like, while keeping the standard symbol (in red) for shoulder pads. Definitely avoid using the feathers.
@Mjol - I'm pretty sure the shattered sword is usually said to represent the 'Lion Sword', which was shattered during El'Jonson's battle with Luther. Of course, it could represent both.

Bit of threadromancy here - Its still warm - But the symbol in my avatar is from Dark Fortress, a Dark Angels resource site. They claim this to be a RT/pre heresy symbol.
They have decal packs, banner packs etc.http://www.thedarkfortress.co.uk/hq/hq.htm

On a random note,
After reading Fallen Angels I need to give my terrans a new haircut lol! Nemiel is said to copy the Dark Angel Terran Veterans by braiding his hair along the neck..now is that cane rows or a single long braid
The confusion continues! :ph43r:
