That's an excellent reference for painting (and perhaps conversion) purposes. Great start.
I've always liked this look. Maybe it's my fondness for the Romans.
Yvraith - February 2, 2008 04:23 AM (GMT)
A Luna Wolf Captain of the IXth Company.
A Tactical Marine.
These were painted in the following fashion.
Spray undercoated black, then a basecoats of Astronomican Gray for the white (blacklining all the way), Chaos Black for the Trim on the Shoulder Pads, Scab Red for the Red, Burnished Gold and Boltgun Metal as appropriate.
All of the Black parts were then washed with Black Wash, Gold with Chestnut Wash, Boltgun metal with Armour wash.
A mix of Astronomican Gray and Skull White (I just mixed this by eye) was then painted over the Astro Gray, Crimson gore over the Scab Red, and touched up parts of the metal with Burnished gold and Mithral Silver.
The parchment was basecoated Vomit brown, Washed with Flesh wash, a coat of bleached bone leaving the darker colours in the recesses, with a final coat of Skull white. Writing is just black ink.
I highlighted the White areas with a light coat of Skull White, Red areas with Blood Red, Gold with Shining Gold, Black with a light dash of Adeptus Battlegrey.
For the eyes think eldar gemstone technique.
Once the Eyes and Wax seals were dry they were given a coat of Gloss varnish.
Transfers were then applied.

Those are gorgeous, Yvraith. I especially love the red plume on the captain and the generally Roman look!

Again, great stuff man. Should make some good reference for the finished article.
Iacton - February 11, 2008 12:36 PM (GMT)
Posted in another thread but I guess this is where he lives :)
Old School 1 piece MK3 (acquired from ebay) stripped and redone.
Armour colour is based on GW foundation "Astronomican Grey" blended up to white.
GS Eye of Horus and Wolf Pelt on shoulder. Freehand LW insignia.

Every miniature here is drop dead gorgeous. Would be proud to have them on my tabletop. These are again the sorts of clear, crisp paintjobs that will be most useful for the VCP.
All I'd ask of you guys, if you have the time, would be to perhaps share a few lines about how you built them and what colors you used. That would go a long way toward helping someone attempt the look.
Yvraith - February 12, 2008 12:29 PM (GMT)
I edited my post to include how I painted them, is that what you were after?
The modeling bit for the Captain is rather complicated, to be honest I sort of fluked it on the first go. But I could provide a parts list if you want.

My newest addition to my Sons of Horus army...Every insignia is painted by the hand and I was inspired by HH artbooks. Comments are as always welcome...

Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus characters:
residual-selfimage - May 14, 2008 08:31 AM (GMT)
Great topic for inspiration! :D
I'm starting a Luna Wolves army myself and this definately helps! Finding out which pieces of armour were worn by the Luna Wolves before the Heresy can be quite a problem HAHAHA!
Did the Luna Wolves wear MKIV armour right before they got renamed to The Sons of Horus?
If so then buying the Red Scorpions upgrade set from FW would be the best solution to jumpstart a beginning Luna Wolves army right?
I also have a lot of Chaos bits left, I believe a lot of helmets can easily be converted into the ones worn during the Luna Wolves era (not to mention some 'beakies')
Weiss - May 14, 2008 08:48 AM (GMT)
Pre-heresy, beakies would not have been available (though some like to pass them off as experimental...). MkIV would seem to be the standard for the Luna Wolves just before the renaming (at least that's the impression I got from the books).
residual-selfimage - May 14, 2008 10:06 AM (GMT)
Nice one :D Thnx for the fast reply mate! :D
Ok, so no beakies... but then the Red Scorpion FW set WOULD be ideal for creating a Luna Wolves army :D
At least, I was thinking about doing them True-Scale, I wonder how much of use that FW set will be if I descide on that...
Weiss - May 14, 2008 10:25 AM (GMT)
Well the heads will still be usable, though the chests would be best used as a guide for the shapes, etc... (you don't want to model over a chestpiece that cost that much...). You may be better off ordering just the MkIV black templar head from one of the bits suppliers instead...
residual-selfimage - May 14, 2008 10:36 AM (GMT)
Yeh, point taken, I believe the Red Scorpion set is around 22 euro, quite expensive, if I just want to model over it, indeed.
I'll try to do 5 true-scale ones with the Black Templar helmets and if that doesn't work out I can always do them Non-truescale with the Red Scorpion ones :D
Thnx a lot mate :D Helped me out a lot! :D

Some new artwork from the upcoming Forge World Book, "Horus Heresy: Betrayal" of a Sons of Horus Legionnaire, looking quite lethal in his Mk V 'Heresy' Amour:
Algrim Whitefang - September 16, 2012 05:34 AM (GMT)
Without further ado, I present more Sons of Horus goodness from the upcoming Forge World book 'Horus Heresy: Betrayal':
Luna Wolves Legionnaire
Loyalist Sons of Horus from Istvaan III
Sons of Horus Assault Marine
Pict-capture from Istvaan III Atrocity of a Sons of Horus Predator 'Deimos' pattern tank

Luna Wolves on the left!
Markus Krell - September 19, 2012 10:06 AM (GMT)
That picture is epic, where's it from? That would look great on the cover of a HH novel.

If anyone can post the remaining images of the Sons of Horus from Betrayal that would be of great help.
The SoH Rhino
and we dont yet have images on the web of around 4 of the leggionares found in the Sons of Horus section. (ones with skulls, and the one on the left above them)
Algrim Whitefang - November 2, 2012 05:45 AM (GMT)
Ask and ye' shall receive:
Sons of Horus Sergeant Guljuk Ygethddon - Commanded a Despoiler Squad of the 9th Battle Company. Note: Customised 'Maximus' pattern power armour. Cthonian glyph markings and helmet plume (native gang-sign origins): Human skull dipped in gold typically carried as a trophy of a dead enemy leader or champion.
Unknown Loyalist, Istvaan III Atrocity. Note: Armour assembled from several patterns and different suits - likely including battlefield scavenging during attrition campaign. Former Sons of Horus heraldry largely defaced in wake of betrayal. Severe battlefield injuries sustained.
Unknown Legion 'Chieftain' of the Catulan Reaver Company. Elite status denoted by distinctive black armour specialising harrowing actions and hit-and-run tactics. Note: Extensive Cthonian Glyph markings, variant 'Eye of Horus' icon thought to denote inclement in cult activity. Use of the Cthonian serpent-eye variant glyph in place of typical 'Eye of Horus' iconography.
Sons of Horus Section leader Dastruak Judd (Traitor) Note: Legion issue 'Maximus' armour with early model Sol-Harrier type Jump pack unit. Sarum pattern helm. Chest armour displays leonine marquetry commemorative of campaigns fought to reclaim the Segmentum Solar.
Unknown Sons of Horus Legionary. Iconography denotes part of Heavy Support 'Devastator' Squad. Note: Modified 'Iron' Pattern armour with weapon-slaved targeting monocular: Incurred bolt damage to right shoulder plate and backpack unit venting.
Sons of Horus Legionary Avakhol Hurr. Part of the Legion's Rukal Breacher Battalion, which was primarily employed as a support assault contingent during boarding actions and siege operations. Note: 'Iron' Pattern armour, which is particularly suited in design to close-quarter, high-threat environments. The Rukal customarily preserved any blood spray from their previous engagements to decorate their armour, as a visible sign of their destructive intent.
Sons of Horus Lieutenant Kloros Endall. A Terran and veteran of the former Luna Wolves incarnation of the XVI Legion. Part of the first wave of the Istvaan III assault. Endall presumably was slain during the betrayal. Note: 'Maximus' pattern late Legiones Astartes issue armour. 'Raptor Imperialis' - battle-honour displayed on chest palte. Transverse helmet crest or 'Centuria' is a Terran rank signifier and a hold-over from the panoply of the Luna Wolves.
