Title: The Visual Codex Project
Description: Thread for Submissions/Discussion
Mithras - January 30, 2008 05:20 AM (GMT)
This is a dedicated thread for submissions of work and discussion thereof related to the Visual Codex Project.
As a starter for discussion, fellow Death Guard enthusiasts, I'll once again volunteer to provide Mortarion and examples of the "Bare Metal" Death Guard Scheme. I've got a Captain Garro I'm working on painting, as well (Bare Metal).

Ah well, I could post it here too

Is this what we're looking for ?

Ok, here's the whole Devastator Squad, advancing in the night on a swampy planet:

I hope it is useful.

I agree. We should use this as the title photo for the Death Guard file part of our project, assuming we use Shroud's document as a template. Damned impressive!

I was going to include this in the photo tutorial - it's a good start but 1) the pic needs to be bigger to edit into such a document, and 2) the digital stuff needs to be neater.
I'm hoping to get some info posted up on bluescreening and clever digital artowkr techniques which can be used to create the kind of artwork that GW produces for codex entries (like the IG tanks etc with muzzle flashes and smoke).

Here's 1 I did a little while ago. Posted in another thread but this is his home I guess. :)

Beautiful as before, Iacton. Again, looks like a possible conversion of one of the old metals? I'm probably far off,but would love to know how you pulled this off. Wouldn't mind building a few in this style.
I'll have some better photos of my Bare Metal DG and Mortarion up shortly, I hope.

Thanks again Mithras.
No conversion work here. Just a straight forward paint job (a bit tidier than the Luna Wolf).
He is again an old school marine, 1 of 4 "Artificer" armour variants that GW did.

Most of my paint jobs are on the old RT figures, they're not as clean as the modern sculpts but they are so much more characterful. You can pick up almost any of the models and think to yourself "He should be a......."
There's plenty more when I get them finished and photographed.

I remember on the old board a discussion about the colour scheme of the Death Guard so i though i would post this image as it is how i have always imagined them.

Hey got a question? You know that army badge on the normal Space marine decals,
Would that be an easy way to do death guard decals?

I finally had some time to paint yesterday, and managed to finish up a Death Guard Scout squad with sniper rifles:

The models are just the plastic sniper scouts with Chaos Warrior heads. I trimmed the horns off, though left the stumps on the Sergeant as some sort of communications device. I scraped out the wings on the chest-plates, too, leaving a skull which serves as their Legion's symbol on these scouts, although on most of the models this area is covered by their rifles. The Sergeant got a purity seal/oath of moment over a gouge where I messed up slightly. ;)
I'm fairly pleased with how these turned out, although the white isn't as even as I'd liked.
First of all I did some block colours and first highlights:
- Scorched Brown and Dark Flesh on the brown (except the cloaks)
- Scorched Brown and Calthan Brown on the cloaks, followed by a couple of drybrushes with Bleached Bone mixed in
- Dark Angels Green and a mix with Gnarloc Green on the green
- Boltgun Metal and Mithril Silver on the metals
- Flat Dheneb Stone on the whites
This was then washed over with a 2:1 mix of Black Ink and Chestnut Ink. The black areas were then highlighted by mixing in white or bone, and pouches etc were highlighted with Dark Flesh. The armour had the Dheneb Stone reapplied, leaving the wash in the cracks, and then a couple of layers of Skull White painted over. I tried blending the Dheneb Stone with white, but settled on pure white as the mixture looked a little dirty for my tastes.

Since it sounded like a lot of people needed some good visual references for their Death Guard Space Marines, I thought I'd throw in my two-bits, and provide some visual stimulation! ;) Hope this helps inspires everyone!

Some more new artwork from the
HH Book One: Betrayal:

Death Guard Sergeant. Note: Crossed scythes on chest are a personal award granted to the sergeant from Primarch Mortarion himself.

Death Guard Legionary in Mark III 'Iron' Armour. Note: Modified 'Iron' armour with enhanced life-support systems.

Death Guard Legionary. Note: 'Iron' pattern armour utilising prototype Anvilus pattern backpack unit. This variant had enhanced stabilising thruster vents to aid in void operations, but inferior rad-shielding.

Death Guard Legionary in Mark III 'Iron' armour. Note: Corroded damage to torso plate, likely to have been caused by an Ork cutting-tool.

Death Guard Legionary in Mark II 'Crusader' Armour. Note: Enhanced breathing apparatus incorporated into reinforced helm.

Death Guard Veteran in Mark IV 'Maximus' armour with scavenged parts from various marks. Note: Imperial Aquila incised on chest by hand on breastplate to denote Loyalist during Battle of Istvaan III.
