Not a bad photo! Is this one of the old Metals? Hard to tell, but a very ferocious looking miniature:)

I image we'll want to represent the standard Ultras, as well as the Varangians. I've got minis for both that I'll try to throw into the mix here. I also have a Primarch fig that I'll be glad to contribute unless someone else prefers to handle that aspect.

He is indeed one of the old "Death Eagle" marines sculpted by Mark Copplestone

He just sort of looked the part when I was choosing what Legion/Chapter to paint him.

I don't know anything about Varangians so I'm interested to see what this entails.

The Varangii are those guys with the eagle-winged helmets ("modern" day Honour Guard).

They were also the Mercernary Bodyguard of the Byzantine Emperors. They were recruited from amongst the Celtic, Germanic and Norse peoples - all reknowned for their bravery and ferocity in battle.

From what I can see, looks very interesting. Will need a better photo though before we can judge properly though.

Hmm, the gold detail looks the same as the face... I think he could do with some washes to add shading. Did you spray/basecoat the model beforehand?

Torg - February 21, 2008 10:34 AM (GMT)
Yeah,Hmm, washes you say,too bad my game shop burnt down
otherwise I would.Any other ideas that I could add? :)

Weiss - February 21, 2008 11:14 AM (GMT)
Just take, say a brown (bestial works quite well), mix it with tons of water and you have your wash, then slop it on his face and that should bring out the shading. Then just go back over the raised areas with the flesh colour (you can hold the mini up to a light to see where light would naturally fall and use that as a guide). You can use the same principle with just about anything that has relief detail, it's all about choosing the colour.

Personally, I like to water down all the paints I use. Sometimes you have to give it a few coats but you end up with a nice smooth finish.

Hope this helps.

Torg - February 21, 2008 12:17 PM (GMT)
Indeed it does, thanks for the help,I'll try to post a new pic in a couple days!
:)

Torg - February 22, 2008 12:38 AM (GMT)
Ask BigWill,I bought it from him awhile ago,on e-bay,During the time
of the old site.I think it's a Scibor,(although, I added a few things,Like the
eagle on the chest,)it's basically the Lord Ultra commander dude. If you want
one go look in the trade section under,Roboute Guilliman for sale on e-bay!:)

I don't see why it couldn't go in once it's painted, though you'll need to provide a description of the colours used.

I can do that for you, easily. Sounds like a fun endeavor ;) Just give me some time, I've been really busy as of late.

Weiss - February 27, 2008 09:42 AM (GMT)
I don't think there is a time limit, and we're only doing basic troopers for the moment, so take as long as you like!

Alright, sounds good by me. I also have a few Pre-Herey Ultramarine standard troopers as well, that are already complete. I'll try and get pictures of those as well.

One hell of a model wow. But what about his bolter ? Dont want to make the switch between handguard and Clip so that the Bolter is looking like the early one ? ;)

Im always forgetting it too after i assemble my model and then its too late.

Iacton - October 8, 2008 11:28 AM (GMT)
Great model Apo!

I don't hold with this whole thing about the bolters, personally.
The 2nd Edition and RT bolters all looked plain daft to me and so I wouldn't use them if possible.
I have had forum members elsewhere tell me that the old bolters should be used for PH models, but I don't want to ruin a good looking model with an ugly firearm!

[/my 2p worth] ;)

i agree
the older bolters just look nasty

shorty - October 27, 2008 07:17 AM (GMT)
Ähem there is a Tutorial about customizing a new bolter for the old look...

So if you dont like the older bolters (i dont like them too) but dig the newer parts like hand guard, magazine holder...you can swap parts to make the older style model but with the new parts...i think that wont look too bad after all...

Thats right Lord_Mortirion. They are from the small painting guide booklet that was supplied with the Space Marine Paint Set. I really wish that I still had my copy to hand.

I really like Apologist's own designs of Ultramarines heraldry as well. They are superb.
