Title: The Devourers
Description: Angron's Bodyguard
ShroudFilm - January 13, 2009 12:26 AM (GMT)
For the AOTE weekend, I will be fielding Angron and his Devourers bodyguard. The only info I have so far is that they carry "gladiatorial chainaxes" and that they look like they are silhouetted in Terminator armour in the artwork.
Does anyone have any more info?
In order to get that sleek, stylised look for them, I may use Grey Knights with PH pads...

This probably goes without saying and you most likely know it, but if they are elite bodyguards, they probably have more cybernetic enhancements and wires to pump adrenaline drugs and such into their nervous systems.
Also, lots of blood. Oh baby lots of blood.
ShroudFilm - January 13, 2009 12:23 PM (GMT)
Blood... oh yes, there will be blood... :D
My Angron is going to be something halfway between the one above and these two:
So now I need to find a good basis for the minis and see how the scale matches up. I found this fella in the Warmachine range:
I think with modified shoulders and a cloak, we'll be in business!

I will see what I can find for you Shroudfilm...
Where did the snippet of information regarding 'gladiatorial chainaxes' come from out of interest?
ShroudFilm - January 13, 2009 12:44 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure - that's secondhand from the TF PH codex, mentioned in the flavour text for Primarch Honour Guard.

Mmmm...I wonder where they got it from?...Oh well, I guess that it will make the search even more of a challenge. :D
Battle Brother Loken - January 13, 2009 02:49 PM (GMT)
for the big angry one
there is one thing i remeber that always made him my third favorite primarch (night lord is number one then russ)
its that he is covered in blades and other CC weapons (they talk about it in the third horus heresy book which i cant remeber its name right now)
ShroudFilm - January 13, 2009 02:54 PM (GMT)
Aye, Galaxy in Flames where he tears those fellas a new rubble-hole. :D
Battle Brother Loken - January 13, 2009 02:59 PM (GMT)
thats the one
i love that scene
and the way everyone else just has that look on their face like "what is he doing?"
anyway yah lots of knives and the like
may i recomend the ogre knives the sprue comes with lots

That warmachine model will be perfect - is it the Butcher of Khardov (or something along those lines...). The Khador range has some great chunky body armour style models. Only problem I can see is that he might not be tall enough for a primarch...
Inquisitor Malaclypse - January 13, 2009 03:45 PM (GMT)
that model is not a bad basis, but looks a bit paunchy, IMHO, to be a Primarch.
as for gradiatorial chain axes, perhaps FW Khornate axes, but converted so they have to sets of chain blades?
just a thought.
ShroudFilm - January 13, 2009 09:34 PM (GMT)
I'm aiming for something like this too... just found is online:
The Butcher is 35mm tall... a Grey Knight Terminator is 37mm tall... so if I can boost him by 5mm, we're in business! :D
I thought of routing the neck and giving him the bare head from the Chaos Termie Lord, which might add a couple of mm. Also, obviously making his boot soles thicker, and stand him on a slightly raised base?
Lord_Mortirion - January 14, 2009 05:00 PM (GMT)
tales of the heresy, is that the short story thingy???
ShroudFilm - January 15, 2009 02:03 AM (GMT)
Aye, due out April... look at that, we beat them to the anthology release date!
Apologist - January 15, 2009 10:35 AM (GMT)
That's a nice basis for Angron – but I think he might still be a little short. I'd recommend cutting him in half at the waist, and attaching some Grey Knight legs (perhaps Captain Stern?). That'd tie him in nicely with the Devourers.
You might also consider the Chaos Knight shoulderpads. They'd look great on any Primarch, but especially on ol 'Ron.
I'd definitely leave the head as is – the less identifiable the head, the more individual and unique the conversion.
Axe-wise, have you considered the Space Hulk Librarian? They're pretty cheap on ebay (mainly because the model's pretty rubbish!)
For a completely different approach, you might consider the Mordheim Pit Fighter figures. The Ogre is a great size for a Primarch:http://farm1.static.flickr.com/167/4810552...7b2e385.jpg?v=0
...and there are some fantastic design ideas on the main group.
ShroudFilm - January 15, 2009 12:12 PM (GMT)
I've been doing some comparison of scales and sizes, and I've made a few notes.
I converted Titus Pullo's Fulgrim, which I think is spot-on, scale-wise, for a Primarch:
These are the sole-to-top-of-head measurements for all these minis:
The Butcher 35mm
Grey Knight Terminator 36mm
So my idea is to boost Angron by 5mm to make him a "towering beast" at 40mm! ;) I had considered these ideas:
1) Add a 1mm layer of plasticard to the soles of his feet to raise him up subtly.
2) Add 2mm depth to the base scenics to give him an elevated stance position.
3) Rout the neck and use the CTL head, adding approx 2mm to the neck.
4) Give him the Darth Vader treatment, by cutting him off at the knees and using longer shins and feet from another similar mini.
For the Devourers, I want to use the GKT box set, and use the two halberd guys and the sergeant. I will replace the halberd heads with chainaxe blades and add dreadnought shins or half-barrels to the shoulders.
Colour scheme-wise, I want to go with black, red and gold for Angron (as per the Tales of Heresy
cover) and red and gold for the Devourers, marking a connection with M41 Khorne Berserkers.
Since today is a slow day for work, I might do a Photoshop mockup of the conversion ideas...
ShroudFilm - January 15, 2009 09:53 PM (GMT)
Here is a quick PS of the look I want for them, but I haven't decided on colours yet...
Apologist - January 16, 2009 03:04 PM (GMT)
I like it a lot! Tweaks that I'd suggest would be to remove the wrist-mounted stormbolter and replace with a hand-held combi-bolter. It's a very distinctive Grey Knight emblem, and looks a little too slick for Pre-Heresy cataphracts/terminators.
I'd also rub in some putty to the ingrained text areas, just to get a nice smooth surface and further disguise their origin. Otherwise, I think they're pretty much spot on!
Colour-wise, I'd suggest sticking with white and blue, perhaps distinguishing them with one red arm, or a red helmet or somesuch. It'd prefigure their turn to Khorne, and also make a nice visual flash.
The forehead is crying out for a freehand World Eater symbol, too!
ShroudFilm - January 16, 2009 07:29 PM (GMT)
Oh, I quite liked the script - I wanted to try to show them as being the "elite of the elite" within the legion, having TDA which was almost Artificer quality but not really appreciating is because they just got it all bashed up and covered in blood...
I may do away with those arms altogether and use plastics - does anyone know what the joints are like between body and arm? Might bare muscular arms look good, for a minimalist approach?
I seem to remember someone using these Bane Thrall shoulders for their regular WE Terminators... what you think?
Benedict Arnold - January 16, 2009 09:27 PM (GMT)
It looks like they have one smooth and one spiked shoulder in the image. Perhaps use a combo of the two pads? You could combine it with thicker armo(u)r on the spiked side perhaps to suggest that being the "front" presented in close combat. Maybe have Ves or one of the other posters with a knowledge of Roman Gladitorial combat and armo(u)r point you in the direction of some reference materials. I'd say leave the armo(u)red arms, as Angron sports armo(u)r on both of his. Colo(u)r scheme is difficult as well, since Angron seemingly doesn't sport the colo(u)rs of the Worldeaters legion and was an early convert to Khorne's favo(u)rite red and bronze, apparently even prior to his fall. If you used the red and bronze, you'd be able to dual purpose them as both pre-fall and up to the Siege of Terra perhaps.

The shoulders look the same; it's just his right shoulder is partially covered by whatever's in his hand.

The terminator silhouette in the background, not Angron. ;)

Though the pad doesn't look as spikey as the alternate Shroud presented, it definately seems to have some type of studs/spikes on it.
ShroudFilm - January 19, 2009 01:00 AM (GMT)
These are from Ithmaril's WE army, the trhead for which I just accidentally (and shamefully!) necro-ed.
I quite like the Bane Thrall shoulders but they do look a little... sparse? It'd be tricky to balance them with a non-spiked version on the opposite side, but not impossible.
I think maybe it would be better to add studs to barrel/dreadshin shoulders to get the spiky cataphractii look. What say you all?
I'm working on a new Captain for my WE army for AOTE, so I could try out some of these ideas by making him a Termie.

So I know this is an old thread but is there a chance you can give me info on these devourers such as statline, equipment and special rules.
