Title: Too much boltgun!

Whitehorn - January 4, 2009 11:57 PM (GMT)
I'm trying a couple of test paint schemes on Word Bearers.

I've done a dark green undercoat with a boltgun brushing. Aiming to highlight with mithril, but all that silver is clashing with the guns. Any ideas?

It's lacking squad/chapter markings and I figure I could do the gun casing in black.

I may try mixing boltgun 1:1 with Adeptus for the brushing instead.

Red faces ala Crimson Mask chapter.

So, I went with the half grey mix and dulled the silver on the armour, did a few mithril hightlights:

Nice! I confess I'd never thought of doing silver WBs before. I have some very simple, unfinished ones. I used an Adeptus Battlegrey base (over white undercoat), highlighted it with Fortress, then washed the whole lot Badab black. I could then use red for the bolter casings. Some occasional gold trim also helped the break up the effect. Excuse the bad photography - my old camera wasn't that great with it, and nor was I, but you get the idea:

The bases need finishing, as do the bolter casings, and a few more highlights wouldn't hurt, but like I said, you get the idea. I like the look of yours too, I simply took "stone grey" to be a flatter colour. That said, if I were you I'd colour your bolter casings something other than silver or black in order to provide a splash of colour/contrast.

Just my two cents! Nice work! :)

I've come across the Word Bearers colours being described as Granite Grey, and Steel Grey.

Steel Grey comes from False Gods, page 111. Their Rhino's are also described as being Dark, Brushed Steel vehicles on page 43.

Before the novels, I'd referenced the Index Astartes article and used a mix of Boltgun Metal and Chaos Black as the base colour.
But it has been pointed out to me that there is Charadon Granite in the Foundation Paints range, and this might make a good base colour for the Word Bearers. Though I might still use a metallic as part of the highlight.

Interesting! I should re-read False Gods, perhaps...although I just enjoy Horus Rising more, it's the only HH book I've read twice. :)

That said, I like Charadon Granite a lot, but I think I would cut it with another colour if I was to use it as a base colour. Probably Codex Grey, or maybe even a bit of Fortress, in order to add some grey without it going muddy.

Sounds like an excuse to do a test model! I have an Absyrtus (chaplain) model and a captain one, that are both primed but as yet unpainted. Unfortunately, they're both in transit (slowly, by sea) to Australia...so it'll be a couple of months at least until we see results...*sigh*

Gagoc, I don't suppose you have posted pics of your WBs anywhere? I'd love to take a look!

I think the next test model I'll run using a 1:1 mix of boltgun and granite as the base colour work through selective highlights/weathering into Mithril. I'm keeping with the silver theme but not wholesome.

On a related note, my Charadon Granite is a dull brown rather than being particularly grey, so I think grey highlights and some shading would be necessary. Not sure whether my pot's a little off, or this was the intended shade, but I don't think Charadon Granite would do by itself.

Indeed! I mean the base drybrush colour. My chaps have a dark green underlining (look closely).

I'd rather work from a colour outside the box (green/brown) than take grey and highlight it grey :)

They're in the Visual Codex thread.
There's only three models, but there are more pics of them on my photobucket page.
