Title: Raven Guard Markings (esp. Sergeant and Veteran)

Legion XX - October 30, 2008 06:28 PM (GMT)
I'm about to start working on my long in the planning Raven Guard force and need a little help...

WHAT is now considered canon in terms of Raven Guard markings?

I'd like to think that I can use the old Index Astartes article as a baseline, but has anything come out since then to contradict it?

What I've got so far is:

Sergeants - White Helmets
Veterans - White Helmets and White Shoulder Pads and Arms
Veteran Sergeants - Not sure! Would it be the same as "Veterans" above, but with some differentiating markings on the helmet? Laurels? A red stripe? A red helmet with a white stripe?

Company Number on left knee pad

Squad determined by shoulder pad rim color:

Red = Assault
Yellow = Devastator
Green = Tactical

Most of my confusion stems from the fact that after the publication of the Raven Guard Index Astartes article, GW itself doesn't seem to know how to 'correctly' paint Raven Guard markings...

And to tie this all into the Great Crusade, I eventually plan on having:

1) A 10 man squad of Pre-Heresy Terminators (based off of the AoBR Terminator Sergeant legs, which are already tabbarded up nicely for me!)

2) A 9 man Jetbike Squad (go Wookie Hole conversion kit!) with a 'Jetbike Attack Bike' conversion in there as well.

3) A Pre-Heresy style Dreadnought

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

I remember seeing somewhere (possibly that Index Astartes article) that pre-Heresy the squad type wasn't determined by pad trim, but pad colour... I think the pads were half-and-half black and the colours you mention below, with different patterns for different squad types. So Tactical were green and black bisected.

You are correct, and the aforementioned Index Astartes article does state this rather clearly.

Which means that I should have been more clear in that I was looking for Post-Heresy advice, because as of right now, the only Pre-Heresy elements to my Raven Guard force will be a Terminator Squad, a "Jetbike" squad and a Dreadnought, so I'm not too worried about Pre-Heresy color schemes.

I've no idea if a Post-Heresy Raven Guard Sergeant should have a RED helmet, or a WHITE helmet.

And a Veteran Sergeant, a RED helmet with a WHITE stripe, along with the WHITE shoulder pads and arms?

Anyone?

White helmets.

OK, just as I thought.

A veteran has a white helmet.

And a veteran sergeant has a white helmet and white shoulder pads and arms.

A 'regular' sergeant has a ???? helmet?

Is there no difference between a sergeant and a veteran, in terms of markings, for the Raven Guard?

Anyone?

OK, unless someone can convince me otherwise, I'd go with the following color scheme:

SERGEANT = White Helmet
VETERAN SERGEANT and higher in rank = White helmet, shoulder pads and arms

So, NO 'codex' red helmets for sergeants at all, it would appear...

I thought I'd post to show I've read the topic again: as far as I know your thoughts are correct. I've never explicitly seen it written but the models seem to indicate that veterans get the white arm bits too, as you have posted.
