Title: My Modelling Crusade
Maratheus - January 25, 2008 11:38 AM (GMT)
*Only the coolest kids of the block check the last page for updates ;)*
I had posted my WIP Death Guard on the old boards and will now continue the stuff here.
I've started sculpting the armors on the guys as can be seen below
I don't really know how I should gear this guy up so I need your help here
Or just a powerweapon and a stormshield?
IF you'd like to see the stuff I posted on the old forum go here
C&c most welcome and appreciated.
Weiss - January 25, 2008 12:10 PM (GMT)
Looking good man, I like the autocannon personally...
Drew - January 25, 2008 01:23 PM (GMT)
They look really good. For the last guy I'd definitely go with the autocannon.
Fortronus - January 25, 2008 07:10 PM (GMT)
They're starting to come together well. Keep it up :)
Ithmaril - January 25, 2008 08:51 PM (GMT)
They look great, perfectly deathguard-ish. Concerning that Marine, I'd definitly vote for the Autocannon. The Rocket Launcher looks *'meh', and the close combat configuration doesn't fit my picture of the Death Guard too well. But the mace is very very cool... keep it for another model.
Vredesbyrd - January 25, 2008 09:15 PM (GMT)
I like the combat guy personally, maybe with a different weapon though rather than the spiked mace. The pose for me is more one of someone commanding his men forward, as opposed to someone armed with a heavy weapon.
Nice use of Dreadnought toes there for feet.
Fortronus - January 25, 2008 09:25 PM (GMT)
I like the CC guy i think the mace work's well for them. like the censer bearer's from WHF.
Falkus Kibre - January 25, 2008 09:34 PM (GMT)
Brother-Captain Basilus - January 26, 2008 12:31 AM (GMT)
I did this very same thing with one of my sergeants
Keep us updated, they look cool :)
Oh, and my suggestion is: Autocannon ;)
Maratheus - January 26, 2008 11:38 AM (GMT)
I will be giving the guy an autocannon then, the mace and shield will be saved for a commander.
I won't be able to show my progress for some time because I returned the camera I had borrowed :)
rohanboi - January 26, 2008 11:40 AM (GMT)
abit late but AUTO CANNON :)
Maratheus - March 16, 2008 07:37 PM (GMT)
Woo, update time!
I've made a bit of progress with this true scale stuff, first of all this is how my workstation currently looks like
Okay first we have an apothecary I've been working on and is slowly nearing completion. All it needs is a few bits and bobs here and there, a cape and a backpack.
I've also been reading The flight of eisenstein and got a bit inspired to make a character from the book. Guess who this is :P
Still have a lot to do on him, sculpt the chest eagle etc.
And here we have a fresh(?) Plague marine
(I hope this is suitable to be posted here)
Lastly a groupshot to show the size of these guys
I hope you like them.
C&C is always welcome.
Angron - March 16, 2008 07:49 PM (GMT)
Nice Garro mate ;)
Lovely big#¤%" DGs mate.
beef - March 16, 2008 10:03 PM (GMT)
very nice, They look a bit tubby but I guess thats fine
Maratheus - March 17, 2008 06:14 AM (GMT)
Beef, I've always preferred the bulkier look on my marines :)
I forgot to post a WIP of the Typhon I've also been working on so I'll try to post it later today.
Iacton - March 17, 2008 11:57 AM (GMT)
Ye gods! They are BIG!!
Never seen this thread before Maratheus, sorry! Lots of well conceived ideas, and the thought of the Death Guard being a bit "portly" fits well considering how they end up anyway.
Mr Garro's chin? What is happening there? I don't recognise the head I am afraid.
I see no paint on your workstation though  , will we be seeing some finished work soon? I certainly hope so :D
Maratheus - March 17, 2008 12:33 PM (GMT)
Garros chin? I think theres some kind of collar/reinforcement with a cogwheel shape. I think it's there so he could bite the foul xenos harder.
The head is originally from the Battle of Macragge doctor guy. I just chopped it off mercilessly.
Oh and you sir are correct about the lack of paints in here. This is kind of a moving working station as I live in three places :) That pic is taken from my studying apartment. I do have paints though.
Don't get your hopes up of finished stuff just yet, I'm a very slow modeller :D
By the way, heres Typhon in his unfinished glory.
Angron - March 17, 2008 12:37 PM (GMT)
Unholy poop on a stick, I love that Typhon! Hes so big :P
Iacton - March 17, 2008 12:43 PM (GMT)
I agree (well maybe not about putting poo on a stick  ), he is quite the most imposing "marine" model I think I have seen.
Please finish making him in your chopping up and making house and take him and the others to your painting house!
What happens in the 3rd house? Do you dream up your unholy schemes there?
Weiss - March 17, 2008 12:55 PM (GMT)
You have no problem sticking a baboon on a stick... :D
I love Typhus there. Are those the inquisitor shoulder pads from Tyrus? The double power fists look great, very nice and chunky...
Iacton - March 17, 2008 01:01 PM (GMT)
|QUOTE (Weiss @ Mar 17 2008, 12:55 PM)|
| You have no problem sticking a baboon on a stick... :D |
I believe it's a Mandrill... Oh crap that's even worse
Maratheus - March 17, 2008 01:07 PM (GMT)
Thanks again
Iacton, now that I think of it, I do plot my unholy schemes in the third house because I don't model there.
Weiss, indeed they are the Tyrus shoulder pads a bit chopped up.
Vredesbyrd - March 17, 2008 03:08 PM (GMT)
Wow. Typhon looks amazing! Are you planning on painting him in the darker grey scheme he's shown in the Collected Visions or in the standard Death Guard colours?
I really like these chunkier looking Death Guard - it shows their stoic nature.
Maratheus - March 17, 2008 04:25 PM (GMT)
I've been thinking of giving him the standard colours but with a bit more wear and tear.
We shall see once I get it ready for painting. All suggestions are most welcome though.*EDIT*
Here's some more progress I've made.
A marine in a Thunder armor variant.
It still needs a bit of greenstuff work and then it's off to be primed.
Here's a scout mockout I've done, and a regular marine for scale. I couldn't find the scouts other hand so the pose isn't that interesting. The general idea for this was that he's sneaking somewhere behind the lines.
Still need a lot of work on him.
C&C always welcome.
Maratheus - March 18, 2008 02:36 PM (GMT)
A small update, I worked on the thunder armor guys arms a bit and finished the helmet. Thanks to Tiriel for his insight.
Vredesbyrd - March 18, 2008 02:49 PM (GMT)
Awesome just awesome. Finally a guy in Thunder Armour who looks the business. I spy old Chaos Warrior arms in there, but I can't quite see where his heads from. Is it a Cadian with an added topknot or something else entirely?
Maratheus - March 18, 2008 02:55 PM (GMT)
Old chaos warrior arms yes, cadian head no. It's from the plastic marauders. I chopped off the horns and stuff on it.
Maratheus - March 20, 2008 02:28 PM (GMT)
There won't be any updates for this little blog in a while because I have to return the camera to my friend and I'm going to be in practical training for about two months.
Well here we go, I'm going to do some other legions in addition to these Death Guard.
This guy will be the Emperors children apotechary Fabius.
A lot of stuff to do on him, but I think you can see the general pose and idea. And here's the loverly gleaming purple that will adorn his armor once he's finished.
Vredesbyrd - March 20, 2008 08:51 PM (GMT)
I really like your Fabius though once again your choice of heads has me stumped as to where its from, as an ex-GW Staffer I'm ashamed of myself.
I think that metallic purple, whilst a cool colour, doesn't really work for EC, but I'll reserve any true judgement until I see it on Fabius. It does remind me of grape soda though...I want grape soda now dammit!
Maratheus - March 20, 2008 09:22 PM (GMT)
The head is from the new Chaos terminator lord. I shaved the eye symbol from the mask and scraped all the wire and stuff from his head.
The color choice was just a little idea I had of making the marine armor in metallic colors. After all the Emperors children were described as wearing gleaming purple.
Well... Grape soda you say?
Maratheus - June 2, 2008 07:40 PM (GMT)
Okay here's what I've got, first off a Vostroyan test scheme
My pride and joy, the autocannon guy
All I've done to Typhon is some of the leg armor
Here's Garro almost finished and ready for primer
And lastly a finished plaguemarine and the mkI guy. He's kinda turning into a mini Mortarion of sorts.
That's all for now, any comments and critics are much appreciated.
Kaleb 'Angelus' Dante - June 2, 2008 08:23 PM (GMT)
They are looking good so far. The mini Mortarion guy could be one of the Death Shroud, Mortarions personal bodyguards
Vredesbyrd - June 2, 2008 08:26 PM (GMT)
Hurrah! Tis the return of Jimmy Dreadnought Toes! That pose he's rocking just oozes attitude, plus he looks like he'd rather get up close and personal with the pistol rather than fighting from afar with the cannon...
Loving the OSL on the Vostroyan miniature, are you planning on doing that on all your guys? Will the Marines be getting OSLd too?
Typhon is looking good, I really like the banding on his legs. Where are his shoulder pads from? They're the bees knees they are.
Your Garro looks amazing. Definately gotten some ideas for mine there.
Hehe mini Mort.
Maratheus - June 2, 2008 08:36 PM (GMT)
Thanks you two.
Kaleb, good idea there, but weren't the Deathshroud always in terminator armour and masked? I do plan on doing the Deathshroud and maybe Mortarion even but that's a long way from here.
Vred, the OSL will be done on most of the Vostroyans I have but I'm not sure about marines yet. We shall see once I get better at it, I kinda want the marines to look spot on.
Shoulderpads are from Inquisitor range Tyrus.
Iacton - June 2, 2008 11:15 PM (GMT)
Updates are great! As already said the OSL is v. nice indeed, love the pose on the autocannon guy, Garro is sexay and Typhon is coming along very nicely!
Mini Mort looks good except for the scythe for me. If you can find another blade of some sort, I think it may be better - it just looks a bit like a crocodile head up there for some strange reason.
More painty goodness please ;)
Maratheus - June 3, 2008 07:45 AM (GMT)
A crocodile head? I dunno about swapping it right now, the idea of a chainscythe has kinda grown on me. I'll try to tweak it a bit to look less like a croc though.
Oh and painty goodness is on it's way as I'm finishing these guys up. I'd just like to give the paintjob some more justice by taking better pictures as the flash isn't the best solution.
Maratheus - June 25, 2008 04:16 PM (GMT)
Here's an update, the revered Garro now almost finished, last things to do is a little paint here and there and making the base.
Tried a little freehand here.
I'll be getting more pics of wip marines and Vostroyans as soon as possible.
C&C most appreciated.
Iacton - June 26, 2008 08:47 AM (GMT)
Garro is looking really good Maratheus.
I assume that the dark patches are battle damage? If so, I would suggest that you harden the edges with very thin lines of light grey or similar. I love the skin tone, the eyes will set him off brilliantly.
The conversion is almost unnoticeable now, too
Maratheus - June 26, 2008 08:58 AM (GMT)
Do you mean that I should add grey to the white near the damaged parts or something similar? This was actually the first time I use this technique so the results are a bit meh. He also looks a bit rough in places as I almost ruined the whole model with a bad coat of spray
Here's a bit of an update.
and Mr. Mantank
Weiss - June 26, 2008 09:22 AM (GMT)
He looks damn nice. The skin is great, as Iacton said, and I like the dirty white.
The backpack is cool, though I'm not too sure about the combat knife...
I'm liking Decius a lot, and the mantank is simply phat, though the arms seem a bit high (they look like they're blu-tacked on though, so maybe that's affecting it...)
