Title: Word Bearers, Emperors Children...
Description: New army, from scratch *gutted*

Lord_Mortirion - October 6, 2008 08:16 PM (GMT)
Due to recient events, i have nothing to show for 17 yrs of colletcing...
so i will be starting a whole new force, which is a good thing as my sculpting and painting has improved, and my old army was looking a bit bad... (it was bloody awfull)

My word bearers will be based on the picture of john blanches renegade marines in 2nd ed chaos codex, and a picture from an old white dwarf of someones tourny army (the issue that had the 'Dark Harlequin' army from 2000 - 2001 i think, if anyone has that issue let me know please)...

I will be using Standard CSM bits mixed in with BT & DA bits for the robes... Im going for a 'monkish' kinda vibe, as the WB's seem to me to be the most 'religious  ??!?!' of the traitor legions, most of them will also have parchments adorning their armour, and many banners on their packs (all with text, no pretty pikkies) though these will be for decoration and have no affect on the game...

Also due to the daemon codex takin the glory, and the humble CSM's have to use generic stuff, i will work on some random Daemon models bearing no alegance to a known god (basically so no one can whinge for mixing different lokin models in the same squad, in my local store i had a game and mixed plague bearers and bloodletters. and some kid whinged for me doing it, even though it has no effect on game terms)

I will be using the colour scheme they use now, as i posted on here a while ago asking about the colour, and someone said that the elements in contact with the imperium wore grey, but the rest probably would have changed long before. But i will still keep the armour pre-heresy as much as i can...

For my Emperors Children, i will be basing them around the events in 'Fulgrim'... Basically standard chapter colour, but the few Noise Marines will be covered in random colours, (also because it will be a laugh painting them)...

if anyone has any ideas, feel free to share, especially on the generic daemons...

If i get time, ill write up rough armylists later, as i want to plan out before i spend any money, due to being poor n stuff

sounds interesting keep us posted...

(the issue that had the 'Dark Harlequin' army from 2000 - 2001 i think, if anyone has that issue let me know please)...

if you can tell me whats on the cover i could probably find it ;)

WD#259 i'll have a dig through the stack later and see if i can dig that one out for you mate.

is the 2nd edition codex the thick yellow one with abbadon picture on the cover or the thin one with the close up chaos marine face on it?

i always get confused which is 2nd edition

shorty - October 8, 2008 09:04 AM (GMT)
Yes 2nd one that thick one in yellow color, 3rd one with the face closeup...the building tips for Chaos marines in there are really good.

Keep on topic -comment removed.-VESPASIAN

Lord_Mortirion - October 8, 2008 02:03 PM (GMT)
just a shame i cant get the ladies fighting over me like this!!!

lol... yea sorry about the double post, im computer retarded... technoligy and all that whippersnapper stuff!!!

i got me a job now so when i get me hard earned cash ill be picking up the first bits for this, so ill keep ya informed, and i should have the army list finished later, i just been really busy doing real life stuff and tryna write a bloody short story for that comp, god its sooo easy to go over 1000 words!!!

and yes the codex in question is the one with abadon on the cover, the only decient chaos dex they have ever done in my oppinion... ascually, the only decent codex for any army...

VESPASIAN - October 8, 2008 02:54 PM (GMT)
No problem. :)

I must say that I am looking forward to seeing your Word Bearers, especially as they are going to represent the faction that continued to feign its loyalty on Terra.

Battle for the Abyss (Page 12) has a great explanation of why the Word Bearers not on Terra, destroyed their grey armour. The granite grey armour represented:

'...obedience and capitulation, the trappings of compromise and denial.'

These suits were destroyed in Olympus Mons on Mars; and the new crimson armour then adopted, represented the Word Bearers new loyalty to the truth of the Word.

I must agree with you Lord_Mortarion, I think the 2nd edition Chaos Codex was the best, its certainly one of my favourites: though the new Space Marine Codex does come very close to being as good.

I'm currently compiling the new background on the Word Bearers from the Battle of the Abyss. Some of which may be of use to you-the first part is in the Word Bearers Section of the forum: link

If you have any questions about aspects not covered thus far in the article, then just let me know and I'll do my best to help.

ShroudFilm - October 8, 2008 11:00 PM (GMT)
 The number of times I've posted, then found the answer to my own question...

In this case, an edit might have been more desirable, but I think in future we can safely look the other way when a member double-posts on his own blog (within reason!)

Please though guys, in all good humour, don't jibe mods unnecessarily or question mod actions publically - they are all more than happy to discuss things privately if you have an issue, and I am happy to act as impartial go-between in any other situation.

Still, definitely looking forward to seeing the progress of this blog! :)

Lord_Mortirion - October 8, 2008 11:49 PM (GMT)
aaaaaaaaaaaa im really torn between red or grey *crys*

was messing around with ink's in the store before... damn them!!!!!

i was gonna double post just to be a git, but i thought... nahhhhh

i cant believe that i didnt check the wordbearers section... i feel so retarded now...

because i cant make my mind up... what colour shall i do them, come on peeps... its voting time lol!!!

Benedict Arnold - October 9, 2008 12:25 AM (GMT)
Grey. Red is too close to post heresy. Grey, on the other hand, is solely pre-heresy.

Lord_Mortirion - October 9, 2008 12:38 AM (GMT)
but in the artbook, there is wb's in current colour... but then again, ''artistic licence''... since when was a darkangel described as a 'blood angel phlanx'

i suppose i could paint them grey, but mix some weird daemonic faces and stuff in to the armour in red, like how john blanche does on his stuff...

Benedict Arnold - October 9, 2008 12:58 AM (GMT)
Well, technically they switched prior to the outbreak of the Heresy, but to me you might as well do modern Word Bearers then. The grey marks them as distinctly unique and preheresy.

Maratheus - October 9, 2008 06:17 AM (GMT)
Grey would be good in defining the timeline but it is a rather dull colour now is it?
How about trying to give it that extra oomph. (I have no idea how )

Lonewolf - October 9, 2008 06:48 AM (GMT)
i'd say grey myself even if i is for ease of painting
you could get a really easy paint job with some of the new foundation greys and a badab black wash ;)

Lots of books/scrolls/religious elements from the Empire WFB line along with some Dark ANgels items perhaps?

Lonewolf - October 9, 2008 06:57 AM (GMT)
some of the bits from the warhammaer flagellants would work too

VESPASIAN - October 9, 2008 08:02 AM (GMT)
The burgundy colour scheme adopted by the Word Bearers is also Pre-Heresy. It just depends on which point you wish to set your army in.

Galaxy in Flames describes Erebus as wearing armour:

QUOTE (Galaxy in Flames Page 82)
...recently painted in the deep scarlet colours now adopted by the Word Bearers Legion.

So it would seem that the entire Legion adopted this colour, rather than just a part of it.

We know that the Word Bearers Legion had been split into two commands: the first under the command of Lorgar, was fighting the Ultramarines at Calth in Ultramar. The second command, under Sor Talgron, was based on Terra continuing to feign its loyalty to the Emperor; as the Word Bearers treachery was completely unknown there. (Horus Heresy: Collected Visions, Page 227)

The new crimson armour came:

QUOTE (Battle for the Abyss Page 12)
...fresh from the forges of Mars and etched with the epistles of Lorgar

So it would make sense that the Word Bearers command on Terra, would have also received the same burgundy armour as a private expression of their loyalty to the true covert cause (especially as Galaxy in Flames tells us that the colour was adopted by the entire Legion).

From reading Battle for the Abyss, we know the true reasons for the colour change but those outside the Legion on Terra would have been given some other excuse for it.

I think the real difference with the Word Bearers of the 31st Millenium, is that the Legion in reality, is actually a collective of several smaller Chapters. Each has its own iconography, attributes, fighting style and role in the Word and the Greater Word Bearers Legion. This new and exciting aspect gives a very distinctive feel to the Pre-Heresy Word Bearers (whatever their armour colour) and could be used to make some miniatures which have a very strong Pre-Heresy feel to them.

Lord_Mortirion - October 9, 2008 10:49 AM (GMT)
 im gonna have to think long and hard about this one aint i!!!

Whadda ya think???

The Terminators will be sculpted by me (with the aid of GW arms and heads, i aint that good lol... and some plastic tube), I tried earlier this year, I think there is a picture on here somewhere, Ill look for it later...

As posted elsewhere, the daemons will be generic 'gribblies' im trying to shy away from any 'cult' & 'power' specific (is that right  ) models...

All champions use the Rank/Name of Apostle, just because i thought it sounded better than champion dave... i thought Apostle Dave sounded more religous'y, as befits the word bearers.
Also, I have been thinking about a command vehicle for the Dark Apostle, something that resembles a blasphemous altar or suchlike... possably a huge tracked 'thing' covered in slaves/sacrafices, loyalist marines that have been carved open, their entrials used for reading the future (sorry if i went a bit graphic there, but lets be honist. this is a chaos chapter afterall) and class it as a landraider in game terms??? <_<

AND I have been thinking about some small themed terrain pieces - non combatitant models that you see in the artwork (people with hoods and big books etc)...

Lord_Mortirion - October 9, 2008 05:45 PM (GMT)
just wondering if anyone could pm me pikkies from a certain article by a mr blanche in a certain monthly publication... words would be cool as well, thanx...

sorry about the double post, and im sketching some idead as well that i will try and get on

Gagoc TheAncient - October 9, 2008 07:05 PM (GMT)
If you're planning on doing your Word Bearers in Granite colour I have some advice I picked up.

I got this from a guy at GD, cos I'd been asking everybody I could, on what colour Granite is.

He said that Granite is Grey with a touch of Green to it, and if you wanted to paint a model this colour you'd best start with the Foundation colour Charadon Granite.

Any help?

Lord_Mortirion - October 9, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
yea, i think ill paint a few test models, as im still not used to the foundation paints - inks...

and ill see what one i had more fun painting, if i enjoy it, more chance of getting the army finished... B)

Gagoc TheAncient - October 9, 2008 10:59 PM (GMT)
Well with the ones I painted before the books described as being Granite, I used a mixture of Gunmetal and Chaos Black (The ones in the IA article looked like dark Iron to me!).
I inked with black and highlighted them with Gunmetal.

All units will have Icon represented by a large banner, there will be smaller ones given to individual squad members but these will only be for show...

Apostles weapons will probably be small handheld banner thingys, but i will let opponent know before game what the represent...

The legion symbol represents the transitional period, incorperating the original icon as a reminder to the loyal that even the most devout followers of the emperor have found new 'worthy' masters, and makes it blaintantly obvious who those masters are...

Iron Corsair - October 12, 2008 12:07 PM (GMT)
That's a pretty cool set of sketches. I must say your army looks pretty cool just from the army list. I actually have a friend of mine on another forum who absolutely loves anything to do with the Word Bearers. I hope you can get this job done, as I would like to see the finished product. Thanks for taking your time to share this with us.

Magos Explorator - October 12, 2008 02:10 PM (GMT)
This will be after they've turned to Chaos, then?

Lord_Mortirion - October 14, 2008 01:15 PM (GMT)
Just worked out how many models i need etc...

Forgeworld Red Scorpions
Black Templars upgrade sprue
Dark Angel vets
chaos mutations sprue
Chaplain Asmodai
X2 spawn
Renegade Melitia (for the standard and champions head)
Renegade Melitia Assault Weapons
Tactical Squad
Chaos marine squad
Khorne bezerkers box
posessed boxset

The Raptors will be made from leftoverbits from the boxes, terminators will be scratched/kitbashed

i have a few ideas for a Huge Terminator lord, still no idea what im going to do for me sorcerer... i have been having a go at paint schemes on some of my friends spares, when he takes pictures of them ill post them up, let me know what you think of the colours...

Where can i find the pictures of the Word Bearers artwork in collected visions, i just cant aford that much to spend on a book full of pikkies...

Anodyr - October 14, 2008 07:15 PM (GMT)
Google images for HHCCG cards.

And the Collected Visions is probably the best value book Black library ever produced - 30 for an immense high quality artbook is well worth every penny.

Lord_Mortirion - October 23, 2008 12:25 PM (GMT)

just got a copy of the Black Templars codex...

hmmmmm i like the idea of scouts in the squads, if i use this codex i could use converted guardsmen inplace of the scouts, class them as cultists or something like that...

But then i dont get to use a sexy horde of daemons... :(

now im confused... any ideas... ?????????

GREY!!!!!!!!!! In gonna do em grey...

Lord_Mortirion - January 26, 2009 04:27 PM (GMT)

found my girlfriends camera, the pictures might be a bit fuzzy, but i dont know how to use it :(

i still havnt got around to getting paint, got to decorate a flat and other real life things eating up my money, but so far this is what i have done, roughly totaling 930 points, so at least i gan get a few games in soon... i will try and download the user manual for the camera, so i can have better pix up in a day or so :D user posted image

other than that, great stuff lord M and by the sounds of things you will have an update for us tonight!?! :D

Whitehorn - January 28, 2009 11:48 PM (GMT)
Nice job on the helmets - if you hadn't noticed, I have a thing for making mine that way :)

If it's any help at all, I tried a couple of Word Bearer schemes.

A dark green base coat was used to ingrain an underlying and archaic feel to the grey. Drybrush with a mix of boltgun and grey (granite) and then highlight with boltgun and adeptus - pick out fine details in mithril - to get this. If it's too silver, just put more grey into the mixes.

I was thinking Books, Burning torch thingies and some severed heads to make em look a little less 'Upholding the Emperors will' and a bit more 'Did you call my pint a puff??? why dont you watch where im walking???'
